Mint Mobile changes and sale
« on: May 02, 2024, 02:13:33 PM »
Hey all, I have been a Mint Mobile user for a couple years and happy with the service. They have been acquired by T-Mobile and there are some changes. If you've been thinking of switching over, now is a good time, as they are making all their plans $15/month, even the unlimited-data plan. There are a couple of phones on sale, too.

But I'm not here to shill for Mint. What I'm excited about is their re-commitment to the low prices and the upcoming roaming in Canada feature. I've been to Camp Mustache Toronto several times, and been without service. That's fine at camp itself, where most interaction is in-person by design. But it's nice to not have to rely on wi-fi when arranging travel to and from. I'm thinking of last year when I had a hard time meeting up with a friend outside the international terminal. Turns out there are two international terminals at YYZ, and we were each at a different one. It would have gone so much smoother if I could have called!

With the large Canadian and US-ian population of this board, this might be good news to someone else, too.

Same & Improved: Your service is getting better, again

Just wanted to clarify a bit - they committed to keeping their $15/month plan, which is 5GB data. And they are offering promotional pricing where unlimited* is $15/month for the first 3 months. Then it will resume being $30/month (which is still great for unlimited!)

Mint's good enough that we use the 25GB plan for my dad's home internet. We set up our version of a "mobile hotspot" (an LTE modem connected to a wifi router.) Because of our "hotspot" setup**, the "unlimited" plan would actually be worse...

* Unlimited is actually 40GB. See Plans for pricing and other details.
** 10GB mobile hotspot on unlimited plans
*** Umm.... AKSTUALLY!

Yep, we realized this when my partner was tethering more and more to work while traveling. I have the cheapest plan, he has the middle plan because it offers more of what he needed than the highest plan.

One advantage of the change: until this past weekend, we needed to have at least a minimal cellular connection to start wifi calling. Now it works in airplane mode, just like it should.

I just have a hard time believing they will let us get away with spending so much less long term while receiving full service...

@neo von retorch @ixtap thanks for the additional info and clarifications (I assumed any Mustachian would do their due diligence upon switching, but it's nice to have some of the caveats spelled out).

I am glad they haven't yanked the low-price rug out from under us immediately upon the merger completion. If and when things change, I am fully prepared to switch to a better deal.

How these things go is, I take things way too literally. Then I question if my version of information is accurate, and I do some research, and if I confirm my version of information then I feel compelled to annotate the other "literal" statements made to ensure accuracy. It's a curse. I need help. Send help!

We just switched from verizon to the unlimited 15/month for 3 months.  I can't believe it took us so long to switch but it was easy peasy and service even seems better.  We will see if we want the unlimited plan or a mid tier plan in 3 months.

Stay calm and carry a towel.

That second picture was the first thing on my first Geocities web site circa 1998....

Before I even had a cell phone...

My annual renewal for Mint doesn't come until Feb 2025.  I have a $45 referral credit so my annual renewal should only be about $157.  If not for that, I'd consider US Cellular which offers more data, about $23/year cheaper, and the option to use Verizon's network instead of T-Mobile.

Yeah via referrals I paid $0 during my recent renewal and still have $100 banked for next April.

Well that sounds like a deal. I'm not seeing it on the website, but guess it's moot as they do not offer services in my area.

I think they meant US Mobile.

Check your junk mail. I just got an email from Mint with a code for 6 months of paramount+ free.

Ah, that makes sense. There are subtle differences, like Mint includes hot spot data in your basic data allowance where US Mobile it is an add on. US Mobile can make calls to a lot of different international destinations, while Mint is only Canada and Mexico.  So best for folks to check each out & find the plan that fits their usage patterns.

I just got the Paramount code email as well.  I don't watch TV and so don't have cable.  What is the catch on the offer?  I do have a TV in this motor home, so maybe roku or something?  Probably won't worry about it, but there has to be a catch.

No catch, except you have to make a Paramount+ account and give them a credit card number (some people balk at that).  You can cancel immediately and your card will not be charged when your 6 months is up.

Do you already have a Roku?  That's how I watch streaming services on my TV.  If you don't have a smart tv or some kind of device with streaming apps on it, then you'd have to watch on your computer or phone.

Paramount in the past has handed out free month codes like candy.  When you cancel, watch out for the "get two more months free" offer - I did that the first time, and they tried to charge me for the 2nd month.  I was able to catch the upcoming charge and cancel before it the charge when through.  Now I just say "no thanks" to that offer when I cancel.

Did the email come from Mint? I didn't get one.
