Lacking Ambition?
« on: August 18, 2014, 07:27:45 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've been lurking here for a while and never had anything to add to the discussions, but have learned a great deal from you all. Thanks so much! Another one of my favorite sites is "Lacking Ambition". Does anyone know whats happening with him? He hasn't posted anything for several months, and now the website is down.

Thanks,

truck-nine

Yeah, I also noticed his site was no longer registered. I really enjoyed reading his occasional essays.

He seemed like a fascinating guy. Maybe he said everything he had to say, or he was getting too popular.

Hope all is well with him. He definitely followed a different drummer, I found him very inspiring.

This is the best I have:

Does anyone own a few acres, or less, miles from where they live - for recreation or just for the hell of it?

Like.. you can buy an acre of land in Arizona for $1k or something. Somewhere to escape to in the middle of the Canadian winter with an RV, or build a little cabin, or... I don't know.

Sounds like a terrible idea? Probably it *is* a terrible idea. Just wondering if anyone on here has done it, and if so what they do on it...

Lots of people talk about it, or dream about it (this thread has plenty of evidence of that), but it's rare enough that when it happens, it's worth sharing.

Here's Lacking Ambition's post on doing exactly that (archive.org, as site is dead):
https://web.archive.org/web/20140627182220/http://lackingambition.com/?p=423

He ended up going back and getting a law degree and becoming FI in just a few years through real estate, but that post always inspires me.

The guy who ran that site has always been a sort of personal person. He's been really quiet on posting the last couple of years and probably let the site slide. Your best bet is web archives. I agree it's a loss. That man has some awesome content on that site.

I agree it was great content.  The Mad Fientist did a good podcast interview with the guy, available here:

I noticed that his site is down as well.  It's too bad for us fans of his as Mike is an inspiring guy and his blog was such a great combinatjon of frugality,  philosophy, and real estate rehabbing in a high COL area.  His stories had a very personal feel that I have not seen replicated on any other FI blogs.  He once wrote that lackingambition was originally just meant as a diary to get his thoughts down and he was surprised so many people read it.  Perhaps he decided that it was time to move his diary offline.

As aircooled said I hope he's ok.

Maybe the title of his blog says it all. ;-)

I think I checked it out once or twice when someone posted a link to it. I remember liking it. I wish it was still up so that I could read more about him.

So glad I saw this thread. I loved the Lacking Ambition blog and was gutted to see it had disappeared a couple of weeks ago. I had read through his entire back catalogue of posts last Christmas and was wishing I had archived some. Really happy to see it is online again.

Lacking Ambition is, in my opinion, the best FI blog of all time. He lives out the ethos of financial independence better than just about anyone. It’s hilarious, and perfectly eponysterical, that he just stopped posting and didn’t bother to explain why he was leaving. Blog is still up last I checked, for anyone who has not read him before.

Also my favorite FI blog of all time.

I like his alternative path to FI (wasn't a software developer who just bought a lot of index funds). Have read through his archive multiple times & still google "Mike Bos" quarterly to see if anything pops up.

Hmm, I just get a 403 error, thus the thread bump.

I just started reading from the beginning thanks to this thread and it's working fine for me.

I don't yet know where the blog will end up, but I haven't often seen one that starts the FI journey this far towards the beginning, so that should be interesting. Usually FI bloggers seem to start blogging when they're almost or already FI.

Odd. It is working on my cell; not on my home computer (which routes through the cell anyways for internet).

Thanks for confirming it was working so I could visit on a different device.

Yep! Though I'm not sure he's completely gone...

Either way, I do greatly enjoy when people hit FIRE and go off and live their life, rather than those who FIRE (if they're there) and then try to monetize it.

It's nice to see that you're a man of your principles.  Although you'd have to actually post on your blog to have a shot at monetization.  lol

I've been enjoying your blog instead!

I sent Ali an article from it last week; she enjoyed it and was like "Who is that? Do I know him"? (From the various Mustachians we've met in travels and Camp Mustaches and stuff.)

Thought maybe he went back to work ;-).

A full time job would be much less strenuous than two children. I might have time to engage in the forums again, if that were the case! :D

That's nice of you to say.  Maybe one of these days we can meet up out on the road.  Somewhere exotic, of course.  I'm open to suggestions.  :)

Thanks for pointing that out! I've been wanting a new FIRE + travel blog to read. Hopefully @Eric's blog will be terribly unsuccessful, but he'll keep blogging so he doesn't turn into another highly monetized professional blogger with a stash he doesn't live off of :-)

@Eric , what is your blog if you don't mind me asking?

@Harry Hannah  It's right below in my signature.  www.BonusNachos.com  Just getting started with it (January was my first full month) so don't expect too much yet.  :)  But my wife and I are retiring in April and then we'll pare down all of our belongings to a couple of backpacks to start traveling indefinitely.
