Living in a RV, is it worth it?
« on: May 21, 2018, 10:44:29 PM »
What are your thoughts about trying to live in an RV especially with kids.

What are the pros and cons and any tips on how to try it (what kind of RV to buy etc)

There's lots of info online and some past threads here.  Some members here do it and enjoy it, at least without kids.  lol

It can be done with kids, but personally I wouldn't do it.  No privacy and nowhere to escape for awhile would drive me insane.

It depends.

Are you interested in moving from resort to resort, settling for a season, boondocking?

How much time does the family spend together now? Are the kids onboard or being dragged into it?

What is the plan for schooling?

If you’re thinking about it enough you could spend some time laying out more information on your plans, what you’ve researched so far, etc. I’ve done it for 4+ years and could write more than anyone would ever read. Without any information, probably half of it wouldn’t even be useful to you.

We lived in our 27 ft with 4 dogs and 2 people for a month and that was long enough for me.  Also you can not be comfortable in either extreme heat or cold.

Also, are you talking pre or post FIRE?  I once did 6 months in a VW camper whilst working full time, through a British winter.  I do not recommend it.  Post FIRE, however, as a way of travelling / seeing more of the world and avoiding climatic extremes I would definitely be up for it.

I lived out of a camper on my truck for almost a year, and it was the best year of my life.  If your chosen activities align with RV life great.  If not, well, it will suck.  I was chasing the seasons to go rock climbing and backpacking along the west coast, which aligned pretty well.

Issues:
1)  In the city you have a target on your back.  Unless you have a home base to safely dock at pre-planned, finding spots to legally stay outside of RV parks can be the pits.  It has gotten worse in the years since my trip, so expect to be hassled by cops now and then if you are poaching spots to stop.
2)  RV's are mobile, but not suited to daily driving.  Once you've setup camp, getting back on the road for groceries or trips into town can suck.
3)  RV's get smaller in the rain.  Cabin fever is real about just a couple days of rain/cold/snow/etc.
4)  Bigger RV's have fewer spots in campgrounds to stay at, and it feels like it is harder and harder to find open spaces in decent yet affordable campsites even with an RV.  Spontaneity is becoming a lost cause.
5)  Many national parks and such have 1-2 week stay limits these days.  Having to move every week or two burns a lot of money in gas/miles that can negate expected savings.

Mrs. Rocker is an RVer.  She seems pretty happy about it.  There was some discussion about that in this recent thread:

So... the thing about RVs is that they have wheels. ;)  If you're trying to RV in the extreme heat or extreme cold, you need to be going north or south until that's not a problem. :p

There are plenty of blogs that discuss this concept, though.  Just do some reading.  It's not for everyone, and I'm not convinced it's that much cheaper than a low cost of living area, but you certainly can resolve wanderlust!

It's great if it's what you're into, as is living on boats.  But it's not a low-cost lifestyle!

A few years back I rented an RV and took my children along with my MIL, for a tour of the western National Parks. It was fun, cozy and a lot of work for me. No way in hell would I do it permanently. If this is something you're truly interested in, as opposed to simply casting about for cheap lifestyles (which is what I suspect you're doing, looking at your posts) I'd suggest renting one and seeing how it works.

I like creature comforts and stability too much.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
