Cut flowers. I get it they are pretty and can make someone feel good, but they die so fast. Potted flowers FTW

Ugh, I hate when someone gives me potted flowers. Like, thanks for the added daily responsibility?

To eta's list, I'll add anything that comes from QVC, HSN or the like. Why anyone buys overpriced crap advertised on endless infomercials is beyond me. I know it's crap, because I see boxes and boxes of it at estate sales. Maybe it's also lethal.

LOL!  Best comment ever!

@englishteacheralex if you have a Buy Nothing group where you live, you could offer opened cleaning supplies there. I've seen stuff like that offered in my group and it usually gets taken.

It is indeed. I've never been sent a pile of potted plants though, so that would be a new level of weird.

I don't know about that, I bought high quality Egyptian cotton sheets from HSN 16 yrs ago and they are still in great shape. I only wish I could find the same to repurchase a second set. (Hard to find color) I've tried several since from other places, some even at a higher thread count, and I have not been impressed. The shopping networks admittedly have some "instant garbage" like any other store . . . but a bit of what they offer may still be worthwhile.

Any article of clothing I have ever purchased at H&M.  I'm still salty about how I bought a couple of professional work shirts almost 8 years ago, and both immediately shrank/shredded beyond wearability after the first wash.

I actually worked for a company who sold on HSN. Same stuff, different designs. The guy who had that account made bank.

I was mostly responding because I like estate sales, well, what I actually like is buying quality used stuff I need, not the part where somebody has to die for me to get it. It's when I see piles upon piles of useless of useless crap in the same packaging that I know the decedent was in infomercial shopper and it pisses me off. For lots of reasons.

And...the best set of sheets I ever owned came from an estate sale. I used them until they were threadbare and DH finally stuck his foot through one. I've never seen anything like them since, but the new Kirkland ones Costco is selling are pretty darned nice.

Totally OT, but this is very timely for me--my DH also just put his foot through our sheets, and I'm headed to Costco this afternoon! Thanks, Dicey!

Free stuff charities send trying to guilt me into a donation.

Calendars (I have a very specific one I buy and use), quarter-sized tokens (looking at you, Toys for Tots), Christmas (and other) cards, wrapping paper, books, flimsy magnets, address labels that have the name of my late husband, and more I've probably forgotten about. Note pads are useful but I have enough to last me and a thousand of my closest friends for the rest of my life.

edited to add: I find QVC or HSN useful when buying new cheap Tracfone smartphones. Boils down to getting the phone, a year's service plus data and minutes for less than the price of of a year's service.

I actually emailed one charity that I have made donations to and asked them to take me away from their mailing list. I told them that I liked to support them because I liked their mission but I don’t want to have their letters asking for donations. I prefer to make a donation when it suits me. They replied that they would take me away from their mailing list. I will do the same with other organisations when I receive their letters.

Back when I donated by check, I would put a post-it on the actual check saying to not add me to any mailing lists. It worked well.

Oddly some clothing from H&M I have had for a decade plus that I wear for work!

Same with me.  Today I wore a jean jacket that I got about 18 years ago at H&M.  However, I found out the hard way that H&M kids' leggings are INSTANT GARBAGE.  H&M is a mixed bag.

There's a store here in Europe called Flying Tiger which is like a small chain version of Target.  My kids LOVE this store and I've decided that a lot of their stuff is INSTANT GARBAGE so try to avoid it.  It is good for some things though like reading glasses, food and some stationery like notepads.

A friend of mine used to call this stuff "STDs", for "straight to dumpster".

In general, anything "free" is going to tie up space and resources in my house. Unless it's something I went asking for (like, on a neighborhood website or something).

Argh, this is something I really despise.  The frugal angel on one shoulder says "but it has value!" while the realist angel on the other shoulder says "this isn't adding value to YOU."

Not instant garbage, but produce an absolute MASSIVE amount of it.

It defies the laws of physics. It just shows up out of thin air! They bring it home all the damn time! School, friends houses, grandmas, any store ever etc. Go to the library, boom instant garbage! Stop by the grocery store BOOM instant garbage. Eat at a restaurant, you guessed it, instant garbage!  Even stuff that is not instant garage quickly spreads out to become instant garbage. Usually a strong correlation between the number of pieces and the time it takes to become garbage.

To be fair we are moving and going thru their rooms has been a horror movie. Love the clip BTW. A really good way to thing about consumption/life.

+1 to this. Grandparents, school, birthday parties, art projects, swag, it never ends. And every single gd item is aBsOlUtElY PrEcIoUs and must be kept FOREVER. Or until they fall asleep or have a sleepover somewhere else, then it's trash bag time. I resent the tidal wave of crap that is threatening to overwhelm the house.

Seasonal decorations. They drop 90% of value the day after the holiday. And it ends up in a huge plastic tub in your garage or in a spare bedroom and house it for months. By the next time the appropriate season rolls around, you've forgotten what you've already purchased or where you stowed it, basement shelf? Or you're traveling and won't bother this year. If it does make it through the season it's bent out of shape from sitting in the front yard. Not worth any of the hassle.

I like to have my kids make the decorations for our house. At least its a creative activity for them, and the art has more meaning.

This period will pass and then they'll be teenagers and well, its different... Little kids and everything that comes with them are fun in their own way.
