Might be buying a used Prius
« on: October 29, 2014, 11:03:02 AM »
I have a ridiculous commute and my car is very luxurious.  I might be throwing a mustache bomb today and buying a 2010 Prius with 124k miles.

Do any of you have one and how long does the battery last?  What other concerns should I have about this particular car?

My daughter and my wife both drive a Prius, 2007 and 2009 respectively.  No real issues with either at ~95k miles.  They have an outstanding reliability record in general.  One of the magazines tested a ~200k mile one and it performed on par with a new one with regard to mileage and battery.  If you end up needing a battery at some future point they are readily available in both used and re-manufactured variants.

BTW, I am a car guy, and love fast cars.  No matter.  The Prius is absolutely my favorite daily use car ever at this point.  Super frugal, reliable, and so roomy that you can fit bikes, lumber, furniture, and large dogs in the back.  Sometimes concurrently!  My daughter drove back home yesterday with an 80 lb. Doberman and a dresser in the back of hers.   :-)

We have a 2005 and 2007. I did have a 2010 but hated how it drove compared to the 2007 so sold it and got the 2005. I personally would look for a Gen II 2005-2009 model. My .02

Went from a 1992 explorer with 520,000 miles on it to a 2007 prius with 95,000. Bought it from eBay for $7500. Feels like I'm driving a spaceship now!!

If you are unsure of maintenace,  consider during the 75k and 100k schedules on them (replacing pvc valve, coolant,  etc).

You don't say where you are, but if you live in CA, the battery (and other parts of the emissions control system) is warrantied for 10 years or 150,000 miles.

That's one of the most reliable vehicles you can purchase.  Still, it has 124,000 miles so give it a very thorough look-over as its condition will be completely dictated by previous owners.

The battery should last you a good long while, so don't worry too much about that because the fuel savings will more than make up for it.  When the time comes though, don't go running to Toyota for a replacement unless you insist upon paying more money.  Small shops have sprung up across the country that exist to recondition old batteries and install them.  The last I checked the going rate for this route was $1000 versus the ~$4000 Toyota would charge you.

go for it,
they are phenomenally reliable
Owners seem to treat them gently as well, which can only help!
Pal has one with 200k+ miles, original batt, zero issues.

That seems very high mileage for the year.

That being said, I bought a used Prius and like it a lot.

Thanks all.  I did it.
I traded a 2002 Lexus for a 2010 Prius.

Normally got 22 mpg on the Lexus and today I averaged 57 mpg on my 17 mile commute into work.

I work in the same town as MMM.  Hoping Colorado gives a discount on registration for having a green vehicle.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
