It's official, I'm retired
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:38:22 PM »
As of today I am truly retired at 63.

For those of you getting close, it is a lot of work.  I am cleaning out my office (so many books!!!). I just got my pension statement - I have to decide whether I want the pension (after three years it is pretty tiny) or put the money into a LIRA (that way I get my employer's contributions, no way I am just taking the cash and leaving that behind) and if I do the LIRA do I want to turn it into a LIF?  I have one more year of helping my daughter with university expenses, and there are things I want to do which will take a bit of money.  I have cut way back on my cell phone plan, and once I see my use patterns it may get cut back another level (the lowest). I have changed my car insurance to reflect the lower mileage I expect to drive.  I have to get new health insurance, so right now I am comparison shopping over the internet and phone.  Now that I am no longer staying in Ottawa at all, I have checked and can get a non-resident's library membership for $50/year - that is a bargain, I have taken out so many books it would have cost a fortune this past year if I had bought them (second hand, if I could have even found them).

Upside - everyone I know who is retired tells me that in a year from now I will be complaining that I should have done it sooner.

Downside - I am going to miss my students and colleagues big time.

I am exhausted  ;-)

Congrats!  What an accomplishment.  Keep us informed on how the transition to the other side goes. Very interested in the after(work)-life.

Congratulations! But I'm curious -- comparing costs for health insurance? In Canada? I thought Canadians just had their provincial plans?

I have learned a lot in the past few days, I never had to work at this before  ;-)

Yes we have basic health insurance.  But it doesn't cover prescriptions drugs.  It doesn't cover "extras" like physiotherapy.  It doesn't do dental at all, at least not in Ontario (and Quebec except for young children).  And ambulances. And, and, and.  So basically public health coverage (which is not free, we all pay for it in our taxes) will keep you basically healthy, but the next step up in coverage is up to us.  I had health coverage at work, now I have to make my own arrangements.  But there are lots of options.  I can go with my previous insurer now that I am retired, my old teachers' union has a group plan for retired members.  I can go with my present insurer within 31 days.  I can go with plans my university alumni organizations have set up (interestingly they are all the same, same company, lots of choices as to coverage, and that is also for alumni who are self-employed).  I can go with Costco, they have insurance plans for members.

They are not as expensive as they would be in the US, but then the basic are already coming out of my taxes, so I have less after-tax money to pay for them - it all evens out.

Plus I want a bit of life insurance, just to make it easy for my executors to look after immediate bills.  That will be cheap, female non-smoker rates are low.

Congratulations! I'm a bit worried about the office clean-out myself. I may do what some of my colleagues have done and leave it all out in the hallway for students to pick over. You probably have that option, too, once you get your favorites out.

@Rural

I left lots of books in the student resource room - they should find good homes.  My shred pile is less than two feet high.  I changed jobs three years ago, the last office clean out was much worse.  The contents of 6 file cabinet drawers went to shredding and huge stacks of books went to the lab to be picked over.

@smedleyb

Why the long wait?  I was ready to retire from my last teaching post when this contract job came up - I went from College to University, "a change is as good as a rest" worked for me.  This one I was sorry to leave, but the contract ended. Plus money, I separated 4 years ago and the financial settlements are still not done, I still have a chunk of equity sitting in the matrimonial home.  My assets look better on paper than in reality.  Fortunately I was the frugal partner, so I should be fine on my pension, especially once my daughter has graduated and her financial support ends. And for those wondering "why support her?", she has a part-time job and is an honours double major, so I am happy to take some financial stress off her and give her time for school.

"First day of retirement" plans - finalize insurance, go finish the office and lab clear-out (had to give back a nice microscope to Earth Sciences yesterday, that was hard (I offer a good home to homeless dissecting mikes)), and tutor daughter in stats for tomorrow morning's final exam.

Thanks for the info re: supplemental insurance in Canada. Fascinating that one possibility for purchasing it is via Costco!

You sound like someone who has a lot to offer and many ways to be engaged and useful in retirement. Enjoy your freedom!!
