Lost an earring down the shower drain
« on: November 30, 2014, 08:42:13 PM »
At least that's what appears to have happened even though it would have taken a low probability shot as drain was covered and water turned off immediately but, as we all know, if that's where it can go, that's where it will go.

Any ideas on how to get it back or if it's a lost cause?

Shower is on a concrete slab.  Pulling the drain cover, I can see down it about 10" and see some standing water.  Earring post is NOT magnetic. I shoved a hangar down the drain with some two way tape on it but only pulled up things that should remain in the drain pipe.

It depends on how valuable the earring is...  If it is valuable, a plumber can put a flexible camera through your plumbing to try to find it.  You'd probably want to stop running water down the drain until said plumber arrives.

I used a shop vac once to suck a beloved Lego piece out of the bath tub drain. Not sure if it's safe for the drain, but it worked. Make sure the canister is empty though, because you'll end up with water and drain gunk to sift through.

There is a u-necked watertrap pipe down there, just like under a sink. If you can get underneath it (basement, crawlspace?) you can unscrew it, and dump it out into a bucket to retrieve your earring.

I've successfully used vacuums also...  Good call.   You can wrap a pair of hosiery around the hose to keep it from going into the cannister/bag.
