I consider myself a generous tipper.

I find it extremely irritating though, to tip in advance. It makes no sense!

But... I have to admit something I've noticed in one particular case.  The car wash near my house has a new owner and now I can add the tip on my CC when I pay at the counter, before my car is washed.

Whereas, previously you placed a cash tip (optional and this way they don't really know who is tipping what, if anything) in a clear box while or after they call your name that your car is ready.

I tip the exact same amount in both scenarios, but now that they "see" my tip beforehand, I swear my car is cleaner than it ever was before.

A car wash where others are involved? Consider yourself face punched. I can get on board with a couple minutes with a hose at home or with a few quarters, but more than that deserves a punch.

My last vehicle went its last 14 of 22 years in the midwest being washed three times. Felt moderately obligated to squirt some water on the bed and tailgate to rinse off the blood after hauling harvested deer a few times. No idea if the first owner did much, but doubt it based on our discussions and the dozens of cigarette burns all over the cab.

Well, I honestly wasn't expecting such a rude and hostile response.

We were discussing tipping.

I wasn't asking for advice regarding how I spend my money.

Face punches respectfully declined.

People should be able to spend as they see fit.

A car wash seems to me to be the smallest sin, if one at all. I quite like washing my own car, but I think if it didn't tickle my fancy then a car wash would be a tiny indulgence, if you could even call it that.

If people want to be super stringent on their own choices I can think of a lot more commonplace sins than paying small amounts for convenience.

Uh, you get them regardless. I decline your decline.

Back in day on this site face punches were handed out quite often. It’s partially tongue-in-cheek, but still done as a reminder of the importance of being careful not to become a consumer sucker. It’s far from rude or hostile. If you read older threads you’ll see.

My original join date is a decade earlier than listed. Probably banned originally for too many face punches.

I want to spend my money on fresh human meat obtained via human trafficking.  Defend my choices.

If it becomes possible in the near future to have your own flesh vat grown, that would be ok.

This is the concept of a Me-burger in Project Hail Mary.

That is your right.  Here on MMM we do not judge the ethics of your expenditures, only your extravagance.  Just don’t overpay for your human meat, or it’s face punch time okay?

If I'm standing up when I order and/or if I have to drive to pick it up, I do not tip.  That general rule of thumb serves me well.

This is why I always stand in the finest restaurants to deliver my order, preferably on top of the chair or podium if available

Completely agree with this thread.

I would love to pickup pizza from the local place I can walk to from my house.   Unfortunately the pizza quality is only a little better than Dominos at 2x the price.

On top of that, I deal with the following experience:

- Clunky online or call in order process
- Using the online is $1 more
- I show up and get a bill that includes a 3% credit card surcharge.   I have to specifically say I'm paying with cash to get that removed.
- If I continue with the credit card order, they will still hand me a receipt to sign with *another* spot that I'm supposed to add a tip.

I'd love to support this small business more, but tipping on takeout / counter service and surcharges for me using a form of payment that's better for the business (easier to track, no sticky fingers from employees on cash) is absurd.

Unfortunately in your Starbucks / Chipotle example, it's been employee pressure forcing the tip line, as these employees have other options that do allow for tips on top of base pay.

This is one reason the whole “shop small” movement doesn’t resonate with me.  Do large corporations sometimes use their market power unfairly?  Sure, but that’s not the only reason they outcompete small businesses.  As you observe, many small business are simply poorly run and offer a terrible customer experience.  When I have an issue with a chain store, it’s usually because it’s a locally owned franchise with the owner/manager working trying to cut costs by counting how many napkins I’ve used.

Interesting insights into your pattern of behavior.

I work full time as a therapist.  I provide individual and group counseling to adolescents with significant mental health needs.

When I return home from work, I take care of my husband who, due to a near fatal accident, has a permanent spinal cord injury.

I love my two cats, baking bread and taking long walks on the beach.  I call my dad, who lives in Ohio, every day.

This will more than likely be my last interaction with you, tiny, so I'll leave you with this.  You may want to consider that other people are dealing with things that you know nothing about and a little kindness and grace can go a long way.

I hope you enjoy your day.  I am heading out (of my paid off house by the beach) for a walk.

Since I know what whale tastes like, I can cast no stones here. They are practically people, and possibly more virtuous, although who knows what mischief whales get up to when they are down in the depths of the deep blue sea?

Both of you should sell your cars and get on your bikes! Then there are no cars to wash.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
