Title: I only sleep in a bed so I can sleep with my wife
Post by: dios.del.sol on September 02, 2017, 11:36:02 AM
It's time for mattress shopping. I was questioning why we even need a bed. I'm quite comfortable sleeping on my inflatable backpacking pad on the floor. And then I realized: I sleep in a bed so I can sleep with my wife. Seems like a good expense to me!

Same for my partner! I know he prefers to sleep on the floor. He actually thinks it's romantic to live in a house with very little furniture, deocration, paint or wallpaper. He'd happily live in a squat. The only reason he lives in a house with an actual bed and paint on the walls is because I want to live like that.

Given a choice I'd prefer to sleep on some minimal padding on the floor.  Beds just seem like a tremendous waste. . . they're less comfortable, and they wear out.  There are few beds I've found that don't give me back pain, which sleeping on the floor has never resulted in.

Having a raised bed off the floor might have been very important when your floors was composed of dirt and was crawling with insects, but they're a vestigial appendage at this point.

Yes, me too. I'd prefer a very small house or just renting, very little decoration or furniture. But my husband is certainly worth having some extra stuff around, and a house that seems crazy big for two people (though isn't bad by north american standards).

We slept on the floor for years and we're actually temporarily on the floor again, but I never know where to leave my glasses. I know that's the stupidest excuse ever, but I can't reach the window sill or the top of the nearest cupboard from the floor and I would bump my head all the time when we put up a small shelf above the matrass for my glasses.

I don't need anything fancy, we live in an 800 square foot 70 year old house, but I do feel happier when we have a lamp instead of a light bulb, proper curtains instead of a sheet, some basic furniture and something on the walls. But then I'm a very domestic person. We don't currently have all the luxury items I listed before :D We've only lived here for two years so we haven't put up curtains or lamps in half of the rooms and we haven't painted or put up wallpaper in the bedroom yet. We're still waiting until someone offers us something for free that we like.

Yeah, I doubt I'd have a bed either if I wasn't married.  So expensive and the floor is just fine...

Back in grad school I slept on a camping mat on the floor, and I had a little wooden box (maybe 12" x 8" x 6") I kept next to my mat that functioned in the same roll an a nightstand (held glasses, wallet, phone).

You guys need to get out there and live some.

Slipping into a nice bed is heaven. With high thread count sheets and comfy pillows.

Spend some of that money you can't take it with you for Pete's sake.

I prefer a floor bed, but some disgusting flooding sold me on keeping the bed. I am raised from the filth like a medieval king

+1 hilarious.

I sleep on a  foam mattress topper that rests on a boxspring, in a normal bed frame. Most of the height of a normal bed, none of the comfort.
I really want a mattress.
One day...

We purchased a 4'' foldable twin foam floor mattress a about a year ago for a relative that stayed with us for a few weeks.  After they left I tried it one night and now I rarely sleep in our raised bed mattress ever since.

I always slept like a baby when camping (I sleep on a 1.5'' pad) and always thought it was because I was exhausted but turns out I like firm surfaces to sleep on.  Never going back to a normal bed mattress on a raised bed.

I can't believe I am the first one to say this among these hardcore purists, but we bought our bed at a 90% discount because the model was discontinued...yes, you heard that right, somebody in this weird society decided that a 100% natural wood bed had to be replaced with a very similar model, but the loading area beneath for sheets etc was painted in another colour. The bed heading went into the firewood bin, and we got two hard mattresses on top of what we use now. The storage space below is neat to have. The rest of the house was furnished with free stuff from our local Craigslist, except for the bathroom (all new) and the kitchen (1990s style already in there when we bought the house). The bed as we got it was cheaper then the price of building material if we had built it ourselves.

Well I'm with you on the nice beds are great thing, but as long as I'm sharing that bed with someone who honestly prefers the floor, we have to meet somewhere in the middle.

Even while we're on the floor I make the bed with nice sheets, pillows and a handmade quilt (from repurposed jeans, gives the quilt a nice weight). During the night he throws out his pillow but he loves the quilts I make.

I have yet to find a bed that is comfortable. Definitely sleep in one because of my DW. Lets not even get into the room temperature all though she has learned to sleep in a much cooler room then 20+ years ago.  I get my best rest in my chair. Never sleep more than 4-5 hrs in our bed or any bed.

Yep, for 3.5 years. It was terrible, and since we were in super low-rent places we were basically waking up eye to eye with vermin. One morning I grabbed my glass of water to take a sip and there was a huge cockroach, dead, floating in it. So, we switched to water bottles with lids. #workaround

But I can see for people who have never had to sleep on the ground/floor how the idea might be appealing in a MMM/against the grain/romantic sort of way. It's probably not so bad if you're in a beautiful home too.

I've run the gamut: thin folding foam mattress on the floor, cheap-ass Goodwill mattress on the floor, actual bed with frame, box springs, & mattress, cushy soft mattress, Tempur-pedic, firmer mattress, etc. When I was younger, I could tolerate sleeping on a mattress on the floor, but it was never comfortable, and getting up in the morning was a bitch. I sleep best on super-soft mattresses -- like floating in a cloud! -- but then I wake up with back pain. Sleeping on a thin foam mattress on the floor wreaked havoc on my joints, both during the night and the next day.

We actually just bought a new mattress, the firmest one I've ever voluntarily purchased. I sleep okay on it, and it doesn't mess up my back, but I can't say it's comfortable or that I sleep deeply on it. It's worth sacrificing quality of sleep for back maintenance. I just wish I didn't have to choose.

Even when I was a kid, though, I could not sleep on a bare floor, or even a carpeted one. That always hurt my joints and head too much.

You need ease up on the judgement.

This forum is getting very strange of late. I come here to find like-minded people. It's feeling more and more like just another douchey internet forum. Reminds me of this thread:

I have noticed so many odd topics.  From the three times daily "the top is in, red dow" to should I buy a new car, to I think I got out too soon.

All of these topics then have many people here saying that the face punch worthy decision is OK.

Has the MMM community gone soft?

I'd never do it with vermin around. That just sucks. It's not a romance thing. I just like it when I do it is all. My body feels great in the morning and I feel rested. Crashing at others' houses, backpacking, I spent a while on a futon mattress on the floor, etc. But yeah, all clean places. I wouldn't call our place beautiful, but it's clean enough.

If there was a significant quantity of vermin crawling around my floor every I wouldn't sleep on the floor.  I'd move.

If I had to remain in vermin house, I'd look into a hammock or something . . . but that seems like it would make sexy time even more complicated.  That said, how much sexy time are you really getting in your roach infested place?

Note of caution that our rental home had floor boards warped and some mold damage from (lease prohibited) on floor bedding.  The foam mattress in one case and a large 'dog bed' in another case, both wicked and held moisture from under the home during rainy season into the room and wood floors, without proper ventilation to allow drying.  Putting bedding directly on the floor or directly against walls is not wise and can lead to expensive repairs for home owners. No problems if you roll up the the bedding and tidy up each day.

This is a legitimate problem . . . particularly if you're using a foam mattress on the floor.  In the past I have damaged laminate this way.  The solution - don't sleep on a mattress.  If you just have a couple blankets under you they will breathe well enough that this never becomes a problem.

Fun fact back in 2010 when my then GF and I bought our home (we got married a few months after that so she was not yet wife) we also bought a brand new king size bed. About a few days after it got delivered I got an email saying they received our return and will be crediting my credit card. Sure enough a couple days later there was a credit on my credit card statement when I checked online for the purchase price of the bed. I figured they will realize the error and correct it (but I sure as heck would not call them to correct it). They never did so basically got a free bed due to some error.

I almost want to add a poll to this thread to see what the age of people posting are. When I was in highschool, my childhood bed was so lumpy I slept on the floor (carpet) instead of the bed because the bed was uncomfortable. In college I slept on a cotton futon on the floor, which for my young body was perfectly comfortable. I'm in my late 40's. A few years ago slept on the ground camping, other than a thin 1" pad and sleeping bag. And it was uncomfortable. Sometimes things that are fine when young, can't do it when get older. And while I don't mind a low bed, I don't want to sleep on the ground.

At the time I was just thinking the bed.  Then I got the bill for her latest set of femaie specific checkups at the doctor's office.  Ouch.  Her yearly basics are easily 5x what mine are!  Good think I didn't do that math before getting married...

I had a 20yr old futon on a bed frame that I found quite comfortable. GF hated it and wanted a new mattress. I don't find it to be that great, but I can sleep pretty much anywhere.

After the first night on the new mattress someone asked me how I liked the new mattress?  My reply was "I'll let you know as soon as my GF gets up and tells me."

DH has a bed and mattress that almost predate me (I'm 11 yrs younger). Plus it's a full size and just barely fits one large and one plus size persons. But he isn't ready to get a new mattress yet.

I'd almost want to try a Japanese style futon, the kind you fold up during the day and lay out at night. But I also don't like getting up off the floor . . . But those cabinet beds that close up, those are pretty cool.

Some of you are absolutely insane.  A wonderfully comfortable bed is one of the great joys in life.  About four years ago we bought a really good mattress for each other as a Christmas gift ... I still crawl in bed at night and think, "Ahhhhh..."  We have a deliciously soft set of flannel sheets, which enhance the experience.

As for a raised bed, yeah, it's a need too.  Once you're out of your 30s, you'll appreciate it more.  Also, a raised bed makes for a good seat in the bedroom, a comfortable place to change a baby's diaper or fold clothes, and it provides for under-bed storage.

Finally, in the grand scheme of things, a bed isn't an expensive proposition.  Yes, a top-quality mattress is expensive up front, but it's not hard to find a good deal, and it lasts for years.

If you are young you can get by with sleeping without a mattress but as you get older your body doesn't allow your to lay as it used to. I know older people go without a mattress all the time and they also complain of back/spin/hip/leg/neck/shoulder problems all the time. I still try to sleep on the couch, I'll probably do it tonight watching tv but my hips will feel the difference tomorrow. A human body rests much better on a comfy mattress. Now to those that are not human.... enjoy the floor......

I'd look into a hammock or something . . . but that seems like it would make sexy time even more complicated.
One person lies on hammock.  The other stands and gives the hammock a gentle push.

Works great for camping at night (I find it to be quieter than that tarpy tent material), I imagine it could also work indoors.

I couldn't afford a cabinet bed, but didn't want to replace my old huge heavy mattress with a new huge heavy mattress after I started having back problems (because it was so old).  Plus, had a perfectly good bedframe (metal and solid wood) that had been handed down from my parents that I saw no reason to get rid of.  Solution--two Japanese-style futon mattresses on top of a box spring!  Works pretty well--still have the occasional neck problem, but no more back problems, and I can fold them up/move them around whenever I need to.  Only issue I had was that the box spring didn't have enough slats across to keep the futon from sagging into the gaps--fixed that with Ikea birch slat supports.  Entire setup is pretty environmentally friendly too, compared to a conventional mattress.

If I'd had access to shop tools, I probably could have built something to convert my existing frame into a platform bed.  But this works pretty well for me--nice and firm, but I don't have to hoist myself off the floor every morning.

This has less to do with age and more to do with your body adapting to the situations that you repeatedly put it in.

Slow your roll their buddy. No one is saying they need their 800 count Egyptian cotton $400 sheets new every 6 months because the fibers just loose their...'feel.' while keeping the AC at 67 because they like the pressure of the heavier comforter and cannot get too hot. That Tempurpedic just cannot hold that shape more than a few months; but hey, you only live once and it is their one 'small' pleasure in life.

What is a decent mattress? $300? every 10 years? so like 8 cents/2 people per night of sleep. not too bad. If this is really bothering you just put a plywood board down for yourself and switch places with wife after her side wears out.

Slipping into a nice bed is heaven. With high thread count sheets and comfy pillows.

Spend some of that money you can't take it with you for Pete's sake.

Tempurpedic bed. That is heaven for us. We are so used to it, when we travel, we always comment how the hotel bed is not comfy - this includes bed in expensive hotels.

If you bought your partner a bed (or your partner bought you one) so that the two of you could pursue your relationship, I could see a way to make the argument.

That's why I finally gave up sleeping on the floor too.

Favorite sleep arrangement me and husband ever had was our so-called "hobo bed". A latex foam mattress topper, right on the floor. Done up with sheets like a bed, but nice and thin and low. We did that the first 3 years we were together. It was a ton of work though. With any flooring, you have to worry about moisture trapping, so I would move and flip it every week (I'm in Oregon, things are damp here over the winter). When you're on hard flooring, motes of dust work their way onto the edges of your sheets (and yes, I swept a ton). Then we lived in an old house with no protection against ants and spiders and centipedes at all, so that sucked. Eventually we gave up and went to a standard mattress. Much lower maintenance for me.

Mainly, I came to the conclusion that just one episode of mattress topper/floor rot would undo any savings, so it wasn't worth the risk. I know quite a few people that's happened to, actually. (College life, holla). And St. Vincent's here does or at least used to recycle inner spring mattresses and redo the upholstery. A whopping $90 for a like-new mattress. We used that for a few years, until a family member was moving and got rid of their guest room mattress. 10 years old, but barely ever used. Nice and firm. Score.

Anywhoo, for people who do legitimately like mattresses, they don't need to be spendy. For people who like floor sleeping, more power to ya, but be cognizant of the risks/challenges. Personally, it's just one more reason for me to love camping =) I get to be back in my hobo bed.

I'm going to answer with one of my favorite words:  Balance.

Yes, this board is about getting ahead through frugal living; however, we all still need to spend.  The question is, What's reasonable and what's excessive?  I say a good night's sleep is well worth the modest cost of a nice bed and quality sheets.  I said earlier that we bought a mattress for ourselves as a Christmas gift a few years ago; before that, we were sleeping on a hand-me-down mattress that another family member bought used in the late 80s.  I hate to sound like a commercial, but we literally saw an increase in the quality of our sleep, and some aches-and-pains we thought were a result of being in our 40s disappeared.

I cannot support the idea of spending as little as possible on everything at all times no matter what ... partially because it's a bad idea, and partially because I grew up in that family, and it was miserable.  No, the right answer is balance.  Spend modestly, but spend enough to live comfortably.  Do not mistake spending for happiness, but also do not make saving such a priority that you're unhappy today.

Tempurpedic bed. That is heaven for us. We are so used to it, when we travel, we always comment how the hotel bed is not comfy - this includes bed in expensive hotels.

We didn't like the Temperpedic, but -- yeah -- I actually miss my own bed when we travel.  Not enough to stay home or even to whine about it, but my bed is perfect and is genuinely one of the pleasures I enjoy most in life.

Incidentally, for all the poo-pooers of expensive things, Do you realize you can go to a high-end mattress store and buy a returned mattress?  When you buy a mattress, you are allowed to return it within 30 days if you're not happy with it ... and they sell those returns for 25-30% of the original high price.  (They, however, are not returnable.)

The primary reason for a bed may be the raised platform.  As I get older, and especially  DH, an easy swing out of bed to stand up is worth a lot.  As in, camping with a cot, and now he is asking for a chair to take backpacking...

A raised platform is likely a lot cheaper than a mattress.  Just be sure to put a pallet (bamboo mat or something) that you can switch out for hygiene every season.

We got a super-nice, practically brand-new bed (complete with mattress, box-spring, sheets, duvet, etc.) for $0 when a friend moved and had to give it away.

We sleep the sleep of the righteous!

Before that, we slept on an old mattress, placed directly on the floor. Gotta say, the bed is a lot better.

I sleep on a relatively comfortable cot,  twice a week, for work. I highly prefer a bed.  Although when I was in Africa earlier this summer, for a month I slept on solid concrete with just a pillow underneath my knees and a pillow underneath my head/neck. It was actually quite comfortable. I did have a mattress, but it was too hot.  Luckily I have a little junk in my trunk, so having padding on those three points, my legs, bottom, and head/neck, that's all I needed. Still, I prefer a bed.

Have you spent significant time sleeping on the floor?  Because yeah . . . mattresses suck.  It's possible that some extremely high end mattresses are as nice as sleeping on the floor, but the crappy mattress you were sleeping on that gave you problems was certainly worse than the floor.

While I'd agree that a good night's sleep is worth a lot, an awful lot of people without significant floor sleeping experience are simply assuming that a mattress is the key to a good night's sleep.

Well of course you need a raised bed. Where else will you store your little gun collection for the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse?

I sleep on.a raise bed but its rock hard. I tent camp a lot so am pretty comfortable sleeping on.the ground. However at home I sleep with my windows and drapes open and like to be even with the window to keep an eye out for zombies...or get a nice breeze

ETA: I like a really hard firm mattress and can't stand a soft one or any kind of topper. The mattress I have is a never used hand me down from my Dads extra bedroom and its so firm it doubles as a weight bench.

Holy crap person-formerly-known-as-spartina... is that your actual bed?  I think I'm in love (with the storage).  Made a bedframe last year with storage drwaers underneath, but it was nothing so ... extensive.

Okay. Okay. I stand properly chastised. I guess I got my panties in a bunch because somehow this topic became about money. I was never arguing for avoiding a bed because sleeping on the floor is cheaper. I was just saying that I like sleeping on the floor, but my wife doesn't, so I don't do it.

I get a kick out of not spending. I also get a kick out of not counting pennies (or dollars) once I decide that something is worth spending on. We decided to buy a bed, looked at some options that were within $200 of each other, and chose the most comfortable one.

Ultimately, to the extent I actually had a point, I suppose that point was that often doing what your spouse wants is more important than doing what you want or saving a few bucks here or there. I suspect you'd agree.

I'm officially on a matrass on the floor, as of today! So far it's certainly not as bad as it sounds.

We've been sleeping on the bad base on the floor for months now (we're getting a different bed) and that feels basically the same as sleeping in a bed, except closer to the floor. My s/o really loves it, I don't really love it that much. So much dust comes from a matrass. When you have a raised bed, the dust falls through the matrass and the bed base on the floor below the bed and you clean there. When you're sleeping on the bed base right on the floor, you have to pull up the matrass to be able to reach the floor below the base and a double matrass is quite heavy. If you don't vacuum often enough, there'll be dust everywhere.

The matrass on the floor is much easier to clean honestly. To preent moisture issues, when we wake up we put the matrass up on its side leaning to the wall. You can easily clean the floor below and I don't really notice the difference between sleeping on the bed base or straight on the floor. It isn't half as bad as I thought it was! I also like the feeling of space in the bedroom during the day.

We'd arranged to pick up a friend's bed, but now I'm not so sure ....

Thanks for the link - and timely too; we need to replace our guest-room mattress, which we sold to our former tenant.
To date the cheapest option we've found was at Ikea - but still about 2x the price of "the internet mattress" listed by the Frugalwoods.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this option. It requires no sheets, no pillows, it never wears out.  The sensations when lying in it can provide continuous reminders of all the money you're saving.

I like that you don't have to worry about moisture build up on the floor from sweat with this model.  A tad concerned that there might be moisture build up from blood though.

Many decades ago I moved into a new place, and had only my backpacking pad to sleep on. This suited me fine, and I slept that way for three months.

Then my birthday rolled around, and two of my employees rolled around with a (second-hand) bed on the roof-rack of their car. They said it just didn't feel right that their boss didn't sleep on a bed. Lol!

There is a Japanese saying, "A Good Bed and a Good Pair of Shoes are Vital, because You are Either in One Or The Other!"

A good sleep is vital for every human for a good day ahead, we spend almost 1500 hr sleeping a month. That means we spend almost nearly one third of their life in bed !

So, I thing it wouldn't be a good decision to sleep in a backpacking pad on the floor for the rest of life.

Air mattresses are fine, but damn they're loud. If either person fidgets at all it's like someone crinkling a chip bag all night long. I also love the occasional waking up to a deflated mess with the accompanying pain. If you both go into straight up Dracula hands crossed over chest lying motionless on your back slumber, then air mattresses are fine.

We got a foam mattress and crazy sturdy bed frame with lots of storage underneath and built in support (no box spring). Now we don't even notice the other one getting up at night other than occasionally if moving the covers wakes us up. We stay on air mattresses at family's house who we visit regularly, and the noise is bearable for a long weekend, but would drive me crazy if it was long term.

There is a Japanese saying, "A Good Bed and a Good Pair of Shoes are Vital, because You are Either in One Or The Other!"

. . . and the Japanese sleep on mats on the floor.

A good sleep is vital for every human for a good day ahead, we spend almost 1500 hr sleeping a month. That means we spend almost nearly one third of their life in bed !

So, I thing it wouldn't be a good decision to sleep in a backpacking pad on the floor for the rest of life.

The average month has 24 * 30 = ~720 hours.

they sleep on futons, on top of tatami floors which are softer than a typical floor. If they do not have a tatami floor, my understanding most have some other way of adding cushioning to the futon, such as an additional layer or even a more regular bed set up.

Given the "I write for" in their signature, I'm thinking some weird spam.

I've been slammed on a lot of tatami in my lifetime.  It's not significantly softer than a carpeted floor (it does absorb impact better though).

But yeah . . . it still seems more like an indictment of a traditional mattress than a pro.  :P

I'm not a badass floor-sleeper, but I long since acquired the habit of sleeping on couches rather than a bed. For various reasons I seem to sleep better that way.

Right now I'm on a western-style "futon" (albeit a very cushy one). I don't bother unfolding the frame --I just sleep on it in couch-mode.

Ironically, I love our bed.  It was expensive (Natural Latex Queen Mattress) and it was the one item we bought when we got married.  We figured we'd spend a great deal of time in the bed so why not have something nice.  ;)

For those who lean a little more to the side of a balanced approach to minimalism/mustachism, a good bed can seriously help your back and keep your energy levels up.  I whole heartily recommend spending the money on something you average 1/3 of your day in.
