Alternatives To EBAY (besides craigslist)
« on: February 23, 2016, 11:02:18 PM »
Does anyone know of good alternatives to eBay?

The issue I have with eBay is that they charge 10% (something around that) in fees just to sell the crap you got for christmas you don't want. (I now tell any relatives to either donate the gift money for me to charity, or just hand me some cash; I feel this is quite Mustachian) Some would say I shouldn't ask for anything, and I don't, but a lot of my relatives insist, so I tell them donating it or cash would be most appreciated.

Craigslist is my number one go-to, but for more specialized items I am having trouble reaching a broad audience. That is why eBay was helpful as I could reach a larger percentage of the population. But eBay suspended my account "indefinitely". After a month of this, I requested to cancel my account, disconnected eBay from my PayPal entirely, and said goodbye forever to eBay.

Thanks!

Erica

Angie's List though I've never used it

And we have an Auburn Yard Sale where people sell their stuff off of facebook

Apparently you just insert your town then yard sale afterwards and you should be able to find it.

California is hot for this trend on facebook.

They want a photo though, so if you  make up a fake facebook account , ensure it appears real so you will get approved to sell.

I sell on Amazon but that probably won't work for you. Unless you have a brick and morter store, then they restrict many categories.

Their fees are hella reasonable compared to EBAY, I sell on both platforms but LOVE Amazon.

OpenBazaar (https://openbazaar.org/) - It is not active yet, but it has an interesting model for fee-free online P2P commerce using the Bitcoin blockchain to create trust.  It is supposed to give you the trust and distributed network of Ebay with the openness of Craigslist.  It is similar to the black market site Silk Road which was shut down in 2014, but one of the goals is to keep OpenBazaar a "white market."

For clothing/accessories: look for a Buffalo Exchange or similar store in your area, they buy clothing up front instead of consigning where you only get paid if your item sells. Consignment stores are a good second option as well. I have a great one near me that will consign my items for 90 days and if they don't sell, they get donated. Maybe I don't make as much money back, but it is so much easier than eBay or Craigslist.

Ask your friends! Sometimes when I do a cleanout, I make up a list of useful items I no longer want and pass it around to my friends to see if there's anything they want at a steep discount.

I've sold a few things on Nextdoor. It's a little more personal than craigslist since the people are from your neighborhood and seem less likely haggle on prices.

We are in the middle of selling the majority of our stuff and moving into an RV so I've been using eBay, Craigslist, and Nextdoor. ItsDeductible a free online tool is great for determining and tracking the value of just donating. We are getting close to stop trying to sell and just donating the lot.

As said above, Amazon has a free account with minimal fees. Several restricted categories and brands though so depends on what your selling.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
