Jimmy Johns Bicycle delivery?
« on: September 19, 2015, 08:41:21 AM »
Anyone do any kinda bicycle delivery work, or would you consider it?   I watched videos of the Jimmy johns guys and they seem to be pretty unsafe in order to get places faster.  Maybe just the ones with bike mounted go pros drive like that...

The ones here in downtown Charlotte are certifiably insane when I see them out and about.  But sure enough they're always here 10 minutes after I hang up the phone.

Delivery bicycle requires a significant amount of insanity. But, you learn to read traffic incredibly well and know what you can get away with.

They all ride like that. :) Speed is money.

My dream job!  I'm probably glamorizing it, but it's the job I want after FIRE.  Ride bike, get paid, don't care if I get paid much, and deliver sandwiches to people stuck in the office.

Cycling often looks unsafe to people who don't do it, but as you get faster/more experienced, you do start to read traffic better.  I would think the difficulty for those guys would be dealing with sidewalks and pedestrians, which are a lot less predictable.  I'd be curious to hear from someone who works there though.

You mean a bike courier? Was a big thing before email and offices needed their documents fast. It used to be a solid job. With the "gig" economy it's probably a less stable option now.
I never considered it, not because it's unsafe but my friends who did it said there were a surprising amount of "office" politics.
