I have gone MMM mad!
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:46:44 AM »
I have always been a on again and off again MMM. with boughts of fanciful spending and over the top saving techniques.  I am on again and I can not help myself from seeing the world in terms of dollars and cents.  My kids use a napkin, hey thats 1 cent, they leave a have cup of milk on the counter, hey thats 15 cents.  I cant drive there that would cost me $2.12.  We have more than enough savings to retire today and live comfortably, but my wife will not stop working, so I will live vicariously through all of you ER.

You could stop buying napkins and milk, that would help :)
And get a bike so you can go anywhere free!

If your wife is able to retire, and chooses not to retire, it doesn't change the fact that you are the "FI" part of FIRE. You don't have to live vicariously through us, you are there. And being (and I am assuming that you are) a SAHD, it's just another aspect of living, and I think you'd have a lot to add here. Personally, I'm not in that situation, but I think that there are a fair amount of people here who would benefit from your outlook.

Welcome, and thank you for being here!!!

I sincerely hope that I never get to the point where I feel the need to count napkins.  ;)

It's easy for me to count the napkins in my house:  zero.

I am a bit obsessive about dollars and cents like the OP speaks of.  But I'm glad of it.  It makes me feel more awake and aware.

Don't be that guy...

I'm frugal in some areas...I admit I'm not fully MMM.  If I ever get to the point where I counting the cost of napkins, I'll just recall this blazing episode of my youth.  I was staying at my granduncle's house as my mom looked for housing. I was in the living room with my 2nd cousins when my granduncle came into the room and roared, "Who is using so much toilet paper!?!"...holding the soiled evidence up for reference.

Ugh, my adult 2nd cousin was mortified and told him off.  I was too dumbfounded to laugh.

That is how I started out, and it drove DW insane.  Then someone spouted the "Penny-wise, pound foolish" phrase and reminding me of that really helped calm me down.  As long as we get the big wins, the little ones don't bother me so much anymore.
