Interesting all the computer science and library degrees on this thread.  I've got the CSC degree, but work in a library, and keep wondering if I should pursue the library one.

rubybeth -- cool. :) Haha, part of the reason I'm interested in frugality is because I've picked a career path that I know I'll love, but that will probably never pay the big bucks. I would rather not need the big bucks than have to work in a career that I don't like!

So, now I'm curious: how much do you expect to make as a librarian? Will you be looking for jobs across the US, or limited to a specific geography? Feel free to PM me if you don't want this thread being hijacked! :)

I'm curious about pay, too, since we are such a small library there's not much to go on.  I kind of fell into the library job, and worked my way up as staffing changed.  I can see future changes down the road, and wonder how things will play out.  I've been watching jobs that are posted within our system, curious about details, but pay is often not mentioned.  One listing was detailed, and I was surprised that it was very close to my position/pay/duties, but required the degree I lack.  For part-time!
I'm also always a bit curious about what I don't know I don't know, w/o the degree.  But can't quite justify the expense for no gain in pay.

Well, I've been crawling job listings in my area for a while now, and I am expecting my first job with "librarian" in the title to pay around 60k.

It's an expensive area so salaries are higher here, but so far my fiance and I are staying in the black as students, so I think it will all turn out fine. I also just got a (better) 2nd job that pays $16/hr so I'm pretty pumped about that as well.

That sounds great!
Unfortunately, pay is lower here.  Our director makes $30k.  I think our entire payroll budget is $55k.

Removed my previous post at the request of the OP. The OP's expected salary is in an expensive area, whereas I was looking for librarian jobs in the midwest. While $60k may sound high, it's based on cost of living in the area. For example, compare with a cost of living calculator Washington DC with someplace like Green Bay, Wisconsin or Des Moines, Iowa, and you'll discover that a $40k salary in those places is equivalent to a $60k salary in DC:

For a point of reference, my starting salary goal was a minimum of $40k annually, and I started in a position that paid $45k and it has gone up from there. :)

I'm in my third semester of a Master's in Aerospace Engineering.  I'm doing it online while working full time and my employer pays full tuition and a small stipend for books.  Spending so much time on school makes me a little less frugal in a way because I'm more willing to pay for services to save a little time.

Working first let me get my student loans from undergrad paid off and establish some experience in my field, not to mention the benefit of finding an employer that will cover tuition.  The downside is that I am probably leaving and will have to pay back all the tuition at once out of my last paycheck or two.  Being Mustachian lets me do this with no ill effect-- I have plenty saved up to cover this and more.
