Played in high school and college (in the early-mid 90's). Playing college golf you take a lot of things for granted, all the sponsors, free clubs/golf/apparel etc. I still use the Ping Zings I got in college, today. How's that for frugal :) . These days I play maybe 2-3 times a year, shoot mid-high 70's while drinking beer and having fun.
I worked in private country clubs for roughly 20 years, and all of this is accurate. Got a set of Ping S-59's on a PUD (personal use discount)...for like $130, got free Titleist driver, free Taylor Made 3 wood, 20 free Pro V1's per year...and of course, with knowing other Club Managers, got to play free golf at the area country clubs, including the one I worked at, not to mention being invited to outings, as well as taken by distributors to places like Whistling Straits. I still have those clubs, and when I do play, that's what I use. I don't think I paid to play golf for that entire time.
It does piss you off a bit when you play with someone with a weaker turn/swing than you and is hitting it 20 yards past you with the new equipment.
I remember the first time I had to pay a greens fee...and I was stunned. Then had to buy balls...I was like "wait, people pay $50/dozen for these?" Then the free tees dried up, and didn't get my spikes changed for free, my bag started to break down. Talk about a wake up call. lol
