Mustache-friendly existing APPS or APP DEV BO
« on: May 01, 2014, 06:23:26 AM »
Hopefully the acronym-laced title didn't scare anyone off.  Well, now that you're here - please let me know what Applications you find to be of a Mustachian bent.  I see alot of posts around these forums that could seriously benefit from user friendly apps (both gross and granular).  Perhaps they exist already, perhaps not.  Naturally free is best, but a few dollars for a spectacular app could be gold.

In general, for the Mustachian community - and the population at large, a large problem when comparing to others is that we're often showing each other slightly different numbers that are in different formats with different references etc.  Having a standard app (and being able to specify a particular standard output) would go along way to analyzing and comparing usage/spending of whatever area you want.

Another feature of interest would be apps that send data to a open or closed group within a cloud environment with the purpose of populating a 'challenge'.

A couple areas that I see opportunities (if a product doesn't already exist); based on interest in the forums to kick it off:

1) Tracking spending of groceries - this would require a fast and dirty OCR app to scan your receipt and quickly be able to send items to categories, keep running totals of spending, be able to upload a snapshot of a specific time period etc.

2) Electricity - a simple app with fields that you input certain key numbers that allows different calculations to be made.

3) Bike/Run etc challenges - We have a pretty clumsy sheet in the gauntlet area that takes alot of upkeep etc.  An app where you input your distances etc for the day and the data populates a closed group cloud environment.

4) Savings rates, spending rates, net worth, etc - again, could be as 3) above.

Since I've no coding/app development experience at all - I'll let those that do chime in.  I have no idea what it would cost/time required for someone/s to (using one of the above as an example) develop...but I would think there would a good side gig in it...

Of course, if anyone has suggestions for any kind of Mustachian-app, I can populate in the message below this one a list of useful applications.

I just released the personal finance planning app I showed off a while ago at the Ottawa MMM meet up. Probably going to post it as its own topic on the forum as well. It represents your life as a timeline and allows you to enter estimates of your income and expenses that change over time so you can account for things like raises and moving, then models your savings and tells you when you can safely retire.

Cool! Let me know what you think of it. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Also, were you one of the people I showed my alpha version to at the Ottawa MMM meet up? I showed it to a bunch of people (MMM Included) but I can't match your forum name to a face, I'm assuming you were there given your user name.

I just gave this a quick test drive on my iPhone. Pretty cool app!   As my old boss would say, it's got a touch of "programmer's interface", but that can improve over time and it's easy enough to get the hang of it quickly - even on the smaller screen.   It's kinda fun to plug in different numbers/scenarios to see the resulting retirement age/amounts :)

Thanks for sharing it! And kudos on an app in the app store.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely aware of how hard it is to use on the small iPhone screen, I find the difference in usability between it and the iPad version is enormous. However, I'm interested in hearing about any ideas for UI improvements you have, the difficulty of the UI is my main concern with the app right now and I'm always looking for ways to improve it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
