Minnesota Viking walks to work
« on: August 03, 2016, 08:09:30 AM »
Forgive if this has already been posted. German Moritz Boehringer is a Minnesota Viking rookie who walks to work. His reason? No car, and he wants to save his money: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/german-nfl-player-walks-for-an-hour-to-get-to-vikings-practice-every-day/?linkId=27221386 Wise man. ;)

That distance could be swiftly covered with an inexpensive bike too. But considering that his job is basically to be physically fit, his walking habit is rather convenient.

I hope this means the route is pleasant to walk and/or bike. I'm sure the team would prefer that their players not wander into areas with dangerous levels of crime or traffic.

I'm guessing he lives in roughly the same area as the practice site. I'm not exactly sure where the Vikes are practicing these days (new stadium is being built, as is a new practice site, I believe) but the suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul are pretty walk/bike friendly. The comments on the article are pretty funny, people talking about cold weather and walking/biking to work. One commenter wrote basically, "You make it sound like a death wish. I walked 2 miles to work in Minneapolis year-round for years. I wore a hat." 😂

That's gotta be rough in December.

Lucky for him, the Vikings don't play much in January, typically!  ;)

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

I like how he acknowledges that others think he is nuts. Then he politely describes how the American lifestyle (big cars, lots of driving, fast food, & huge malls) doesn't make any sense to him.

LMFAO.

The wide receiver lives three miles away from the Vikings' practice facility, which means he's covering roughly six miles round trip. That's the equivalent of walking across 105 football fields a day.
It takes about 15-20 minutes for the average person to walk a mile, so Boehringer is basically walking for about an hour just to get to practice.

The HORRORS of walking 105 football fields a day!  SIX MILES!  Nuts.  Seriously, I mean, the guy runs across football fields for a living, what's he doing walking across MORE football fields to get there?  ::rolleyes::

Unfortunately for Boehringer, that simple plan is going turn into a death wish once winter hits in Minnesota.

Seriously.  I mean, how would you ever survive without a car in the winter?  Minnesota is one of those states that doesn't, apparently, offer people "clothes" so you'll freeze to death walking around in shorts and a tshirt.

Except for that guy.  When I was in college, in Iowa (so not quite as cold as MN), there was "that guy."  From Alaska.  Who walked around campus in shorts and a tshirt all winter long.  And it didn't seem to bother him in the slightest.

That being said, it makes sense that he wants to save money. Boehringer's rookie deal with the Vikings only included $150,000 in guaranteed money. A nice car could easily eat up one-third of that.

Because... you know, the only option for a car is a "nice car"?  To be fair, I'm not sure a football player would fit in a lot of economy cars, but you don't need to spend $50k on a car...

I think the writer's biases are showing. ;)

Dude can live his life how he wants, but wonder how the whole "walk home from practice" thing is going to work for him after 2-a-days in full pads, or full contact practices?  Good for him if he can do it, but I wonder if he's not rethinking this the first time he pulls or strains something or whatever.

Sounds like a great way to warm up and cool down.

The guy is physically fit for a living.  I'm sure he can handle a 3 mile walk after work.

Training camp is in Mankato.  They'll only be there for a couple more weeks.

This is smart on his part as the odds of him making the team are very low.  At best, he can hope to make the practice squad so he's far from the typical rich NFL player and probably isn't even thinking about winter right now.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
