I put in my notice at work - let's talk lessons learned.
« on: February 27, 2018, 02:07:02 PM »
I put in my notice last week and gave 5 weeks notice before my last day in order to help with the transition of my duties.  I am SEMI Fire and will be working for myself on a part time basis going forward.

With that said, for those of you who transitioned from full time work to unemployment/self employment/etc are there any things you wish you did/didn't do prior to your last day?

For example, some common sense things like do all of your check ups now, doctor/optometrist, etc to use up as much of your benefits as possible.
Use up any employee perks/benefits while you still have the chance.
Renew mortgage, negotiate for best rates while having full time employment, etc

Things along this line, but really it could be anything else that's not money related as well.

I never thought of this. Note to self: Maybe extend FIRE just for the health benefits if the job is easy.

Think about whether to take pay for unused vacation (ca$h), or take the time at the end of your work term (extend health insurance).

Depending on how your company pays for your health insurance, try to quit either close to the beginning of the month or close to the beginning of the payroll cycle.  At my company if I'm there the first of the month my insurance is paid through the month.

This! My job is super chill. If i stay on long enough, I can keep health insurance premiums at the same rate as the day I retire....for life.

I took my vacation payout as cash....  then  realized at the end of the year that I did not get the pension matching $'s, or my own contributions on it, so I could have gotten 5% more matching $'s from employer on that amount..

I could have instead given my mandatory 6 weeks (as outlined in my offer letter) notice for a later end date, and taken several weeks as paid holidays, then work final week.  (The rule was that you have to work your last week, can't take vacation immediately before final day).
