Childs bike seat
« on: May 24, 2016, 03:46:45 PM »
I have a 1.5 year old (25 lbs) who I want to ride on my bike. Any recs for a solid simple seat? Preferably something with room to grow.

I went with a trailer, and DD is fine with that.  I had originally wanted the kangaroo seat (the kid's in front of you) but never got one, and like I said we've just used the trailer.  Plenty of room for growth, and it's a multi-tasker.

I've had a Yepp Maxi for my 3 year old since she was 1.5. It's still in like new shape, we use it daily and leave the bike outside in harsh weather during the day. It has no padding in the seat so nothing to get soaked in the rain but the seat is still comfortable. She'll probably be able to use it for another two or three years (48 lbs max weight - she's an average sized kid but I don't think we'll end up using the seat until she's at the weight limit).

Cons: expensive ($200?)

Pros: resale since its not even worn yet.

They also make a Yepp Mini which goes in front of you, but that will only work until 3 or so as it has a lower weight limit.

I use the iBert and can envision my daughter outgrowing it at around 4 years of age.

For what it's worth, I once had a very enlightening conversation with another parent at a playground (he saw me ride up with my daughter on my bike).

He said that he had a similar setup (with the carrier in front) and one day when he tried to put his son into it, he had grown too big and couldn't fit.

He said he suddenly felt really sad that he would never be able to have his kid ride in front with him, never be able to talk to him in the same way while riding, or point out the different things they could see while riding together.

He ultimately switched to a trailer, but told me that it was never the same.

I have not reached that point yet, but I know exactly what he means.

This is a good point. I had a front carrier for a couple of months - Kangaroo? (I wouldn't recommend it as it was rattly and certainly wouldn't have lasted me years like this one has). But the rear carrier still allows plenty of conversation. Although most of what I get out of my not-a-morning-person child is "Mommy, I don't want to talk right now." :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
