I can't tell if this is a serious question, quitting is easy.

1. Write a courteous letter of resignation indicating your last day, future contact information if changing, etc. Give it to    your supervisor.
2. Notify others in the workplace
3. Finish your shit (also known as work)
4. Pack up
5. Leave

Heh. Yeah, DH retired a few months ago. He had no idea either.

HR should be able to give you a timeline and a checklist. Though, be prepared for them to get stuff wrong and ass-backwards. Pay attention and do your due diligence. The HR at DH's place of employment kind of screwed him over on a bunch of crap and gave him a bunch of wrong information. This ended up with him: a) having to scramble at the last minute on health insurance/COBRA stuff because of their inattention; b) getting an extra paycheck, and them having to claw it back, which also meant: c) they had to get authorization to take part of that paycheck back out of his 401(k). It was a real headache that should have been preventable.

Write a letter, schedule a meeting with your boss.  Notify him that it's been a pleasure working at XXX but your last day is going to be August 15th (or whatever), and hand him the letter saying basically the same thing.

In the words of Paul Simon:

Just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I have given notice exactly twice in my career and in both cases, I started by verbally telling my boss.
I was then asked to put it in writing as well in the form of an email.

I printed the form off, I work in a mid sized company. Required fields are Name and last day. I gave 4 weeks notice because I'm nice. Then I handed it to my (soon to be) former boss.

Pre-Quit check list.
Clean your office/locker/space and take home anything that's yours.
Get ready for your phone to be wiped
Get ready for your computer to be taken away
Max out your health/medical expenses and other work benefits

Beyond the "how", here are some tips from my prior experience with quitting:

1.  Avoid giving notice beyond two weeks.  While it seems nice up front, I've had it actually backfire on me several times.  I was trying to be nice and respectful and give extra time to transition.  Instead it turned into a bunch of short-term project dumped into my lap, general awkwardness, and an actual decline in my relationship with my boss and coworkers.  Cutting it off makes the transition quick and painless.

2. Propose a list of transition priorities to your boss.  Don't be afraid to remind co-workers or your boss of the priorities they agreed with. Every single transition I've done got sidetracked with unimportant but urgent projects.  This ended up with several companies not having documentation of what or how things were done.

There was a thread a while back about whether one should give advanced notice or not.  Many early retirees chimed in to say that giving > 1 month's notice actually complicated things and made their remaining time less enjoyable. As examples, employers stopped taking them seriously or ignored them, and/or they were asked to train the new hire (who often was uninterested / didn't want to listen).

Personally, I'd simply notify my employer ~30 days ahead of time (or as my contract dictates) to "pursue other, personal endeavours".  I would not say "retirement" as that invites all sorts of speculation and criticism. Let everyone assume I'm making a life change (I would be) -- most will probably assume I couldn't possibly be retiring and will therefore re-enter the workforce again at some point.  Whatever.  Let them assume what they want, my close friends may know the truth but who cares about everyone else?
