In Demand Trades in the North East?
« on: November 11, 2019, 08:09:34 AM »
My Partner is currently works in the pest control industry in the Massachusetts and the pay is not very good for the cost of living in the area and he only get one week of vacation that cannot be taken during the busy summer months. My student loans are almost done so we will have more money in the budge to allow him to go back to school to learn some kind of trade.

The problem is he doesn't know what he wants to do. His father is a plumber and he worked with him for a little but didn't care for it. Most of my family sells cars but he is pretty introverted so I'm not sure that would be a good fit. We also have some family who drive trucks but I'm worried with the boom in self driving cars that industry might not be needed 20 years from now but I could be wrong.

He is decently strong but I'm not sure he would want to go into heavy construction like framing or roofing.

He is smart, personable, detail oriented, but directionless.

What are some other options for making a living? We would prefer to stay in this area.

Just Joe

I suggest he consider trades like Machinist, welder or paint/body. Plumbers make a good living too. All of those jobs are detail oriented.

I would echo welder - there are still steelworkers unions. Alternatively, C&C machine operation - which would be nice since it's more mental work, and indoors, plus the machines are used in the manufacture of lots of things.

Plumber (which you mentioned) and electrician (which you didn't) are the first that come to mind for me. Anything with a license like those two will be better paid than those that aren't (carpenter, roofer, etc).

the top paying trades are definitely plumbers and electricians, however you do have to get certificated.
I have close friends in Toronto (a super HCOL area) that make a killing doing appliance repairs and locksmith!
I own a painting company and pay my painters $25-35 per hour depending on skills if your partner has good hands and a quick learner that may be an option but it will take him 2-4 years until he will be good enough to earn that

These are all great ideas. I especially love the locksmith as I wouldn't have thought of that.

I second CNC machine operator based on the information you provided. Depending on your location in the North East, the medical device industry which is strong in this area keeps some high skill manufacturing jobs local. Most jobs require an associates degree.

HVAC. Apply directly to trade unions if he can. Too bad he doesn't want to do plumbing. The union starts them at 55k.

Lots of areas like that don't have enough plumbers or electricians.

I'll echo the previous suggestions of plumber, electrician, and HVAC guy, and throw in the vein of gold of all trades, elevator repairman.  Elevator repair combines lots of skill areas (mechanics, hydraulics, electricity) and a sense of urgency that others don't necessarily, resulting in high salaries and lots of overtime.

Realistically, anything needed to build, maintain, repair, or improve structures is going to be needed. That covers a ton of things - everything from structural engineers to carpenters to painters, etc. Roads, bridges, office buildings, apartment towers, single family homes, cars, boats, etc. And in general, the demographics of "the trades" is older. The US shot itself in the foot with the "everyone has to go to college" thing. And, even if he doesn't like plumbing that much, there's a ton of value in knowing how to do most anything.

The single most competent person I know IS a plumber, electrician, carpenter/framer, roofer, and mechanic (plus army veteran, has done general contracting, historical reenactment, etc). He can pick and choose what he does simply because he can do so much, and there's so much demand.

And he's FI, though he doesn't quite understand the concept of relaxing...

Union electricians can pull in 6 figures pretty easily in NYC and Boston, but overtime is required to do so.  The more work required to become competent, the less competition.  Another option might be something in the medical field such as x-ray tech or similar.
