LED bulbs for under $1 at CostCos in Quebec
« on: October 26, 2014, 04:12:16 PM »
putting this out there for the half-dozen or so peeps here that are in Quebec

Went into CostCo today and was shocked that they had Luminous A19 and G10 LED bulbs on sale for $7.49 each *plus* a $7 instant rebate courtesy of Hydro-Quebec.  Limit 5.  Was a bit incredulous that I'd have to fill out and mail some proof of ownership but it was all automatic at the registry.  Never used Luminous before but I replaced three bulbs and I like 'em.  Cheapest I've ever seen by far, and with the basic CostCo return policy (basically infinite).

Anyway, not sure if it applies elsewhere in Canada but thought I'd share

There is a $5 coupon for Ontario too... Wife got a few at Dollarama for about $3 each I think. Sameish deal at Costco in ON.

Limit 5! In stores now! While stock lasts!!

(And they are SO much better than CFLs - instant on, no mercury, turning off/on doesn't hurt them - shorten lifespan).

We bought two to try them out and really like them. We'll go back for more this week.

Thanks for the heads-up.  I will be at a Costco sometime this week, I will look for them.

I've enjoyed living here except for the months of November and April.  Those two months suck.  Oh, damn... November is coming up.... ahhhhhhhh!

Is the color warmth 3500K? If so, anybody use them with dimmers?

I got a few GU10 base at RONA for a similar price. I really like the color and the width of the beam (they are halogen replacement) but the dimming sucks. They are listed as being dimmable but they stroboscope when I play with the slider.

Also, the price is actually 7.49$ plus 15% tax minus 7$ instant rebate. So they are closer to 2$ each. Still great though :P

Wow, where are you? Autumn is nice - crisp and clear - and April? It's "oh God, thank God, the end is in sight!" for me - near Ottawa.

Well, usually October is great (except this year), nice and crisp, and November gets dark and gloomy.  April, oh yes, we can see spring in the distance.  Time to start tomatoes indoors.

To get back on topic, I will report Ontario (Ottawa) prices once I have been to Costco.

Quebec.  For us October is wonderful with beautiful fall colors, crisp airs and plenty of apples, squash and other fall veggies.
By November there's no leaves on the trees, it's getting dark very early, there's no snow to go skiing on but the constant freeze-thaw means ice everywhere. Citrus is still expensive and fresh produce is really limited (or very expensive). It's too early for the pretty xmas lights (although they start to go up anyway) and Canada has its thanksgiving in October, so ther isn't even that to look forward to.  The ground is frozen and ice forms on the ponds - but it's not thick enough to go skating on.
April is too early for things to flower - ski season is over but there's still enough piled-up dirty snow everywhere to make things look awful.  It's "mud season".

From what I understand (and I AM NO EXPERT!!!  I have barely dabbled in LEDs, but I have a buddy that sells this stuff) ...  There is a lot more science than "just put it on a dimmer."  There are multiple types of dimmers out there and you may have to actually match bulb and dimmer.   Some of them require an extra wire and bleed off excess power to neutral.

When I complained about dimming, my friend pointed me to this tool.

Caveat: yeah, it's just not that big a deal to me.  I haven't actually done much to match bulbs/dimmers.

Where in Qc?

I'm from the UK, so it really doesn't get dark for me here.

I miss daffodils in February :-(

Does anybody have a good line on cheap LED bulbs for those of us who don't live in Quebecistan?

I prefer the term Quebexico myself...  sorry, no line on cheap LEDs.  Home Depot periodically puts the Crees on sale for 6.97, but apparently not right now.

Ebay. Ridiculously cheap LED bulbs. Very questionable quality control, though. Free shipping from china means you can buy a couple for a couple bucks, try em out, and junk em if you're not a fan.

LEDs are in fact way more complex than incandescent. They're semiconductor devices, and manufacturing them is almost an art and very much a science, high-tech science at that. Because of their operating theory, dimming and color temperature and dispersion is much more complex. (Dimming generally wants a PWM signal of at least several hundred Hz, preferably a few KHz, unlike the 60hz your wall gives you. Color is very process-dependent. And they are directional just in the way incandescent is not, so you need some combination of reflectors, bulb shape and LED layout, and glass over the LEDs to get the dispersion right.) They also need the right heat dissipation - they generate less power than an incandescent bulb, but being semiconductor devices (and often used in conjunction with other solid-state devices like regulator and microcontroller ICs, and mounted on PCBs) the whole assembly is somewhat heat-sensitive, and so is the solder used. So cheap bulbs will tend to die quickly because they heat up and don't have the proper heatsinks or housings to direct heat away. Fun. Then comes the question of color; white light is really just blue, and we're more used to white light coming from yellowish sources, so even if you think it's pure white your eyes / brain might disagree after a while of using it. Two-tone bulbs using both white and yellow that allow you to regulate each tone individually solve that problem in a superb manner, satisfying the most complainy of the complainypants.

I also tend to think that rail lighting is far superior than lighting that attempts to be more ambient, if that makes sense. There, the directionality and color is more of a benefit and cheaper bulbs can be used.

Cree lights tend to be great, among quite a few others.

Maintenant, le ville du Québec!  Votre capitale nationale!  but  at times I live on the lower northshore.

Funny you mentioned the UK not getting dark.  Even London is further north than 90% of the population of Canada - it doesn't get as cold there because the Atlantic current feeds warm water from the Gulf stream.  However, in December you have less daylight than Montreal,  Toronto, or even Vancouver.
The daffodils in Feb are because your ground isn't frozen, unlike ours which pretty much freezes around Halloween and un-freezes around mid April.

I've gotten a stash of cree bulbs from Home Depot here in MA for $5.50 / bulb.  Usually they are $9, but it seems like they run that special at least a couple time a year.  So far they are performing great, even outside.

Sorry - I'm FROM the UK, but I live near Ottawa :) I meant that the UK does get dark, compared to here. When I lived in Scotland, oh man, light at 9:30 or 10, and starting to get dark again at 15:30 or so. I can't imagine living in the real north.

I have been informed via PM that these colorful names for the Canadian province of Quebec are racist and derogatory.  I sincerely apologize to the lovely people of Quebec for any harm I may have caused to their provincial brand.

I, too, apologise.  My comment was made tongue-in-cheek, and I hope I did not offend any of my neighbors here in Quebec.  Excusez-moi!

Mine definitely have no discernible sound.  Sounds (ha!) like you may have a bum batch 'o bulbs.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
