I've had rotten luck with cars.
1991 Ford Explorer: Bought at 90,000 miles. Re-built transmission at 110,000 miles. Re-built engine at 130,000 miles. Traded in at 155,000 miles.
2003 Dodge Ram: Bought at 73,000 miles. Engine and transmission were fine, but I spent a couple thousand on 3 (3!!!) heater cores, new ball joints, struts, and miscellany before 110,00 miles. Burnt into a fiery crisp due to electrical malfunction at 135,000 miles.
2001 Ford Ranger: Bought at 140,000 miles. Engine exploded at 150,000 miles. Sold it for scrap.
2007 Ford F-150: Bought at 88,000 miles. Spent a couple thousand on various repairs (brake calipers, power window malfunction, something with the drive train). Sold at 120,000 miles.
I finally had got sick of trucks and SUVs (I grew up on a farm, so that was all I ever knew) and bought a Prius in 2010. It has been the best car I've even owned, and it's not even close.
2007 Toyota Prius. Bought at 39,000 miles. No major repairs until the hybrid battery went out last summer at 168,000 miles. That was an $1800 repair that I was happy to pay for. Currently I'm at 178,000 miles and no more trouble so far.
