Medicaid Discrimination?
« on: August 23, 2021, 01:35:17 PM »
We are most likely going to be leaving our employer provided healthcare coverage next year.  My understanding is that our conversion income will be low enough that our child will have to enroll in Medicaid and not be eligible for the ACA.
I was curious if anyone moved their health insurance to the ACA but had to put the children on Medicaid.

Have you faced healthcare discrimination because of the Medicaid?
Are you treated differently at healthcare facilities?
Have you had trouble finding doctors that accept Medicaid?

I know we have a very negative view of Medicaid in this country and was curious to hear others experiences.

Following. I'm hoping to be in the same situation in a few months. I toyed with moving to an expansion state so I could get adults on Medicaid too, but the silver ACA with CSRs seems just as good and has a little bit higher income threshold.

I have family who have been on Medicaid (both adults and children): no issues with medical as far as discrimination or being able to find doctors.  Even the big schmancy places here take in-state Medicaid.  Theirs ostensibly had dental coverage too, but there were hardly any dentists in the state who took it and those had long waiting list. This might vary by state. Other forum members who are on Medicaid seem to really like it. The one issue I would have with it would be lack of coverage when traveling out of state, although that is an increasing problem with ACA plans too.

That negative view might vary by region/political affiliation (I've heard some comments working in healthcare but never seen anyone actually treat someone differently because of it. I've also heard racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. comments over the years from the same type of people).

My family used Medicaid for a long time.

There are some providers who don't accept it but there are plenty who do and I personally never noticed any bad attitudes. Medicaid may pay slightly less than private insurance but it's a very reliable payer.

I have no direct experience with CHIP, but have heard it is great coverage.  In my state you sign up for a Managed Care Org, each plan has its own Provider list.  Most states also have MCOs and no longer use Fee-For-Service Medicaid.

I have been in regular Medicaid and Providers haven't treated me any differently, except for no bills.  Same docs I had at work are in the plan.

I am in WA state. My family is low income and when we applied for ACA way back when we were automatically bumped to medicaid (for both children and adults). We have been on Medicaid since, in two different cities, and the care has been excellent -- better than anything I had on employer insurance back in the day.

Just like any insurance, it comes down to choosing the right providers. In WA state, at least, we have always had plenty of choices of whom to see. We have never been discriminated against. I'd go so far as to say the opposite. Medical providers know they will get paid as long as their service is on the list without quibbling with a private insurance company. Our GP is excellent, we've had two wonderful pediatricians, mental and physical therapy, and even an ambulance ride and couple of emergency room visits and the quality of care was always excellent. Dental care was great. In fact, my adult son ages out of children's Medicaid in a few weeks when he turns 21. In May it was discovered that he needed a major dental surgery (wisdom tooth growing into his sinus cavity). After it was determined that he won't qualify for adult Medicaid and his workplace benefits don't begin until he graduates and goes on fulltime contract in January, the dental surgeon moved things around so that the surgeries (yep, two) and after care visits would all fall within the Medicaid coverage period.

I helped enroll a friend of mine and her daughter in Medicaid several years ago. The coverage seemed fine and neither had a problem with doctor and dentist visits. There are probably less doctor choices than private insurance but she was happy with the care she received.
