Livingafi: what happened?
« on: April 28, 2025, 10:07:51 AM »
I just finished reading the Livingafi blog last week and went to refresh the website and found the website/blog no longer exists? Does anyone know what happened? Livingafi has been one of my favorite blogs and I was hoping to recommend it to some people. I hope he is doing well!

The Internet Archive Wayback Machine has backup versions still available -

I also liked LivingAFI a lot, but from what I remember, the author only posted once since 2016.

He clearly no longer had the desire to update. I'm not surprised he stopped paying for hosting.

This sort of reminds me of the "lacking ambition" blog from years ago. It was updated pretty regularly for a while, then wasn't updated for years, then disappeared off the internet.

It makes sense. If you're frugal and you aren't updating your financial blog anymore, and the blog isn't monetized, then why bother paying hosting fees?

Thanks for the link to the archive, Livingafi is one of the iconic blogs.

It's a bit upsetting the blog is gone, but I had a feeling it would happen eventually.

Because of that, I copied all the Job Experience series of posts into word documents and pdf printed them back in 2020.

I have 12 pdf's, one of each post, some are up to 30 pages long with all the fantastic little comics he had in there. Was planning on doing the other post series but never got around to it.

Just started doing this from the internet archive with the I could quit posts and all the pics have gone :/

It's nice that the Way Back Machine has a mostly intact copy, though I suppose that won't be easy to find for folks that don't know about the blog. LivingAFI was probably my favorite and I'm sad to see it go away even if the author no longer posted. At last post it sounded like his life is now radically different than when he first stopped working but it was still a really cool capsule of someone going through the whole evolution of working, retiring, etc.

Maybe it's just me because I'm FIREd now but it doesn't seem like there are as many examples of folks anymore. I know the blog medium is not popular anymore. Maybe people are all on video medium now.

It is a shame to see the blog go. I can understand because he had few significant updates in nearly a decade, and hosting a site costs money, but this was a classic and one of my favorites when it was updating regularly. I wish the author luck in whatever the next journey of his life looks like.

LivingAFI's blog gave me the perspective to leave a very not good work situation (I messaged him after to let him know and thank him).  Good that the blog is available in some form, great read and resource.  Hopefully he and his family are happy and well.

The LivingAFI blog was by far my favorite while I was going through the final few years of my working career.  He wrote in a way that made me feel like I knew him.  His blog was such a lifeline when I was dealing with awful crap during a bad few months of an otherwise pretty good career that I have a permanent fond place in my heart for him.  I really hope he's doing well!  He feels like a friend I lost track of, even though we never met.

Does anyone know who he is IRL? Or is he on this forum?

It would be nice if he could see all the great things people are saying.

Same. It's a great blog and his posts were always insightful.

Was he the one who wrote the article about "The forgotten employee" who was "living the american dream" or something?

I really want to re-read that story, if someone can find it...

Edit:  Found it.  I don't know if he wrote this or not, but it reminded me of his blog...

He does have an account here, I think: @Dr. Doom

I love internet archives.

I was a huge Brave New Life fan back in the day which also disappeared but was able to re-read earlier this year. I hope he is doing well.

@Baguettestache  I would just start at the beginning and read from there! His writing is fantastic, and he really develops his personality with each subsequent post.
