Our last two trips to the theatre were to see the Hobbit movies in 3D at xmas time. We don't really buy gifts for each other so it's a gift outing for the two of us. We did enjoy them.

And year before last we went to a local historic theatre where we don't mind paying $5 each to see a movie. We've seen It's a Wonderful Life many times on tv but it was really fun to watch it from the balcony seats of the old theatre. We even bought popcorn for that one.

Movies are still pretty cheap here- $6 as a student. I do bring in my own food sometimes. Ethically I'm not saying I'm Mother Teresa, but my perspective is this: Even if I didn't bring in my own food, I'm still not going to buy their $5 drinks and $10 popcorn so they're not actually losing anything.

It's been that way for years.   Don't take it out on some poor high school kid that's making 8 bucks an hour.

Agreed.

I only go to the movies a few times a year and I bring my own concessions - usually just a box of candy and a bottled water.

Just have to plan better.  The wife and I love tv/movies but we just mostly stay 6 months behind and hit up redbox/netflix.  If we want to see it in the big screen its always tuesday's because every ticket is 5$.  Of course we don't get snacks there.

My teenage daughter wanted to see a current film at the local cinema so on Sunday I took the family out to see the film.   $7.50 a head for a ticket, a bit high, but about what I

FWIW, it was suggested by my X-wife that we sneak our own snacks into the theatre, but the cinema has rules where you are prohibited from
doing this and I thought it would be setting a bad example for the kids.

Lessoned learned, but it will never happen again.

I think it would be setting a good example for the kids to sneak food in.

Teaches them to not to submit to authority and be independent.

Counterpoint:

For many films, seeing them on the big screen has no substitute. Expensive junk food is what is required in order to maintain the infrastructure needed for that experience. At least you have the option to purchase. Would you rather ticket prices were $30 each?

We usually see a few films each year, and most of the time spend too much money on overpriced snacks. It's bothersome while paying, but I get over it soon enough when I'm snuggled in my stadium seat next to my son and wife while we watch Magneto rip a baseball stadium from its foundation using only his mind. In the grand scheme of things, it's too little money to get bent out of shape about.

We went to the movies occasionally when we were kids.  NEVER got snacks at the concession stand though.  We just didn't.
