Who Instals Your Appliances?
« on: November 26, 2019, 04:49:54 PM »
A few years ago I bought an appliance from Home Depot.  I had no idea they used a 3rd party vendor.  The people who came were very bad.  The worst was calling customer service because I kept having to talk to Home Depot who then talked to the 3rd party who then talked to their team who then talked to the 3rd party who then talked to Home Depot who then talked to me.  I vowed to not do that again.

Just recently, I bought an appliance from a local store who said all their installers are their own employees.  It went extremely well.  The guys even pealed off some left over sticky tape from the packaging.  It was a completely good experience.

So, I just bought another appliance with the same local company and ... they have ALSO started using a 3rd party vendor.  I had no idea.  I didn't ask again as I should have.  I had the same experience as that first time and I had no idea it was a 3rd party until it was too late.  Back on the phone...wasting an entire day...still not resolved.  This will be a week long battle.

Where does a person buy an appliance to get a good installation and a good delivery?  Who still does things in-house?

Do I need to hire my own person to pick up an appliance and install it?  At least that way I deal with one person, one phone number, one relationship.  Plus, there is an incentive to cultivate the relationship.

I recently bought a washing machine from home depot. I didn't pay the extra 25 to install it because I was going to do it myself. The delivery guy insisted I give him the hoses which he installed and he even made sure it was level. He then told me he wanted a 5 on the survey. Ah ha! I have also had something installed through amazon which went well. Since you are on this forum I recommend you install most things yourself. My mom uses thumbtack for local handy people.

Anything that hooks up to gas - stove and dryer in my house - needs to be installed by a plumber, and I have generally had my own plumber do it, which is not cheaper than paying for Lowe’s to do it, but I trust him more.

If it involves actual plumbing for gas or water (furnace, water heater, dryer), I hire a plumber. If it's just screw-in water connections and electricity (stove, dishwasher, fridge, faucets), we DIY.

You can look up a lot of youtube videos, in the day you spent making calls, and waiting for 3rd party to show up, etc.

All apliances will come with instructions , including install and maintenance instructions.

We do it ourselves, and have not gotten shocked, or burnt anything down, or caused a leak, etc.

The bonus is, once you do it one time;  it is not as intimidatiing , and has a shorter learning curve the next time.

We rent and our previous landlord has used a local handyman who specializes in appliance repair. He also sells refurbished appliances so we bought a washer and dryer set from him. He knew that we did a lot of laundry (family of 8) so he made sure they were large machines that weren't prone to breaking. He delivered and installed them. And when one started leaking a week later he came back out and fixed it for free.

If you check around locally there are probably a few guys doing something similar. Selling and repairing and installing used appliances.

We only pay for install of gas appliances. These require a licensed gas fitter to install and we hire them ourselves (ie, not through a big box store).

Otherwise, we only pay for delivery and removal of the old appliance. We make sure it's disconnected before they arrive so we don't get charged for that.

I've bought a couple appliances from Home Depot, but won't buy anymore from them. The first stove they tried to deliver arrived with cut electrical wires hanging out the back. The 2nd one (which took an additional 2 weeks to arrive) was missing a burner cap and it took them half a dozen phone calls and 2 months to send a replacement. Same rigmarole with having to deal with HD, the appliance manufacturer, plus some third party customer service org.

The next time we need an appliance I'm going to a largish locally owned place that has a scratch and dent and last years model warehouse. I'll pick out something in stock (ie I can already assess it's condition and know it exists) and have them deliver it.
