I can't tell you how often I get my work done at 3 pm and then just have to wait around until 5 pm because I'm committed to being at my job until 5 pm. I'm able to say now that the biggest reason I want to be FI is because I want to advocate for my own hours (whether through self-employment or not) without the fear of losing said job or at least pissing off co-workers. At my office, it isn't kosher to ask for flexible hours unless you have kids. Since I don't, I really don't have a reason to request them other than "I can normally do my job in 5 hours, not 7-8." And I'm just very efficient, most people in my position couldn't do the job in 5 hours.

I agree with this. Not because I am the most efficient person in my office though...I am going to be working 6h a day next year and, although I am grateful that I can work these hours, in the back of my mind, I am annoyed that I will be losing money on my paycheque, yet probably getting the same amount of work done as I did when I worked 8h a day....
If only they could give you a stack of work, and if you get it done in 6h, you get to go home. If it takes you 8h, then it takes you 8h.....
