mmm vs rob greenfield lifestyle
« on: October 18, 2015, 05:41:13 AM »
a bit extreme but i found both of them to be fairly similar in how they minimize their lifestyles. just one got to fi by keeping track of their income/spending, the other just gave up on it mostly.

i know it isnt a good direct comparison but had enough of the same ideas on minimizing that i thouht to share it. no idea what rob plans when he has to "retire" from old age/poor health though. maybe he has enough money from sponsors or brand name that he would be fine? i dont know his exit strategy which concerns me if i were to replicate it. mine would be hit fi, then if i want to, do what he does afterwards.

His focus appears to be more devoted to holistic, low impact, efficient living and environmental causes than in building a nut for financial independence.

Over the prior years I had been running a successful business and had saved up a fair amount of money.  I donated all but $15,000 to good causes and committed to earning no more than $15,000 per year or owning more than $15,000 in possessions and $15,000 in assets.  This is to keep my focus away from money now and in the future and to keep my focus on the beauties of life that are freely available to us all.

I think there are some parallels in lifestyle and thus something to learn, but different goals. Also note that he's single and devoted to causes where MMM is a family man.

Very cool site BTW, thanks for posting. I had never heard of this guy!

It doesn't seem like he is building FI... but I can't tell if he considers himself FI because by his standards, he has enough money for his lifestyle...He doesn't seem to "work" a job or anything from what I could find on him

he has his "monthly" $50 from 4% off of the $15k... maybe he is FI? To me, he is MMM if he didn't have a family... alternate universe?

Between my cell phone bills, planned and perceived obsolescence, and the desire for all sorts of accessories, I was spending a lot of money. My cell phone bill alone was over $100 a month, which was over $1,200 per year. I calculated that in all the time that I used cell phones I spent over $15,000. Spending money means going to work and I decided there were many other ways I’d rather spend my time than working to pay for my cell phone. I’ve applied this thought to most of my life and currently do not have a monthly bill to my name.

Years ago I made an oath to myself to never take advice from single, childless, twenty-something white guys, but the blog is an enjoyable read. He certainly has passion for what he is doing. I guess my anxiety is too high to live a lifestyle like this (although no bills sounds nice!) I would always worry about what would happen if I got sick or what would happen to me as I got older.

There is a lot that isn't said on these types of blogs. Sort of a "look how happy I am!" facade that covers up the fact that he is young, healthy, and male.

I remember MMM having that problem too when he said he "self" insures... and people claimed the same things
http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/11/01/our-new-237-per-month-health-insurance-plan/

he even suggested that they need to be pretty healthy and young, or might have to get a job again :D

Very cool.  Thanks for the link.  I find people like Rob, Mark Boyle, Daniel Suelo, etc. very inspiring.  I've been getting deeper into minimalism and simplicity over the last year or two and have considered doing something similar to live more in line with my beliefs but I don't know if I could do something so extreme.  I've become too domesticated and soft.  Maybe if I read enough stories like these I'll work up the courage to try.

I especially like his Simplify Your Life post: http://robgreenfield.tv/simplify-your-life/.  It really is amazing how far removed from nature we are.

Yeah right I am not some green party activist or member, but if people want by their free will live like that fine let them do that, but it does not get my admiration.

I was disgusted by this movie:
Into the Wild (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/

Look living on nature sounds cool, but if you get sick or poisoned at that point it can go very badly.

Please don't get me wrong. I did get the Avatar movie message that earth should be saved etc. but this environmental extremist lifestyle is not for me.

The same thing popped into my head as well. I had my first pulmonary embolism in my late twenties, and another just recently at 33. It's all fun and games until you come down with a major life threatening illness.

I used to want to go live in the Alaska Bush, away from civilization like those guys on Life Below Zero do. Now, given my health and increasing aches and pains all over, I just wouldn't be able to.

As a wealthy Mustachian you can choose to have a summer cottage.

I myself don't hate nature but I am a city person also.

What Rob Green does is the poor man backpacker lifestyle in the extreme...
I get that you all are not wealthy and while doing ok I am not millionaire.

That said it looks like the POOR mans life style to live like extremists and that is certainly not my wish.

A summer cottage nothing to remote and in a safe area can be nice though and while not my cup of tea there are likely wild life tours for tourists.

I don't get this extreme environmentalists or frugal extreme lifestyle unless you  are so poor that is your choice.
