How much is too much for car insurance?
« on: May 03, 2016, 06:07:52 PM »
So I am about to venture into the world of car insurance for the first time. I have been on my mother's policy until now, but we figured out that we can save money by separating the insurances on our cars. Currently, she pays about $800 for six months for the both of us. Separate, I would pay $275 per six months, quote from Geico (so far the lowest for me). I am a 22 year old male which I am sure factors into the rate. I don't drive all the much, 10 mile round trip to work and back right now. Am I overpaying if I go with this quote?

Edit: Also, I forgot to add that this number is with minimum coverage allowed by the state.

Yes - that is ridiculous.

More would go into pricing including your past record, the type of car and applied discounts.

Tell them this is way too much to pay.  Ask your company what discounts are available?  Sometimes you're better off walking into a local agency and meeting someone face to face than just getting an online quote.

I haven't been in any accidents (knock on wood), it's a Hyundai Elantra.

It is not ridiculous for a young man under 25.  When I was 19, I was paying $700/6 months.

With a clean record and discounts for good grades and a defensive driving class, I was paying $185/month for my insurance when I was 18 (late 90s). That was the best I could find.

Car insurance varies a lot by state of residence.  What you pay in one state is different from what you'd pay in another, sometimes by a lot, all other factors equal.

OP -- are you in VA?  These other posts are probably not from VA, so try to compare to others in your area for a real comparison.

I'm not in VA, but I am a 22 y/o male (unmarried) on my own policy.  I pay ~85/month for mine, so your rate looks fine to me.  I had absolutely no credit history when I got my policy, so it'll be coming down soon when I get a better quote/switch insurers.

Your rate sounds reasonable depending on where you're from. As mentioned before, rates can vary from one extreme to another depending on location, driving history, gender, age, credit history, vehicle information, etc.

Don't just take the first offer though; get at least 3-4 additional quotes from reputable companies online. Apples to apples quotes can be done in 2 minutes.

And speaking as a former licensed agent: make sure you understand what "minimum coverage" actually means. You don't want to be too surprised if you only have $25,000 property damage liability, and you crash into someone's $45,000 car. Liability limits can be increased to a reasonable level for (usually) just a few cents, maybe a couple dollars per month.*

*Please consult with a licensed agent for proper advice. I'm just an a-hole on an internet forum.
