HSA eligible?
« on: December 14, 2024, 01:39:04 PM »
My daughter is on my health insurance. The insurance is through my work and it has an HSA. I have an HSA with funds. This daughter is in her junior year of dental hygiene school and had to buy these fancy glasses called loupes. They are kind of like a pair of glasses with a lighted mirror contraption to let her see into mouths easily. They are like 2000$ and my question is whether this would be eligible for HSA funding?

I doubt it. They're a tool for her profession, not a medical device necessary for her personal use.

If you have paid out of pocket for $2k worth of medical expenses you can pull $2k out of your HSA. Your provider should have a list of qualifying expenses, there are quite a lot of expenses that qualify.
There are a number of 0% credit cards also, many with sign up bonuses of a few hundred dollars for $2k spend.
Then, pay off over twelve months.

After more research it seems that unless these prescription glasses are prescribes as "medically necessary" I can not use HSA funds for purchasing them. NO great loss, the HSA funds will continue to grow and be spent later in life all while contributing even more. Was just hoping to pay for this medical equipment with before tax money like you would for bandaids or whatever.

Thank you for your time.

That HSA money is worth holding onto (and investing). I've added $8,912.50 to my account this year, taken nothing out, and it's up from $36,149 to $56,299. It's in VITSX and VIGIX.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
