How many working days do you have left?
« on: March 10, 2015, 11:18:07 PM »
Unless the markets do something crazy, my proposed FIRE date is still several years away.

But working Monday through Friday means I really only work 10 days per two week pay period.  And I get ten paid holidays per year.  Plus maybe two sick days per year, and maybe 1.5 weeks of vacation.   Averaged out, I figure it's something like 240 days of actual working per year, maybe 700 total working days left.

700 morning commutes.  700 lunch breaks.  700 afternoon trips to the coffee pot.

Until I actually pick a date and file the paperwork, it's a rough estimate at best.  And I'm not sure if 700 days seems like an unbearably large number or an alarmingly small number given all that I would like to accomplish before I throw in the towel.

At the minute I work 200 days a year (gotta be something good about being a teacher!)

I'm 28 and I've got at least 10 years to go.

2000 long days. Perhaps minus 10yr x 2 sick days annually = 1980 days

That's a bummer. Thanks Sol :p

I'm planning to go part time for part of my last 3 years so I'm going to guess about 500 days left!

My current goal is to clear the mortgages, so that's something like 1800 days away if I keep the rate of overpayment as it stands.

728 full-time work days left!!

Then I'll down-shift to per diem & only pick up random shifts I feel like working.
(Or possibly take a few travel assignments to go check out towns around the US that sound interesting while having travel/ apartment/ etc paid for.)

Another school teacher checking in.
This contract has another 230 working days for us.
Maybe we'll do an additional school year (190 days) to fill out the 'stache.
So . . . between 230 and 410 working days . . . with several international trips planned during school breaks.  Sounds like a lovely way to wind down.

I have a retirement countdown spreadsheet that factors in weekends, holidays, and vacation days until my cliff pension vests.  1310 days of work left.

~2928 days. Same assumption as you SOL, 240 days worked per year on average. However FIRE date is set for May 1st 2027, a week prior to my 40th birthday.

244 working days/year, leaving me around 3500 left until target retirement before my 40th birthday in 2029. Ouch. Let's accelerate that!

Me too, but mine has less than 100 days on it now, it also has the pay days, in case I want to take that into account re: last day.
Started the countdown last year to show some baby steps toward the goal. The days will go faster than you think, at least most of the time.

Hopefully only six more full school years of teaching and the rest of this year. Since I rarely/never use the sick days 180x6=1080 plus 58 for 1138 days, but whose counting?

My guesstimate is 450 x 10hr days left.

Probably half until I could FIRE and the other half slowly winding down part-time during my transition phase.

58 paydays left (57 as of friday).
I get paid twice a month and I like the sub 100 number. Plus its then easier to calculate how much more money I'll be stuffing my 401k with.  I'll have to change my contribution rate in 2017 to max out!!

For me it's looking like 1920 days at the ripe old age of 31.  Assuming I don't get any promotions, so most likely significantly less

If I'm able to retire at 50, so in about 20 years, it's only 4400 working days left. Retirement here I come. :)

I made a spreadsheet for my wife and I recently, to actually and try and come up with an FI/RE date.

It's super conservative in some ways (assumes 8% returns on our retirement account assets, 7% returns on taxable accounts, no real change to our savings rates and amounts) and super aggressive in others (we'll be purchasing 4 rental properties as soon as we can afford the down payments for each of them).  So a lot of what happens depends on the numbers that we've put into this monster of a spreadsheet.

However, if it's accurate...I think we're looking at around 700 working days left before we have the option of walking away.  Q1 2018ish, and we'd both be in our early 30s.

1,519 days until retirement eligibility (LEO pension)
1,760 days until my selected retirement date (Jan. 3, 2020 -- the additional 241 days will put me into the year of my 55th birthday thus granting me immediate penalty-free access to my 401k; also, there's annual leave payout implications for this date that potentially let me cash out about $30K worth)

Found this handy calculator, btw:

http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html

WAIT!  You said WORKING DAYS!  1,044 days until eligibility, 1,209 until chosen date.  I like that a lot better!!

12 paid holidays (if holidays fall on a weekend I get a lieu day)
4 weeks vacation
sick days maybe 4/year
every 2nd Friday off

= 200 days/year

estimated 5 more years

1000 more days!

haha!  Yeah, I was working that compressed schedule for every other Friday off for a while, too, but the 9 hour days were too much!  ;-)  Forgot about the 5 weeks vacation, and I average 10-14 "sick" days/year . . . so I guess I have to subtract @ 175-195 days from my calculation!

Yeah I can understand that, but I only work 35 hours/week, so my compressed days are 7.75 hour days (with one day every 2 weeks being 8 hours...technically). with my new job, I have the option of getting every Friday off, but I'd have to work 8.75 hour days.

My spreadsheet says 8.1 yrs so that's 1823 work days.  That's an even more depressing number when expressed in work days instead of years, sigh.   More incentive to keep chipping away at the burn rate.

funny you should ask...  I have a perl script that computes that...

$ ./iday
days left: 114
weeks left: 16.2857142857143
months left: 3.8
2015-07-03 17:00: 16 weeks, 2 days, 05:40
estimated 12.89875 vacation days
This adds up to 68.10125 work days... assuming vacation time base amount is correct

This is why I love computational math - it so often goes to absurd levels of precision.  68.10125 work days = 68  days, 2 hours, 1 minute and 0.1 seconds.
Nice to know you've got your number of working days down to literally a blink of an eye (+/- 30 days with market fluctuations)

It sounds a lot better when you compare it to a 25 year career. Hmm I estimate I have about 1260 work days left. Well if I were to do the typical 25 year career I'd have to work for 5725 days. I'm saving myself 4465 days of work... sweet.

Agreed, great perspective from your early 20's.  The problem is I'm already 20 yrs into that 25 yr career.  Right now I'm out before 50 but even that is still too far away.

482 days...as calculated by my incredibly complicated FIRE spreadsheet.  I love spreadsheets and I play with them in increasingly complex FIRE scenarios when work is boring or soul-sucking.

10 working days, but who's counting!  (ME!)  This is a very timely post for me as I am almost there.  I am looking forward to not having to get up early in the morning anymore.  I will also not have to work every other weekend (healthcare) and holidays!

The funny thing is I actually feel kind of guilty.  My coworkers will all still have to work until 65 or 66 and even though I am 61, most of them keep asking me if I will have enough money to retire early!  Even my dentist asked me why I didn't just want to keep working and would I want to teach instead!  All this is starting to make me feel like a slacker!

Working until 65 or older must be ingrained in most of the population.  This community is definitely composed of outliers.

Working until 65 would be more like 8,000 days for me.  Sol's approximation of 240 days/yr is pretty accurate for me.  I'm not even half way to 65 yet.

About 1000 because of a mandatory commitment (military).

About 380 until I hit my FI number (1MM).

That second half will be interesting when I don't have to play the game anymore...

Based on current numbers, June of 2035 - my 45th birthday. 230ish days/year, roughly 4700 working days away. Shit.

Of course, that assumes I stay at this job for 20 years, without ever getting a raise, while the cost of living never goes up. Never pick up a side income, never get married, and no kids at any point. So the likelihood of it happening exactly like my current calculations: 0%

Thank God. 4700 is a depressing number.

Re: How many working days do you have left?

We've had some prior discussion on creating spreadsheets around this exact question.  The most elegant solution, IMO, was:
=NETWORKDAYS(TODAY(),C1,C9:C128)

(Where C1 in that is my FIRE date and the C9 column it's summing is non-weekend days I have off, such as Spring Break and other days we're planning to take off.)

So if anyone wants to calculate that based on their expected FIRE date, there you go.  :)

To answer the question, 50 working days left for me.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
