Drive - 10 miles in, 25 miles back 3 days/week (kid pickup schedule) and 20 miles round-trip 2 days/week. No showers at work, otherwise I'd find a different excuse to not bike :(.

I commute to work by air, three weeks in Yellowknife, two weeks home in Calgary. I pay for the airfare and taxi myself, about $500 roundtrip including my airport shuttle to and from home. Quite hefty on the pocketbook and I feel guilty about my personal carbon footprint. On the other hand, I rarely drive when I am home, and spend a maximum of $30 for gas every month. To make up for that, I ride my bike to and from work and to run errands in Yellowknife. Today was balmy, only -21. I was sweating when I got to my office.

I drive the 2.6 mile or 3.5 miles, depending on the root I take, to work. In the spring I'll be looking to get a bike and bike the 3.5 mile root until the winter comes. I have lived in the South most my life so even though I've lived up North for a 3 years now I can't handle the cold, hell Monday was the first day I have ever seen temperatures in the negatives.

A 3.5 mile root? Must be an enormous aspen grove!  I would use a mountain bike if the root on your route is bumpy. :)

Well I do have to go over some big hills that do have a lot of trees, so the route does take me over a lot of large roots. :P

Other - Motorcycle full time (except occasional suit days or rain) for the past 10 years.  Living in SoCal it doesn't rain much.

This, except I ride in the rain every day. Heated gear and rain gear make a major difference.

Bicycle to train station -> this actually earns me money and not only in the "invisible" kind of way (less gas and better health). We receive 0.21€/km (+-0.177$/mile) we drive to and from work on a bicycle. This money is a tax-free bonus.
Then the train, fully paid by my employer. Hometown of my parents is the first stop on the way to work so I can always go by train for free to them as well. Even in weekends / on holidays.

I live +-40km (25 miles) from work. So in theory I could make around 3500€/year (4700$/year) if I'd use my bike all the way, but since the alternative is a quick, dry, warm and free train-ride where I can read books I think it's worth it.

(Always use bike for almost anything. Got my first car when I was 27. Driving to work would take me close to an hour because of the ridiculous rush hour traffic)

Bike 4 days a week, commuter rail 1 day. Voted biking since I'm racking up 80 miles a week for my commute alone

I take the bus. My bus commute means my wife and I only need one car between the two of us. She works farther away and transit is impractical, but she carpools most days.

I'll be one of the few to admit in the comments that I still drive.  It's over 20 miles away, and I leave work at 10:30pm when I'm lucky, sometimes as late as 2 am.  I could take a combo of buses to work, but not home because they stop running.  Biking - it's possible, but 1) I'm physically tired at the end of a shift as it is and 2) The idea of biking beside the highway at midnight scares the crap out of me, especially with the fog and rain we get.

I'm working on what I think is the best option - find a new job at the hospital that's less than a mile from my house.  I could bike or walk through quiet residential neighborhoods, taking barely more time than driving, especially once you factor in finding parking.  I walked/biked for 5 years at a previous job and loved it.  No traffic, and it takes a consistent amount of time to get to/from work.

I ride a 125 motorbike. Extremely cheap to run, it costs about $10 a week in petrol, $20 a month insurance and a grand $30 a year in tax :D

Since my husband is the worker, and I stay home, I used his info. We live in a very rural area, and he works 20 miles away, 12 hour shifts, health situation, driving is the only way.
Since my son got employed at the same place, and he lives 2 miles away, they do carpool when they work the same shift. That's not often as they are in different areas of the plant

Mostly public transportation, but depending on weather and time, I walk or ride my bike as well.  Or a combo-sometimes I take the subway to work and walk home.

I drive my 7 mile commute currently.  On the plus side, I do my total of 40 hours in 2 long shifts and one meeting, so I only do 3 round trips a week.  Once the nicer weather hits I'm going to try biking the commute for my 2 longer shifts.  For my meeting there are time constraints that have to be met and could not be done with a bike.  My husband has a bike I will start with and if it works out I will have to look into getting one for myself.  DH thinks I'm crazy for wanting to try and is trying to talk me out of it, but I think once I start it and he realizes I can do it and get there and back safely he will go along with it.

I drive 3.5 miles each way. I mostly rode my bike 5 miles each way or took the bus/train for 2 years while in grad school, but I'm not comfortable biking the routes available to get to work, and driving takes me 10 minutes vs. 45 minutes via public transit. My current rent it way below market, so it's not worth it to move either.

Sorry, I love my bike :)

I don't blame you. Cargo bikes are life-changing awesomeness. I may love my little 3 speed, but "Big Mama" is  the nearly unstoppable workhorse. http://i.imgur.com/W6eJ49c.jpg

I can choose between driving (20 min; free, depending on how you look at it), subway (35 min; under $2 each way), and company vanpool (30 min; free).  I vary it depending on my mood and patience in the morning.  I could bike also but there are significant safety risks in the downtown area ranging from accidents (one colleague was creamed by a car from behind) to robbery (gangs prowl the tunnels; another colleague was relieved of his bike at knife point).

I bike in the summer and take the subway in the winter months. Drivers are too crazy here when there is snow on the curbs/less daylight.

Motorcycle for ~9 months of the year, car for the other 3.

I'm contemplating bicycling to work (~9 miles), but I really enjoy my motorcycle commute to work with low traffic and enough good turns.

Most of the roads I like to bicycle on are the same roads I like to motorcycle on.  Ah, don't make me choose!  I had to buy two sets of tires for my old Beemer last year, so there was 500 bucks just for that.  Only $125 for insurance for the year and 45 mpg though.

I know MMM sold his motorcycle when he had kids, but I'd like to see a serious discussion on here (or is there one?) on the benefits of the motorcycle vs. owning a car. High MPG, DIY maintenance, less expensive generally...there are the weather/seasonal limitations, and of course the safety aspect but only if you're in it for the "thrills."

I don't own one and never have, but I've driven them and REALLY want one for the above reasons ;)

To answer the main question.
I sold my car so I take the public autobus to near work
but it lets me off 2 km near work where I walk for 10 min in wilderness
and another 10-15 to the side of the road to get to work.Rinse and repeat on the way back and yes
during night shifts there is so much darkness i got to bring a flashlight(my cellphone) to be wary of loose dogs.

I will not submit to a fancy pants car..
government is building bike roads in a few years so then ill probably bike the 11km to work and back.
in the meantime im getting near 1 hour daily walks/jogs thats gotta be healthy.

Car, 15 miles one way.  Not going to change any time soon, and even with a shorter commute I'll still maintain a car because I enjoy having one.  Besides, not all of us are blessed with the luxury of being able to pick up everything to move within biking distance of employment.

As ranty as MMM is against "car clowns", vehicles are a hobby to some of us.

I wake up, then walk the 40 feet to my home office.

It's a brutal commute.  :)

old thread, but started with general motorcycle stuff (and eventually devolved into safety jibberjabber like they all do)
