How in the Hell?!?
« on: October 29, 2015, 11:10:16 PM »
Does someone rack up 78,000 miles in  under 2 years?
Yeah, we looked at a minivan...2014 with 78 freaking thousand miles on it.  Put into service Dec 2013.

Seriously, what could they be doing to put that many miles on it?  WOW

Business?  "Hot shot" driving where somebody is getting paid to pick up things or people at the nearest big city airport and drive to a remote oilfield, or in your case a remote mining facility?  I have a friend who is a retired paramedic who does this, can easily log 200 miles a day.

You live somewhere a fair distance from work, e.g. in Australia you live in Goulburn or Bredbo and work in Canberra (according to google maps the trip is about an hour and is 90km (55 miles) or 82km (51 miles), A friend of a friend used to live in Bredbo and work in Canberra).

Probably delivery business. If you deliver to outlying areas, then you could easily drive 200 miles a day. 200 * ~250 days a year = 52,000 miles.

Agreed, some sort of income generating driving.

Consumers only put that 7.5k to 20k a year on cars, but businesses that drive, rarely keep a car beyond 3 years.

A friend of mine bought a 5 year old Mercedes off a guy who had had it driven for more than 500000km. He owns his taxi business, and when he is off duty, two other guys drive the car.

Two advantages for the used car buyer:

1) It has no value - everybody's scared by the mileage.
2) Most parts have been replaced at least once. Continous service!

I think it's fair to say you get your money's worth if you've driven a car for 500,000kms.

We play music for a living.

We are 12 years in and have driven 500-550k miles.

For 10 years, we did 30-40k on a mini van and 15-20k on a pickup truck, towing an RV. ($8000 a year in fuel btw)

Now we just drive the pickup about 30k miles a year. Cut down on the people in the band :)

Basically we bought a mini van with 126k miles on it in 2006. 5 years later it had 303k on it. 177,000 miles in 5 years.

It was a huge relief to "only" drive 29,600 miles last year.

Not that hard to do if your job involves driving.  200 miles per day is very conceivable

I bought my '91 back in '96 with 55k miles on it.  Sounded very reasonable at first.  I eventually got carfax for it though.  It sat on a dealer lot for 2 years, then it was driven almost all of those 55k miles in one year, before sitting at various dealer lots before I bought it!

Or a kid in something competitive.  One year I had two major weekends where one weekend was 1100 km and the other was 1500.  Three weeks apart.  The 1500 km one we circumnavigated Lake Ontario (starting in Quebec).
