Millionaire Average Joes or Nords in the News
« on: June 18, 2014, 11:29:43 AM »
http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/how-these-average-joes-retired-millionaires-142631833.html

Pretty sad when I can immediately read a yahoo story and instantly recognize a Mustachian poster as if I knew him.  Perhaps I read this blog too much.

I was wondering how long it would take for a thread to pop up on this article.

Lots of typical Yahoo comments. Here's a gem from "Joel":

"401k's are great but you need to be 59.5 to begin using them and not be punished. If you can live for next to nothing in some back woods in Kentucky and manage to get "next to nothing" + a little bit more then you can retire."

Waiting for a Ken M sighting.

Very cool article although I'd like to see more "retire without being a millionaire" stories on the mainstream media. Doubt that will happen even though there are many of us out there. I'm around Nords age, retired at about the same age he did, and have been retired about as long as he has, maybe longer, and at about 1/4 of what he has. It's doable.

Yup.
Yeah but there are enough people who lived exactly like Nords and his wife and have the military pension and medical yet have a bottomless pit of debt and not one cent towards a stash when they retire. Even with a pension at an early age, if you aren't living the frugal life it won't matter too much. And military pay including BAH (at least for enlisted) for the amount you work (24/7 in many cases for years!) often comes out to less than minimum wage. And many service members spouses can't work at higher paying career-type jobs because of the constant moves.

Yup.

Whenever I seem comments like the ones on Yahoo, I get the impression that they are bitter about not having made the correct choices in their youth. Their reactions show that they are entitled to a successful relatively stress-free life, despite not having the discipline to do so themselves.

Nords explicitly states that he lives in Hawaii. However, more recent comments have been positive about retirement.

:)

Nords happens to be
1. credible
and
2. patient enough to deal with ridiculous people like Joel

I like people getting the ER word out.

Yea, I saw this one coming too. Typical Yahoo forum... but I also hate people saying "He must have no kids". I was definitely tempted to post "Um, yea he does"... but they'd just keep finding excuses to justify why they haven't been able to do it themselves. I did like the guy who pointed out that he lives in Hawaii, one of the highest cost of living areas (on paper) in the country.

This isn't the first time Nords has been featured in one of these:

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/fortune/0706/gallery.retire50.fortune/5.html

But yeah, the Yahoo! comments are always the best.  Agree with what Oscar_C said:

Great to see Nord get some recognition. Always one of the first with intelligent answers on here. Doubt he will be bothered or even look at what any of the comments say. All the matters is believing in yourself and what your doing. Haters are going to hate as they say!

Holy shit, THIS is the best comment on Yahoo so far!!  Re: Nords' composting and buying things from Craigslist/Goodwill, one commenter has this to say:

"Nordman, I hate to say it, but you are very miserable from the inside and self-centered, even when you have to recycle junk around the house for consumable goods. To me, buying things on Craigslist and Goodwill is bottomless #$%$! It's junk that you really don't need. Most Americans would rather buy new or affordable goods at big box retail stores when the products are on sale, or put money into practical investments such as a new tablet or flat screen TV in their homes."

(emphasis added).  LOL!!!!!!!!

[the awfulness]

Wow.  Just wow.  On so many levels.  I'll start by saying that I generally dislike people who begin rants with "I hate to say it" when they're clearly deriving a great deal of pleasure from saying whatever it is they're saying.  The contents are so over-the-top absurd that it reads almost like a joke post, but you know it isn't.

Aside: Good to know my smartwatch is a practical investment.  I'll sell that sucker for MILLIONS down the road.  MILLIONS, I tell you!

How is it that Nords hasn't posted in this thread?
I've been very busy posting to the Yahoo! Finance comments.  And my blog's comments.  And answering e-mails.  And Facebook comments.  And Linkedin.  And offers for a radio show and guest posts.  And dealing with a couple of very creepy Facebook friends requests from the Philippines.

I just heard from a couple of high-school classmates (Franklin Regional in Murrysville, PA, 1978).  I'll know that this post has truly gone viral when my daughter checks in from her ship in Spain with a "Dad, WTF?!?" query...

Six weeks ago Jaime Tardy of EventualMillionaire.com asked for volunteers who'd become millionaires without winning the lottery or buying the Google IPO.  She arranged an intro to a Yahoo producer who handed me off to their interview team.  The experience was terrible-- Skype problems meant that I could only hear audio while staring at a "Yahoo! Studios" logo on my iPad.  We had to fiddle with the lighting for a while.  Then I had to explain topics to faceless production staff who knew very little about military pensions and active duty and Navy Reserve and savings rates and tracking your spending and frugality vs deprivation, and just about every time I finished an answer there'd be an audio or a video problem.  The interview went on for over an hour (and was later edited down to about 100 seconds).  I knew Yahoo was interviewing a group but we never interacted with each other, just the production staff.  At the end the asst producer pretty much said "K thanks bye!" and I didn't hear from anyone for a month.  There was no fact-checking.  I never heard from the producer.  I figured I didn't make the cut.

Then Tuesday night the producer e-mailed that the post would go live on Wednesday.  The next morning I awoke to Varsity's PM (thanks!) and saw all the comments.  I also noted that Yahoo! had spelled my name wrong ("Nordsman") in the video and the transcript, but to the producer's credit she quickly fixed this after I e-mailed her.

We've all seen the comments on MMM's Yahoo! Finance interview and his Washington Post article.  I knew what was going to happen.  I've been posting to Internet forums for over a decade, and I know how to handle those issues.  I decided to engage where I could clarify, and then I found out that Yahoo let me post links in the comments.  So I've been explaining the military benefits and the retirement system and the costs of raising a kid, and linking to my blog posts on those topics.  This is an amazing opportunity to post comments (and backlinks) to one of the world's top websites.  Thank you Yahoo!

Now I'm beginning to realize that a bot (or some poor intern) is going back through my comments and cleaning up the links.  But the video is pushing 1400 comments on Yahoo (I'm only about 50 of them) and I've had plenty of traffic click through the links that I got in.  Unique visits on The-Military-Guide.com were up over 6x on Wednesday, and pageviews were also up to 2.5 per visitor.  That means people were clicking through several posts (not just the homepage) and I've received a lot of "Contact me" and e-mail through the blog as well as through social media.  All very good blogger indicators.

The producer said that she was pitching the video for their homepage, and she asked if I had any good photos.  I'm really glad I bought the photos from the USAA photographer, so I was able to give her another half-dozen surfing photos.  Maybe that helped, but the video went on the Yahoo.com "front page" this morning (along with 99 other videos).  So today is going to set an even bigger record on unique visitors-- at least 8x-- and more reader feedback.

It'll be interesting to see if this spikes book sales as well.  (My publisher doesn't track it real-time so I get partial data each week from Amazon.)  It's certainly attracted the interest of new military readers.

Next month I'm joining a live radio (Internet) broadcast with MachoSpouse.com, a site for male military spouses.  (The founder is the Air Force's Military Spouse of the Year.)  I've scored a guest post on another blog, and of course I'm happy to show up for more podcasts and videos and guest posts.

An overnight success after nearly four years of blogging...

The best part of this is that I'll have more advice & stories from military readers that I can feed back through the blog (for months) as well as more book material.  And the buyer of The-Military-Guide.com will soon be making another large donation to Wounded Warrior Project.

Are you interested in doing an interview?  Yahoo! is still looking for more "Average Joe" millionaires, and if they're reading their comments then I'm pretty sure they're going to be seeking "Average Joe" early retirees (under a million).  Jaime Tardy is always interested in interviewing "eventual millionaires".  If you're another blogger and you want to pitch a major blogger or media outlet, let me know and I'll do what I can.  I'm only going to be holding this magic wand for a few more days before the Internet's attention span moves on to something else...

How is it that Nords hasn't posted in this thread?
He's out surfing.
The real tragedy of this week is that the surf has truly sucked-- 1-3 feet or less.  (#HawaiiProblems.)  I have high hopes for next Monday morning...

I do have to agree with some of the commenters that people earning over $100,000 are not average though.  It would be good if someone wrote an article about someone who became a millionaire with an average income of 50K.

Yep.  I think Yahoo had a tough time getting volunteers willing to share their data.  I've had plenty of readers who have shared their numbers anonymously (or privately) but I don't think they'd be happy to have 1700 Yahoos commenting on their finances.

Us! Us! Okay not quite. We've been married almost 23 years, 10 of those I didn't work, and my dh's salary was 50-65k.  We'll hit 900k next month, and 1m next year saving 75k a year due to OT, but alas it's not all liquid. That will take a little longer.
