Intuit buys Credit Karma
« on: February 25, 2020, 07:01:11 AM »
So, just confirmed today: https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/24/intuit-credit-karma/amp/

Seems to me this has to be the beginning of the end of any free services from Credit Karma, and it makes Intuit even more of a giant on personal finance and, not so incidentally, in how much personal data they have on large numbers of people. I don't see any real upside for consumers here, but would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I guess turbo tax did not like losing revenue to credit karma so they bought them. I expect they will gobble up any other free services to eliminate them as well. For most tax payers, the IRS knows exactly what you owe and could send you a post card with your taxes calculated.

I didn't realize Credit Karma was also doing taxes now.

I guess switching over to credit karma for taxes this year may have been short sighted.

Here's to hoping that the acquisition is blocked by regulators.

Intuit sold Quicken. Mint is going to pot. I got the feeling Intuit was getting out of the personal finance space. So acquiring CreditKarma seems like a new direction.

I didn't realize Credit Karma was also doing taxes now.

Just started last year, I had to file my state at a different time because they didn't have all the states set up at the time.  This year it was easy to do both though.

I did not know that. So I googled it. The article I read (several years old) includes this quote: ""Quicken is a desktop-centric business and it doesn't strengthen the small business or tax ecosystems," said chief executive Brad Smith in a conference call with Wall Street last year."

They forgot one thing: there is actually still a class of consumers who PREFER the desktop, non-cloud interface. Idiots.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
