Played in high school and college (in the early-mid 90's).  Playing college golf you take a lot of things for granted, all the sponsors, free clubs/golf/apparel etc.  I still use the Ping Zings I got in college, today.  How's that for frugal :) . These days I play maybe 2-3 times a year, shoot mid-high 70's while drinking beer and having fun.

Same for me.  I saved up my overtime for a month to buy the Zings.  Great clubs.

Fellow golfer.

Costco actually has great golf balls that are comparable to ProV1s for a great price.

Another great benefit of being a mustachian golfer, is that most golfers aren’t mustachian. That turns into cheap used clubs from friends upgrading.

I play a few times a year. My dad's a keen golfer and most of my clubs are hand me downs from him. Until recently I still had a 3 wood with a wooden head in the bag.

Might start playing a bit more often, especially in the autumn/winter (after cricket season). Just couldn't justify paying for club membership (even for small town courses) when I wasn't going to play all that often.

I can hit it OK, but my short game is trash (especially pitches). No judge of distance. Shot 102 when I played in November and probably had 12 or 13 three putts.

I used to play fairly regularly when I worked for a company that did a lot of business on golf courses. I never got good enough to warrant the time spent playing, although I enjoyed the walk and fresh air.

I'm probably the highest handicap player to ever par the world's longest par 3. (390 yards)  :-)

Golf has been a godsend during the pandemic. It's easy to maintain social distancing while playing. If not for golf, I don't know when I would ever be able to get out of the house and see my friends in person. If there is a silver lining in this disaster, it is that I have not had to slog through a 5 hour round since the pandemic began. Most of the public courses around here used to start 5-somes every 8 minutes and now they are limited to 4-somes every 10 minutes. Almost never have a round go over 4 hours. The down side is that it has been harder to get a reservation lately.

Golf has been an absolute godsend during the pandemic.  We joined in March and might have played 2500 holes since then.  The only thing that is open is the golf course.  During the Spring my kids and I would play every day.  Sometimes 5 holes sometimes 45 holes.  As long as you use it and smuggle your beer from home into the course it can be financially beneficial to have a membership.  I have eaten there once it was like Chilis quality.  I dont eat out a lot and even less during pandemic.

The golf club manager told me they average a gain of 8.5 members a year most years.  This year they gained 47 members.  People will find a way to socialize and do activities.

Life long golfer here. I should be better than what I am playing for 25+ yrs.
Funny thing I went up to Utah recently cause by buddy just got a house on a golf course. I told me to bring my tennis racquet with me cause they have a clay court there. We hit the ball for around a little bit and we said let's start playing tennis once a week.
That was about 3 months ago and a group of us been playing tennis regularly since. I'm a bit obsess with tennis right now. Been renting a ball machine to be a bit more consistence. I was pretty decent back in HS but haven't touch tennis in about 20+ yrs.

I worked in private country clubs for roughly 20 years, and all of this is accurate. Got a set of Ping S-59's on a PUD (personal use discount)...for like $130, got free Titleist driver, free Taylor Made 3 wood, 20 free Pro V1's per year...and of course, with knowing other Club Managers, got to play free golf at the area country clubs, including the one I worked at, not to mention being invited to outings, as well as taken by distributors to places like Whistling Straits. I still have those clubs, and when I do play, that's what I use. I don't think I paid to play golf for that entire time.

It does piss you off a bit when you play with someone with a weaker turn/swing than you and is hitting it 20 yards past you with the new equipment.

I remember the first time I had to pay a greens fee...and I was stunned. Then had to buy balls...I was like "wait, people pay $50/dozen for these?" Then the free tees dried up, and didn't get my spikes changed for free, my bag started to break down. Talk about a wake up call. lol

I've played golf ever since I was a kid.  Played on HS golf team.  I am ok, not great.
Always loved the game but, not the culture.
Have had to deal with way too many crabby, old, entitled people on the golf course.

I'm considering an annual golf pass for $545, but I need to golf 34 rounds in order to make it cost effective. I think I can make it to 20 rounds pretty easy, but I think i'm 50/50 on getting to 34 rounds.
