I'm Redundant, FIRE here I come!
« on: August 29, 2016, 01:03:13 PM »
Well, its taken a bit longer than I thought, but I have just been made redundant.  It is actually kind of a relief.  I wasn't enjoying my job anyway, just staying that OMY for the extra security of the extra cash in the stash.   Got a decent payout, so we're financially no worse off than if I'd have finished out the OMY.

So now I'm officially FIRE.   Can't believe it really.  Its something that we've worked towards for so long.   But its a bit sudden, so I don't have any plans for my time, or answers ready for those typical "when are you going to get another job / what do you do for a living" type questions.   Guess I've got a whole lot more time to think about the answers now though.

Thanks for all your help and support over the last while.  Its turned what could have been a stressful period into one that I can smile about.

FIRE here I come!!

Congrats Aussiegirl! This is excellent. You may find it a discombobulating adjustment given that it's unplanned, so try not to have expectations of yourself to figure anything out anytime soon - just take some time to decompress and adjust. Maybe come up with a couple go-to pat answers for inquirers (e.g., I've got a few options I'm thinking about - isn't the weather lovely?, I'm taking until the New Year to make a plan, now I have lots of time to be organized for the holidays!). Congrats again and let us know how you're making out :)

Nice!  What's the plan for the next few weeks?  :)

Congratulations! You are free. It's OK to take time to adjust.

Thanks everyone for your kind words - the support this community shows is sensational.

Thanks PtboEliz - it is a bit weird.  Today is my first day off and I'm mentally calling myself a slacker for not doing anything productive.  Spose it will take a while to adjust.   I'm just very thankful that we don't have any financial issues to worry about on top of the stress of suddenly finding myself unemployed.

Nice!  What's the plan for the next few weeks?  :)

I'm not sure to be honest.  My husband is still working (he wants to do a few more years, he likes his job and his co-workers, so if that's what makes him happy.....) so I'll be at a loose end on my lonesome.  Thought I'd do a couple of yoga sessions and maybe see if meditation is all that it's cracked up to be.   Catch up with a few friends, read a book, play with the pooches.  That's about the extent of my plans.   Feels weird even saying that!!    This FIRE might take a bit of getting used to.

Congratulations on the early graduation!  Cleared that original 2018 idea by a mile.  :)

The joy of a redundancy payment and zero work expenses going forward. :))

Nice! And Congrats!! Same thing happened to me so I can relate to the concerns of having it happen suddenly.  But trust me, you'll be fine.  I think its different when it's their decision as opposed to yours.  That being said, it's what you've been striving for and now it's here.  Sit back and soak it all in, the good emotions and disconcerting ones......bottom line - you did it!!!!!  In 6 months you'll be hitting your stride and enjoying your new amazing life.

Oh wow, congrats!!!!

If people ask, tell them you're taking a holiday to think about what you'll pursue next, and then mumble something about freelancing to cover up the lack of work in the future. It's not lying if you mumble it.

Its amazing how many people its happened too, especially in the mining and oil & gas industries here in Oz.  The employment landscape has changed, gone are the days companies felt an obligation to their workers, now they're more than happy to cut when they need to sure up profitability.   I don't know how anyone can get comfortable living without a significant FU stash just in case.

I am looking forward to the point where when I think more about my "amazing new life" and less about the fact they made me redundant.

It's not lying if you mumble it.

Love this!!

Time to tidy up the loose ends today so that I can start next week with nothing to do but relax and enjoy.  If that's not enough to motivate me I don't know what is!

Hi Aussiegirl. Thanks for the kind words regarding my blog. It's great being able to write about all the fun stuff now that we're post FIRE. Get to enjoy doing it and then reliving it when you put "words to paper". Also a great excuse for me to improve on my photography as you can't have a blog without some pretty pics :)
