Liquid/ soft diet suggestions?
« on: May 01, 2014, 12:12:45 PM »
Following dental surgery, I am restricted to a liquid (3 days) then soft (10 days) diet of lukewarm food that is supposed to be high protein. I welcome suggestions for healthy meals, especially non-dairy and low sugar.  ( I might as well lose a couple pounds while I'm at it). Thanks!

Somehow this makes me think of my favorite soft foods:  mashed potatoes with butter, mashed potatoes with gravy, mashed potatoes with cheese and sour cream and, finally, ice cream.

I realize this isn't helpful but I'm sure others will have more practical ideas.

Lentil soup is good for high protein and soft.

I went through dental surgery twice but unfortunately dairy products were my friend...will try to help anyhow...

I remember eating smoothies, pureed soups, yogurt (you could get the non-dairy kinds), pasta (I splurged on fancy mac and cheese but there are plenty of non-dairy recipes), risotto, oatmeal,  pudding (I bet chia seed pudding would be good for protein and you can limit the sugar). Cooked fruit like compotes and applesauce is pretty soft. Most crockpot meals like stew and curry are pretty soft when finished, especially if you do something vegetarian.

Dental surgery is also a great opportunity to watch terrible movies while hopped up on painkillers. Makes the vampires extra-sparkly!

They aren't low-sugar, but I liked bottled protein smoothies (Naked, Odwalla, Bolthouse Farms, dunno what's available in your area)--many places you can get a large bottle; I also got some fruit ones. My bf was around for the first 2 days and made me garlic mashed potatoes..but those weren't high protein), but after that I was on my own and didn't think I would be willing to cook (I was right).  If you have someone helping out (or are more energetic/determined than I was), you could DIY the smoothies with protein powder; just don't use a straw!  I also had yogurt, soup, applesauce, and pudding around.  I was anticipating not wanting to eat at all for a few days, so I wasn't worrying much about the sugar content; more about enticing myself to eat.

After 4 days I was craving meat like crazy, so I had lasagna-flavored hamburger helper--if that's too junky something like (non-spicy) chili or refried beans might do the trick? I hate beans, so that wasn't under consideration for me.

Eggs will be your friend. Scrambled, or whatever. If you spend the money for pasteurized eggs, it will be safe to eat them raw, like in eggnogs, or to add protein to smoothies. Meats may work for you if you chop them up as fine as you can (or use a meat grinder, if you have access to one) and then stir gravy in to get them nice and mushy.Chopped "hamburger" meat will probably work without needing grinding, but you will probably need gravy.  You can make egg salad and tuna salad, mashing the ingredients with enough mayo so you can handle the consistency. (Keep your different foods separate on the plate--don't mush it all together into one blob just because it's all soft or pureed. You want your meal to be appetizing--not like oobleck!) Some desserts lend themselves very well (not low sugar, but I'm on a roll now). You can mash up cheesecake and it's great, and a nice change from ice cream, custard, sherbet, pudding, and jello. Another good food on this diet is hummus. Yum.

Juice carrots.  Can even add apples but I like the taste of carrots by itself.

After my fairly major jaw surgery, I had my wife stop at Wendy's for chili on the way home. I was HUNGRY.  Yes, the experience sucked. Yes, I pretty much just swallowed it without chewing.

Cottage cheese is a good high-protein, soft choice. I prefer full fat, large curd.

I've seen a few recipes lately that used pureed white beans in place of heavy cream to make a "creamy" soup. You could try a creamy veggie soup made like that (with small, well softened veggie pieces).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
