Meeting Mark Cuban Today - Question Ideas?
« on: December 02, 2014, 09:07:21 AM »
I had the good fortune of being invited to an event where I will have a chance to chat with Mark Cuban later today.

Does anybody have any ideas for good questions or topics to discuss with him?

I will be sure to report back after the event, thanks!

How about these:

1)  Pretend you're back to being a "regular person", would you work for free to get experience in something you know little about but think has a great future, and would your answer change if you had a family where you were the only source of income?

2)  What do you believe are the 2-3 best sources of credit/funding for new businesses in the current economic environment, besides the Shark Tank?

He's big on sensor technology.  See if he'll open up about his vision and what he sees the near term market for this tech is/will be.

Ask him if he has considered living on a shoestring budget so he can quit working, retire and do some blogging.

If Cuban used a 4% withdraw rate on the $2.7 billion net worth listed on Wikipedia, he could spend $108 million per year. I'm pretty sure he knows he doesn't need to work for money.

Cuban gave a fascinating talk...

Here are some of his more interesting points:

1) He says if he was a young person today, he would study Biology, Math and Computer Science.

2) Following those lines, he believes the "next big thing" is personalized medicine. He went on a long tirade against our current system of one size fits all medicine and how the only distinctions between individuals is how many milligrams to take of the same pill. He says he has his blood drawn quarterly to act as a baseline that he can compare to if he ever has a medical problem. He believes the highest capability of the internet will be monitoring health and allowing doctors to work/observe remotely.

3) He says that sales is the most important skill a person can have and advocates anybody starting their career gets a job that requires them to sell. He says if you can sell, you will have a job forever.

4) Strongly against net neutrality. He says any counter argument is one based in misinformation. He thinks that there is a consumer demand and need for "fast lanes" in the internet, but there will always be enough bandwidth.

5) Pro Obama-care. Cuban is generally a libertarian but he says once we as a country decided that everyone is entitled to healthcare (ie. hospitals can't turn emergency patients away) that we all need to buy in to universal healthcare as a right and the government needs to regulate it. He compared it to taxpayers funding homeland security because we don't want to walk around worried about terrorists.

6) Indiana U should not fire Tom Crean.

7) Shark Tank films one deal at a time, it's not multiple contestants in a day. He said good deals take a few hours of recording and are then edited down to 10 minutes. Cuban and the other investors have the opportunity for due diligence and can pull out of the deal after the fact.

8) He requires weekly status reports on all his companies. He demands that bad news be listed first, because "they don't need my help with the good news"

9) He doesn't take meetings or phone calls, only communicates by email.

10) He will go to a meeting if you're writing him a big enough check. And he will wear whatever the person writing the check is wearing, be it a suit or speedo.

11) He wanted to buy the Cubs for cash, but required a face to face meeting with Sam Zell to negotiate price. Zell wouldn't take the meeting.

Overall Cuban was an awesome guy and great presenter. Really inspirational listening to him today.

Thanks for the update. Mark Cuban comes across as a real smart guy on Shark Tank and your summary of this talk confirms it.

Love Cuban on Shark Tank!

You might ask him why he is on Shark Tank, given that the deals are so small relative to his daily income of 300K.  Seems the folks on there are trying to get image time more than make money on deals?

I assume he delegates his roles in the companies he buys into.  Seems like he is all fun and games and very little work at this point in life.  Pretty much retired.

From what I've seen he kinda consults. He's incredibly sharp and I'm sure just having him on board opens doors.

From a Feb. 2014 blog post of his: "Selling is the most important job at a team.

Everyone majors in sports marketing. There is no more worthless major.  Every school seems to have a major in sports management .  Why do the schools and kids think that across the tens of thousands of graduates from these programs there is going to be a job than even comes close to paying off their student loans. Do the math.

Lets say there are 120 top pro teams.  This article says there are about 12k sports marketing grads each year.  The competition for jobs at pro teams is so brutal that we don’t have to pay much. Yet schools keep signing up kids. If schools want to have any value to sports teams they should offer degrees in Sales.  Not sports sales. Just sales.  Teach kids to sell and they can get jobs anywhere anytime.  Teach kids sports management and you improve their chances of getting a job at Fridays."

Amen.

And tell him after he does to fire that clown Trestman and that Chicken Cutlet doesn't deserve to be paid like a top 5 QB.
