My old 1988 Nissan had 359000km on it by the time it was junked, but the engine wasn't the original.

I had a 2000 mazda protoge that I put around 205,000 miles on.  It probably ran for quite a bit more.  Just normal maintenance, no major repairs.  Sold it for 2,000, which shocked me.

The thing that I really liked about that car was it's handling in the snow.  It was one of the best cars I've driven in the snow, except maybe a jeep with 4wd.

I've had rotten luck with cars.

1991 Ford Explorer: Bought at 90,000 miles. Re-built transmission at 110,000 miles. Re-built engine at 130,000 miles. Traded in at 155,000 miles.

2003 Dodge Ram: Bought at 73,000 miles. Engine and transmission were fine, but I spent a couple thousand on 3 (3!!!) heater cores, new ball joints, struts, and miscellany before 110,00 miles. Burnt into a fiery crisp due to electrical malfunction at 135,000 miles.

2001 Ford Ranger: Bought at 140,000 miles. Engine exploded at 150,000 miles. Sold it for scrap.

2007 Ford F-150: Bought at 88,000 miles. Spent a couple thousand on various repairs (brake calipers, power window malfunction, something with the drive train). Sold at 120,000 miles.

I finally had got sick of trucks and SUVs (I grew up on a farm, so that was all I ever knew) and bought a Prius in 2010. It has been the best car I've even owned, and it's not even close.

2007 Toyota Prius. Bought at 39,000 miles. No major repairs until the hybrid battery went out last summer at 168,000 miles. That was an $1800 repair that I was happy to pay for. Currently I'm at 178,000 miles and no more trouble so far.

This is a case of vehicles with bad track records for longevity.  Maybe not engine trans issues for some however everything else........... Yes even the Prius.... i am a big toyota fan however those batteries in the hybrids..........  ughhhhh

My 1996 Ford Ranger has 222K on it, although most were put on by previous owners. The engine is still going fine; the transmission could use new synchros. Lots of other (less-important) bits of it are pretty worn out: the front suspension is at the point it can barely be aligned properly, the interior is coming apart (including the headliner), the fuel gauge hasn't worked since I bought it, etc.

1988 Chevy Sprint - Bought (2012) at 46,000 miles.  Ran it into the trailer hitch of a Jeep at 69,000 miles (2013). :(  Car was totaled, not a scratch on the Jeep.

1996 Volvo 850 Wagon - Bought (2013) at 155,000 miles.  No problems, but sold (2014) to a bearded musician at 168,000 miles.  I'm sure it's still out there.

1999 Chevy Metro - Bought (2014) at 146,000 miles.  Engine locked up and died at 182,000 miles (2016).  Scrapped.

1992 Buick Roadmaster Wagon - Bought (2014) at 158,000 miles.  Engine gave out at 200,775 (August 2016).  Scrapped.

2009 Hyundai Accent - Bought last weekend on a lark with 250,000 miles and a bypassed heater core for almost nothing.  We'll see how it goes.  It was maintained by someone that I know is outrageously meticulous about changing fluids way more often than he has to.

The best purchase I ever made in my life was (after some serious Consumer Reports homework that informed me the Chevy Prizm was basically identical to a Toyota Corolla but sold for thousands less) to purchase a 2001 Prizm back in 2004. I think I paid around $5K for it. I drove that car across the country, into the mountains on crazy dirt roads for hiking trips, and it's still going strong today at 160,000 miles. I am anticipating that it will keep going well over 200,000 miles.

Prius battery is a non-issue. I estimate that I've saved $3000 after accounting for the cost of a replacement battery as compared to a similar-sized car that averages 30 MPG. And that's making the (unfair) assumption that the non-hybrid vehicle wouldn't have had major repairs.

As far as my other choice of vehicles is concerned...Yeah...Fords (and Dodges) basically suck. Or at least they did for the 20-year stretch during which my vehicles were manufactured. It would be really hard to tempt me to buy anything other than a Toyota or a Honda (or maybe a Nissan Leaf) at this point. My Dad is a Ford Man and youthful indoctrination is a tough habit to break.

1995 Subaru Legacy GT -- 255k miles (had to replace the head gasket at @130k -- the Subarus in that generation were notorious for that problem, which stemmed from boring out the 2.2L engine to make it 2.5l, thereby making the space between the cylinder wall and water jacket too thin).

2008 Subaru Outback 2.5i -- currently has 226K miles on it. Engine still runs well, but lots of other things need addressing, and I'm told the head gasket on this one is leaking (externally, not internally like the 1995). Strongly considering dropping a few grand into it.  I think I could get another 50k+ miles if I did.  Currently driving a 2012 Outback Limited (bought used with @51k miles on it).

297k miles on an '01 Olds Alero, all mine.  I sold it and last I heard it was still going strong.  I changed the oil religiously when due.  I'm not an aggressive driver either - I didn't exactly baby it, but I didn't beat it up either.

It had a modest number of maintenance issues over the years - brakes at a regular interval, the CV joints went out, first one side, then the other, about at 150k and 175k, a couple internal engine sensors and the coolant system popped a gasket on the thermostat housing north of 200k, a power window module wore out and needed replacing after 200-220k or so.  What pushed me over the edge to sell it was the fuel pump going (which left me stranded).  I replaced that then sold it.

It was my clown commute car, hence the high miles.  Well, it also got multiple road trips that would rack up 1-2k miles / trip as well.  In thinking back....I think I put a 600 mile road trip on it the 2nd weekend I had it.

I'm still driving my first car, 2006 Honda Civic. Bought at a little over 3k miles, just crossed the 130k mark a few weeks back. She's still young enough that we have plenty of years left together.

God bless the original owner for being a consuma sucka and deciding to upgrade to a Beamer when she got a promotion a few months after buying the Civic brand new. The fact that she was a smoker and the car smelled like it was a nice little bonus when negotiating price - and since she'd only driven it for a few months, some heavy Febreezing quickly got rid of the problem.

It's going to be an emotional day when I finally decide to sell that car.

Had a 98 Ford Ranger that I made it to 198k miles with. Was really hoping to make it to 200k, but it wasn't in the cards. Currently driving an 07 Pontiac Vibe - bought with 98k on it last April, plan to still be driving it in 10-13 years when I retire. Should have close to 300k on it by then.

'85 F-350, either 3xxK or 4xxK, it's rolled over twice since I got it and at had rolled over at least once (I suspect twice) before I got it.

Used to have a 60s Ford with a 289 that had about 350k miles on original driveline and still ran great, sold it because the frame was rotted to the point of start to be a bit flexy and I didn't have the space to pull the body off and fix the frame proper, so sold it to someone that could.

Vehicles last as long as you want them to. Just about anything can be fixed or maintained indefinitely, apart from maybe truly extreme collision damage. I'm of the buy what you like that fits your needs and keep it forever mindset.

Husband had a 1966 Datsun 1600 sports that we watched go round the clock (100,000 miles) 6 times while he owned it. We don't know how many times it had been round before he bought it in 1984.

It sadly rusted away to the point of no return. Tears were shed by both of us the day she left, I'm not ashamed to admit.

That tells me that a lot of you are driving way too much !
:-)

I bought my car when arrived in OZ in 2009 with 80k on it. It has only 120k on it now!
I would do the same exercise with not the number of kms (or miles) but how long you've kept them for and how little you've used them.

Much more mustachian exercise IMO haha

That's what I thought at the time.  The guy I sold it to held it for 8 years and then sold it at Amelia Island for $241,000.  It set a then-record for an early 911.  That car is now worth even more.  Oh well.

76 Volva had 385,000 miles on it when the odometer stopped working. I drove it for another 2 years after that so probably around 410k-420k miles.

2001 Nissan Maxima Anniversary Edition (her name was "Audrey" when I drove her).  Bought in 2005 for $13k with 66k miles, she now has 269k and my 19 year old son has her.  When we took her in to the dealer recently for the airbag recall, the service manager offered us $5,000.  We said no.

In 2013, I bought my mom's 2007 Prius for $7k (trade in value) at 100k miles.  That's still going strong at 167k miles with no repairs whatsoever.

We are very diligent with maintenance which my son DIY's.  Yay!!

THIS!    it's crazy when i tell people my maxima has almost 300k on it and doesnt burn a drop of oil they are amazed.  These 6 cylinder engines are virtually bullet proof if maintained.

282,000 on my daily driver 1991 Toyota MR2.  I do need to keep the oil topped off and am on the second engine.  First engine went at 180,000 miles when the oil pump failed.  I've been able to keep on the rust work pretty well.  Now it's looking like the end of this car will be when parts are no longer available.  I've already had to substitute some "racing" parts for stock simply because there are no remaining stock ones in the system (and the "normal" aftermarket isn't producing them either).  Example, I now have a fancy aluminum "racing" radiator and silicone coolant hoses simply because those are the only ones that you can get now!

2006 Prius - We will hit 300k next year.  I am not sure exact miles, I think the last time I looked was 285k.  We are hoping to get another 100k-200k miles out of it. We have never had to replace the batteries.

That's what I want to hear!  (Just bought an '06 Sienna with 104,000 miles and am hoping to keep it for a loooong time).

My track record isn't as impressive as all of you, but my 2005 Corolla is going strong at 170,000 miles.  I bought it new and due to a fortunate hail storm the insurance paid me out for it and I pocketed the money and kept the dents so I only paid ~$7k for the car.   Manual transmission and manual windows mean my young children understand the universal 'roll down your window!' symbol that none of their peers grok.

2000 Honda CR-V -- 254,000 miles and still going. Early in its life I think I was putting almost 19,000 miles a year on the odometer. Mercifully this has tapered off by half thanks to a more sane spatial relationship between home and work, and not getting regularly corralled into designated driver service!

We had a 1995 Honda Civic that blew a head gasket at 429,000 km in 2009. This was during the financial crisis and the provincial govt had a cash for clunkers program. As I remember, it gave the choice between $300 cash, $500 towards a new car or a $1,000 credit towards a new bike. We still ride that bike 7 years later.

Wow - 429k!  My spouse managed about 360k miles on a Mazda 626 she purchased in '92 for $4k.  It had about 95k mile then - just got rid of it last year.  Donated it to local public radio.

429,000 KM not 429k MILES so about 266k MILES. Nothing to scoff at but also not out of the ordinary for a well maintained Honda. I sold a '96 Civic earlier this year that had about 280k on it. Still had the original clutch, not to mention almost everything else.

1972 Ford Ranchero for 205K miles on original motor (351-Windsor) i drove as a kid.    Was rebuilt and had 240k when we gave it away...   It was probably far more expensive in many years to keep it running compared to new (major rust repairs and interior renovation, etc.), but it was the first car my Dad ever bought new and it outlasted the 1995 Lincoln disaster he bought later.

Holy crap, you people drive a lot!

My favorite type of vacation (within the lower 48) is a road trip!  We have a toddler right now that doesn't love being in the car for very long so those vacations might be on hold for a little bit.  We are starting to explore travel through train now and I minus the limitations on where you can get to I really like it.

I also commute but even when I only lived 4 miles from work we put a higher than average miles per year on the car because of the road trip vacations.

I love this so much. Having a 70s 911 as your only car is epic in and of itself. Bravo!

my jeep cherokee = 308,900 and still driving it
my husbands jeep cherokee (which used to be mine) = 330,000 and still driving it

GREAT TO HEAR! My jeep cherokee just hit 200K and I'm down to hit 300K if possible.

what year is yours?  It's that 4.0L engine that seems to be so long lasting.  I know some have gotten over 600,000 miles!  We are shooting for 400,000 now.  Ours are 1990 and a 2000.  Never had any major trouble.  The other day it stuttered at highway speed and I got all worried it would be a major problem...turns out one spark plug needed replacing....nice!  Fingers crossed.  We change the oil regularly and then just fix broken parts as they die....window motor died recently....broke a shock and needed to replace.  Our miles are very HARD miles on rough rocky roads since I have a wildlife consulting business.
