The lowest tier is absolutely worth it - you can't back up your iOS devices on the default 5GB space that give you. More than that is up top you. I keep all of my 28000 photos in iCloud and find that it works great.

We pay for the cheapest option so that we have 50GB. Then we back up both iPhones to the same account. We typically buy reduced price iTunes gift cards and load them to the account. Then sit back and let that gift card pay the $1.05 per month for a couple years. This way both phones share the photo accounts (DH's pictures show up in my roll and vice versa). And I can download directly from iCloud to our computer when we get too close to the limit.

I pay AU $4.50 a month for the 200GB version which I think is worth it since I use it to back up my whole family's photos, messages etc. I know it'd be cheaper by a little bit for each of us to have separate accounts and then pay for the 50GB tier, but I find it easier to share apps when all using the same account.

I don't bother. Photos are backed up free on Google Photos, no need to save messages (I never go back and read them, they're for quick communication). All my apps are easily backed up with the 5 GB they allow by default.

I don't do it out of principle.  I mean once you start paying for the cloud storage, Apple has you by the balls for life.  The pics are all still on my phone and I can save them to OneDrive for free.

I don't bother. Photos are backed up free on Google Photos

I don't have an iphone but this would be my approach also.
