I'm back! But I'm slacking..
« on: October 11, 2017, 07:27:07 AM »
Hey all! I joined up in the spring and learned a lot just in a couple weeks, I was working a temporary job making 20 an hour living at home. But I needed more independence and have since found a job that I enjoy more, paying 16 an hour while paying 375 in rent (3 other roommates, which is nice for utilities/dish/etc) with 6 month work reviews.

The areas I need to improve -

I need to get rid of DISH, like now. I only keep it to watch my sporting events. The price continues to increase and service gets worse. Problem is - if I drop it next month, I have to pay almost $400 - INSANITY. It's just a hassle.

I need to keep some recipes on hand and put my crock pot to use. So sick of eating lunch out 3 or 4 days a week. Such a waste.

My savings of $300 a month. I need to do a better job of strictly keeping that as an emergency/car repair fund.

I'm still also trying to decide on investment options for retirement. I still need to rollover an existing 401k amount from an old job. On 16 an hour, it's incredibly hard to make a significant commitment to an investment every month.

Do you all have any tips for me that might make these transitions easier? Thanks!

Have you heard of SlingTV?  I just subscribed for this month to watch the MLB playoffs. It's a live stream TV service starting at $20/month and can be cancelled anytime.  I'm buying 1 month for $25 to watch the playoffs, then it goes off again.

I have a few easy slow cooker recipes, if you want, shoot me a PM and I will email them to you. For lunches, you don't even need to cook. Buying groceries for fruit, snacks, and sandwiches works perfectly for preparing lunches.

Don't give up hope.  I make $11/hour; a lot more people are in a similar situation than you think.

I have! And would really like to take advantage of that. I've heard Playstation Vue is great as well. And I also have Netflix.
I just don't know what I'm going to do about these cancellation fees - I don't want to finish out this BS contract I had to sign up for. But in all honestly, it would be cheaper overall to pay the fee instead of paying the monthly bill for 20 more months.

You could always try calling customer support.  With the right person on the phone they might reduce or cancel the fees?  Worth a try, all they can say is no.

Do the math on DISH - example: if it costs $400 to get out of a 3 year contract that you pay $50 per month on, then you would be paying $400 to reduce three year expenses by $1,800.  You may have to pay something to replace DISH, and you can throw that into the equation.  Enduring a 15 minute hassle on the phone and doing a little bit of math can save you bank.  Most Americans can't or won't do this and that is why people pay ridiculous fees for phones and cable.

Eating lunch out 3-4 days per week is totally face-punch worthy.  You do not need crock pot recipes.  You need to exercise your frugality muscles. Teach yourself to find extraneous spending to be ridiculous.  The frugality muscle needs to be exercised at all times so that you can reduce spendy lunches, spendy splurges, spendy gratuitous coffee drinks on the way to work because it is Monday and etc. Best wishes, ap.

Essentially I would pay $400 to get out of the rest of my 20 months, saving a little more than $800 total. It's worth it.

The one struggle with food is that I workout a lot and am trying to gain weight. But now that I think about it more, it would be pretty easy to bring some fruit, nuts, cold sandwich, veggies, etc every day if I set my mind to it. Thanks!

If you're working out a lot and want to gain weight, eating out is the wrong way to do it.  You have no control of the quality or types of ingredients that go into food from a restaurant.  You have no control of the portions.  When you make your own food you can get the carb/fat/protein ratios exactly right for your own needs . . . which makes it easier to gain weight without blowing up your fat levels.
