How to Legally Own Another Person
« on: March 25, 2018, 10:15:37 AM »
This article is about 1.5 years old, so please forgive me if my MMM-board-google-fu is lacking and I missed it:

Nassim Taleb talks about the dangers of being an employee - he's got some good points about what we've talked about a lot here, how hedonic adaptation can trap you into being a virtual slave to your employer, etc. He doesn't go so far as to say we should all start our own businesses, or be independent contractors, but he does talk about F-you money and the power of it.

The article rambles a bit, but it seems to fit into the MMM philosophy.  I have a job that could easily enslave me. But my drive to be free far outweighs the perks. Got to pay that retirement account first.

Thinking about employment=slavery is a little chilling, though. I see it all around me. We really have an insane standard of living, much of which is driven by this sort of dynamic.

Curious to read more from that site. thanks for the share.

Good observations in the blog post but no practical recommendations. I mean, we can't all become traders, salespeople and business owners.

About contractors vs employees, to become a successful and well paid contractor, you need marketable skills. The kind of skill set that you can sell as a product. Otherwise being a "wage slave" employee is often a better deal than working a short term contract. Ask me how I know.

My whole company makes more sense now. There were some connections I had not yet made, like why my boss cusses but no one else does.

If you give birth to one, you own it. Poopy nappies and all.

Joke. No need to get on my case.
