Title: How do you oatmeal?
Post by: OccamsPhaco on April 26, 2018, 01:39:10 PM
So I figured I'd try out some oatmeal after seeing MMM mention it a few times on the blog, and I've just got to say, I'm a believer now.

Got the cheapest, plainest container I could find just to give it a shot and assumed it would be something terrible to choke down. But damn! Whole milk, crushed walnuts, some honey and it was great. Not only that, but extremely filling for a long time. Been having it either for breakfast or lunch every work day now for a couple of weeks, and I've watched my weight decrease on my weight tracking app after having plateaued for awhile.

So I've got a good cheap and easy food that seems to be pulling a few pounds off of me as well, but I think I could make it tastier. Fruits? Vanilla? Cinnamon? Buying the pre-flavored stuff? Granola?Somebody must have some good oatmeal tips.

I don't sweeten my oatmeal, but obviously the full set of sweeteners are available to you -- maple, molasses, etc.

Cardamom is my favorite oatmeal spice. Cinnamon's nice too, as are any of the warm dessert-y spices (nutmeg, mace, etc).

Dried cherries + coconut flakes. Fresh blueberries. A banana (especially with cinnamon, maybe a little honey if you want some sweet). Really, almost any fruit cut up into chunks. ;)

Peanut butter. PBJ some mornings, hehe. Small pecan or pistachio chunks. I like adding flax seeds or other small nutty seeds sometimes too, for a bit of bite and extra flavor. I don't like big nuts or chunks of granola added in, because I prefer my oatmeal to generally be smoother.

I've done a tiny dash of vanilla before, but it has to be done carefully so you don't overdo it. I've been considering trying a rosewater variant (rosewater, cardamom, pistachio?) but have't done it yet. These types of oatmeals sometimes feel very dessert-y to me -- like a chocolate oatmeal, which an old housemate used to make -- and that can feel off to me for breakfast.

I find that oatmeal is a great place to do flavor experimentation --  if you're wondering if two flavors go together, oatmeal is a great flavor vehicle because it has a mild flavor of its own and it's made in small enough amounts that you can afford to play around.

A small victory for us has been getting the kids on board with oatmeal in the morning instead of cheerios or other crappy cereals.  We do it up with peanut butter, brown sugar and/or honey.  Super simple.

I have mine plain with whole milk. I used to have semi-skimmed which is also good, but my brother agreed to switch to whole (which I also used to get at uni). I am weird and like to cook mine to a very solid consistency as I like the texture better, but I know a lot of people prefer it more creamy.

I eat it every day, except when I'm travelling and they don't have any.

Pinhead oats with a pat of butter, dash of cream, and a healthy pinch of salt. I'll swirl in some maple syrup if I'm feelin' extra fancy.

1.  Banana whipped oats: 1/4 c oats, 1/4 c water, 1/4 milk, 1/2 banana finely chopped, dash salt.  Cook, stirringly constantly, until fluffy.  Add a dash of vanilla and a TBSP of peanut butter (if you are a bigger eater, go 1/3 c each)

2.  Overnight oats: 1/4 c oats, 1/4 c milk, 1/4 c yogurt, tsp chia seeds, sprinkle cinnamon, fruit (bananas, berries, frozen berries, raisins, whatever).  Let sit in fridge overnight.  Stir.  Add in nuts or nut butter in the morning.

3.  Granola.  Oats, cinnamon, chopped nuts, seeds, coconut, mashed banana, olive oil, honey or maple syrup.  Mix it, baked at 300F stirring every 10 minutes until it looks good.

Google refrigerator oatmeal it is super easy and makes a great breakfast.

My wife was vehemently opposed to trying it and said that it would be gross but I made a batch and now she loves it keeps asking me to make more.

I started with this one (doubled the quantity) but have changed it up to many different varieties over time.

https://www.theyummylife.com/recipes/220

Some variations that I have tried that we're a big hit.

Frozen black cherries and a teaspoon of blueberry jelly instead of the blueberries and maple syrup.

Frozen peaches and vanilla

Rasberry and a teaspoon of blueberry jelly

Typically I will setup the jars with the oatmeal, chia seeds on the weekend (10 min) and then every couple of days I will fill a few days worth with the wet ingredients.

Also I do not do well with too much dairy so we use vanilla almond milk

Not only does it taste great it is pretty inexpensive, we buy the oats in bulk and other ingredients based on what is on a special or seasonal.

Cook, stirringly constantly, until fluffy.

See I haven't even broken the bonds of the microwave yet. I guess stovetop will be the next attempt, as it'll give a little more control over things.

Oh, yeah: to clarify the above, the way I eat mine is porridge. Pour rolled oats in dish, pour milk on top of porridge, microwave for around 2 minutes and then a bit more. If you want it runnier/creamier, add more milk.

Oatmeal is cheap, filling, and healthy -- one of those ultimately Mustachian foods. Of course we all came out of the woodwork. :)

And yes, go for the stovetop life sometime! It makes an even tastier oatmeal, imo, and hey... the less you use the microwave, the more you can axe it from your life and sell it on Craigslist. :3

I ought to try stovetop for taste and badassity, instead of being lazy, really. Tbf, whilst porridge is the only thing I use the microwave for, there is absolutely 0% chance I would be able to convince the rest of my family to sell the microwave.

What about reheating leftovers?

I use mine mostly on the weekends to reheat the coffee I forgot to drink 9 times.

Frozen leftovers, while microwave is convenient, can technically be defrosted by leaving them on the side from earlier. But honestly, there are 4 adults living here right now. Most of the time we just cook the right amount of food to start with and don't have any leftovers. It might be more of an issue if I was living alone.

Oh, also mixed into blender drinks. Banana, oatmeal, peanut butter, milk. Basically the same ingredients you would cook it with but blend it up and chug to save time.

I'm all for tastier oatmeal, but.... using the microwave takes 2 minutes with no dirty dishes afterward (except for the bowl itself). That's hard to beat. How long does it take you to cook your oatmeal on the stove?

I bring steel-cut oats to a boil the night before, turn off the heat, cover the pot & shove it to the back of the stove, and go to bed. In the morning I put it back on the burner to warm up, and mix in the goodies, and eat them out of the pot. One dish, and I wasn't going to get away from that anyway :-)

I don't find it burdensome. I guess it takes a couple minutes more than the microwave, but I'm using that time to make coffee and the rest of my breakfast anyway. And they're always perfect.

It ain't elegant, I guess, but neither am I.

One-quarter cup regular rolled oats, one-half cup milk, an ounce of chopped walnuts. Microwave one minute and thirty seconds on high. I eat it with a cup of tea and some protein on the side--usually two tablespoons of peanut butter--just eat it off the spoon. Might have a hard boiled egg with it instead.

It is good made on the stovetop, but too much clean up.

I cook regular or thick-cut rolled oats in water on the stove top.

I can't do sweet breakfast (unless I want a sugar crash after a couple of hours), so I like to mix a bit of butter, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder in the pan, plus about an ounce of shredded sharp cheddar per serving. Steamed broccoli or other leftover veggies are a good mix-in, and I like to add leftover shredded meat or a fried egg on top.

From start to finish, typically around 10-15 minutes; depends on if I do rolled or steel cut oats. While the oatmeal is cooking, I'll do other stuff -- put away dishes, get work stuff ready, feed the cat, cut up a banana, whatever. I do have to clean the pan after, which is vaguely annoying, but I just let it soak in some water and do it with the rest of the day's dishes.

I just realized that I could also just... eat oatmeal out of the pan. I am not opposed to this, hmm.

I should note that stovetop breakfast works really well for me because I prioritize a very non-rushed morning. I cook myself a hot breakfast pretty much every day. If I had to rush out the door within half an hour of waking up, I wouldn't be eating at home at all.

My wife cooks it like no one I have ever seen.
She uses a small shallow fry pan, and cooks it until it is
dry and a slightly browned on one side, turns it over
and cooks the other side until slightly browned.
Then she will put leftovers on top.
The leftovers  could be some type of fish, catfish or
Spanish Mackerel, or pork chop or some beef. She has even
put Spam on her oatmeal.  I have had them all, all are good.

My dh insisted for many years that he hated oatmeal, so the kids and I ate it for winter breakfasts and occasional dinners, and left him out. And then he actually tasted real oatmeal, cooked on the stove with cinnamon and raisins and a little butter and some brown sugar, and now he's first up in the oatmeal line. Turns out his mom only made the microwave stuff.

I am an oatmeal snob. If I am cooking oats any brand will do but with overnight oats Quaker oats are truly amazing. There are different texture/tastes. Since this is a pretty cheap in general I do buy the one I like which is more expensive.
Overnight oats are a game changer and are amazing! Some PB, fruit and soak in milk and YUM!

I am always trying to increase my iron and potassium intake, so I add 1 T. blackstrap molasses to 1.5 C. of Old Fashioned Oats and a 1/4 cup of milk/soymilk.  Then it supplies 50% of my recommended iron amount and 680 mg out of 3500 of potassium.  Score!  Sometimes I eat another T. of molasses while it is cooking, for added benefit.

I use old fashioned oats, cinnamon, teeny amount of brown sugar, vanilla, almonds, and unsweetened applesauce. microwave on high for 8 minutes, stirring every 2, and get

granola!

I freeze it.
Take out a cup, throw some frozen blueberries on top., microwave 1 1/2 minutes. Then, add some vanilla yogurt. Yummy.

Fat is minimal because of the applesauce instead of oil.

Sometimes I make muesli at night, to eat in the morning (oatmeal, yogurt, add fruit in the am)

My husband and kid like it with greek yogurt mixed in, but I prefer vanilla protien powder. Either way, in my opinion the key is to use at least 1/2 milk as the liquid (vs all water) and to use the Rolled Oats, not quick. They take 5-6 min to cook instead of 2 but that gives you time to start the coffee.

Rolled oats soaked overnight in the fridge with Whey protein powder (to avoid casein protein which causes sinus problems for me if consumed everyday). @ minutes in the microwave to warm it up.

Previously I've boiled the oats properly with olive oil and salt. That is quite delicious but doesn't keep me full for as long as the Whey.

I cook my oats on the stovetop, and it takes me less than 2 minutes.  Induction ranges are hella fast at heating up water (I prefer water instead of milk), and after I put the oats and water in the pot and turn it on, I get the bowl from the cabinet and grab a spoon from the drawer, and boom, it's boiling.  I grab the container of sliced almonds and cinnamon, and give the pan a stir, and it's practically done.  I scoop it around once or twice more, spoon it into the bowl, sprinkle the cinnamon, toss a handful of sliced almonds, add in some blueberries (fresh or dried), and drop the pot in the sink.  I fill the pot with water right away, and once I'm done eating, it's one or two swipes and it's clean.  Seriously easy to clean and takes about 10 more seconds than the bowl alone.

Granted, if I'm making more than one serving, it takes another minute to cook, but it's faster than cooking multiple microwave single serving bowls.  But heck, when my kids have decided on oatmeal after I've made my own, I can cook up servings for them super fast, too.  It's super super easy.

Frozen blueberries and cinnamon is my go-to. Add the blueberries to the oatmeal and water and microwave for 2:30. Sometimes I add flax, other spices (ginger, cloves, turmeric, nutmeg), slivered almonds or chopped walnuts. Sometimes I switch the blueberries for frozen peaches or mixed berries, or fresh bananas (added after cooking).

Ive been rolling my own oats from whole oat groats every morning for the past 15 years.  I get the groats in a 50 pound bag about once a year for about $50.  I eat the oats every day because they're cheap, healthy, convenient, and they make me shit on a regular schedule.  Depending on what i put on them, sometimes they taste good too, usually just milk and honey.  I have this oat roller, it works like new after 15 years of daily use: http://thewholetruth.org/res_oat.asp

Then I eat it cold, mixed with homemade whole milk yogurt, fruit, nuts, cinnamon, and various other things.

I have no interest in going back to rolled oats!

All those fancy recipes sound like so. much. work. Cook, simmer, stir, mix, slice fruit, top with whipped cream, what-have-you. Try to remember to prep the night before? Not gonna happen. Have to be tied to the kitchen for 2 minutes waiting for the microwave? Nope, that's too long, or not short enough; 120 seconds is just...not long enough to accomplish anything else meaningful, and foreeeeeeeever when you're just standing there waiting for it to be done. I want it NOW, lol! Also, I'm usually up way earlier than the rest of the house, and microwave whirring and beeping is not what I want waking my school-aged kidlets before their time.

One of the reasons I love oatmeal is that it's EASY. (I mean, it's also tasty, and filling, and nutritious, but let's face it-- I'm lazy). I pour rolled oats in a bowl, put a spoonful of brown sugar, pour in some milk, and eat. It's only one step more involved than cheerios (scoop of sugar), and about 300 times more filling/nutritious.

If I don't have milk on hand, I use boiling water instead of milk, and let it sit by itself for 5-20 minutes to cook and cool to an edible temperature (meanwhile I do morning routine stuff).

Yes, fruit/nuts/chocolate/spices are all amazing and delicious add-ins. Then again, I'm not a "let's have a soothing morning ritual of putting my breakfast together" kind of person. I have stuff to accomplish, and I just haven't found any other breakfast option even remotely approaching the same level of easy/quick/cheap/good. If there was, I'd be happy to switch.

My breakfast usually consists of: 1/3 to 1/2 cup of plain Quaker oatmeal, just enough water to submerge the oats in the bowl, microwave for 2 minutes. Add some brown sugar for flavoring, raisins, a small amount of butter, and almost a tablespoon of peanut butter. Stir the peanut butter until melted into the oats and enjoy.

I'm being completely honest when I say this - but I prefer mostly dry!

I take about half a serving of plain or multi-grain cheerios, then throw about 1/3 cup of old fashioned oats on top. Add a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter to that. Microwave it (dry) for 45 seconds to 1 minute, stir it up, then throw a splash of almond milk on it (it does need some moisture).

That's my daily breakfast, eaten in the car. On the weekends I might add some vanilla, berries, nuts, etc, but the base is always the same.

Yes, I know it's strange. I generally can't stand wet cereal (went from age 4 to 24 eating cereal dry, plain).

I will occasionally actually prepare the oats, but my standard way is just too efficient.

I almost posted about the fridge oatmeal in your sub $200 grocery post because it is so easy to make.

I've heard good things about fridge oatmeal-- it's just that I'm terrible about remembering to prep stuff before I go to bed.

All those fancy recipes sound like so. much. work. Cook, simmer, stir, mix, slice fruit, top with whipped cream, what-have-you. Try to remember to prep the night before? Not gonna happen. That is the great thing about refrigerator oatmeal you can make it whenever you have time and it can sit in the fridge for 2 or 3 days and is ready to grab and go with no effort.

Stir and eat

I make ours on Sunday whenever I have time and we eat it Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday when I get home I will make a few more days worth while cooking dinner.

I don't think I'd want fridge oatmeal - it'd be pretty cold to eat, right? In the climate round here, I'd rather have something warming in the morning.

About the same as eating cereal with milk. Real refreshing in the summer. During the cold months I could see wanting something warm but I just throw it in my backpack and eat it at work by that time it is just slightly cool.

If I want an easy warm breakfast on a cold day I normally have a breakfast burrito, it warms your hands and belly.

Alright, I made some fridge oatmeal last night and grabbed it this morning to eat at work today. Milk, greek yogurt, walnuts, honey, and just a little bit of an apple cider mix packet. Fantastic on the go breakfast and super filling. Need to start trying out some different fruits in there, and I guess I'll need some maple syrup, but it's a great way to have a cold refreshing breakfast instead of a hot one.

Great recommendation. Easy, efficient, tasty.

Heh. One of many reasons I eat pretty much the same thing every day is that I don't like spending more brain space on food than I have to. So I don't have to remember to prep my oats for tomorrow. It's the thing I do after loading the dishwasher at night, automatic, always happens, it would cost more effort to stop than it costs to do.

These are all great suggestions! Peanut butter? Blueberry jelly? Coconut? I've got experimental oatmeal ideas for a couple of weeks now when I didn't even think anyone would comment. Great work, mustachians.

I'm all for tastier oatmeal, but.... using the microwave takes 2 minutes with no dirty dishes afterward (except for the bowl itself). That's hard to beat. How long does it take you to cook your oatmeal on the stove?
7 minutes

The points about uncooked oats (basically muesli) are also great. Anything you would put in oatmeal, you can pretty much also do with oats and milk or yogurt. Great for summer mornings when you really don't want warm food.

Old fashioned oats + greek yogurt + plain pumpkin + almond milk + whatever spices you want. Stir it all together and refrigerate overnight. The pumpkin adds a touch of flavor and a serving of veggies, all while tasting like dessert.

Old Fashioned usually.  Not a fan of Quick Oats and while steel cut are great, they take too long to cook (our rice cooker doesn't have a porridge/oatmeal mode).

Most often I toss in some frozen blueberries which rapidly cools it off after cooking, put in some milk and eat.
Sometimes I put in raisins.
On rare occasion I'll add cinnamon to either of the two above.
On rare occasion I eat it plain.
I've been known to put a little brown sugar or honey in my oatmeal too, but not very often.

I like simple and my preference to keep it quick and easy exceeds any desire to make some "oatmeal masterpiece".  I've also tried putting nuts in my oatmeal and I'm not a fan of that flavor combination (also tried throwing some leftover trail mix in my oatmeal, but didn't care for that either).

I toss some quick outs into a bowl along with a tablespoon or so  of ground flax and a pinch of salt.  When my morning tea water boils, I pour some of the hot water over the oats, give them a stir, and just let them sit there (no microwaving required).

By the time the tea is strong enough to drink, the oatmeal is also ready.  I usually have it with milk and brown sugar, sometimes with milk and maple syrup.

I don't eat oatmeal much, but I wanted to point out in response to a couple of earlier posts that cooking it in the microwave is actually considerably more energy efficient than stovetop.

...and very quick.
2min 45sec for the amount of oatmeal and water I use.

However, I would think an inductive cooktop would be very close in energy efficiency.

It appears that my standard is a bit more complicated than average.

I do the steel cut or whole rolled oats rather than the stuff that's already been steamed to make it cook faster. I do stove top (15 to 20 minutes), but cook enough for 5-6 meals at a time.

I have it with blueberries, majool dates, almonds, walnuts (sometimes pecans), ground flax seed, chia seeds, a banana, and usually soy milk (sometimes almond), also sometimes cocoa powder.

I <3 porridge and have a sugar addiction, so:

On workdays: with a cube of brown sugar and a couple of shakes of mixed spice - unmustachianly this is the quick oats sachets (though Aldi / Lidl own brand) as like hell can I be arsed measuring stuff at my desk.

On weekends: With a few raisins and some flaked almonds, also with mixed spice and brown sugar.

Whilst I absolutely accept the right of those who have posted above that they eat the oats raw with just milk poured over them to do so, I must say I don't see the appeal - that's just muesli without the exciting bits!

Used to cook it and add walnuts, raisins or chopped apple.  Never added any cinnamon, sweetener or milk.  My husband will cook oats in the winter for both of us as he prefers a warm breakfast.  But for myself, I'm into Muesli.  I make my own with oats, coconut, raisins, almonds and pumpkin seeds and eat with any fresh fruit is available or just with whatever milk is on hand (almond, soy, cows').  My local grocery has a "bulk" aisle section and I can buy the fixins in exactly the quantities I need, ie... 1/4 cup of unsweetened coconut or pepitas or whatever.
When blueberries are cheap, I'll do an oat-blueberry smoothie, too.

Sometimes I'll make up a big batch of oatmeal smoothies.  Then just grab one out of the fridge and go...

http://www.theyummylife.com/Oatmeal_Smoothies

Oats, chia seeds, yogurt, milk/juice, fruit...

We had one year with an amazingly huge cantaloupe crop.  Too much to eat before it would go bad (even giving a ton away), so it was cubed up and popped into the freezer.  It's great added to the smoothies.

Blueberries and chopped strawberries to top it off.

F'in delicious, I eat this almost every morning.

Love this thread! *eats another spoonful of breakfast oatmeal*

I use quick oats, 80seconds in microwave.  Add cinnamon, raisins, walnuts, salt and a bit of milk.  Cream if I have leftovers.  Eat from measuring cup it was cooked in!

I have prepped stovetop steel cut oats on a weekly basis, just micro' d the daily portions.  Also good.
I loved reading all the savoury oatmeal ideas here.

I eat oatmeal for breakfast most days knowing I will not get hungry before lunch. I credit this as part of my success in losing 10+ lbs a year ago, keeping it off, and lowering my blood sugar to normal range.

Oatmeal for the win!

I fear the microwaves at work because they're disgusting and people do weird stuff like nuke fish in them.

My solution? Hot water from an electric kettle into a bowl with oatmeal, 1/8c walnut bits for protein and plenty of cinnamon because I love it.

Delicious.

Oh, yeah: to clarify the above, the way I eat mine is porridge. Pour rolled oats in dish, pour milk on top of porridge, microwave for around 2 minutes and then a bit more. If you want it runnier/creamier, add more milk.

This is such a good idea, I can't believe I never thought of it before. Cooking oats on the stovetop makes a mess and takes too long unless it's a lazy weekend. This is a perfect way to make a quick, one-bowl hot breakfast.

My other go-to is overnight oats, when I remember to make them. My favorite kind right now is peanut butter and honey: half a cup of rolled oats, half a cup of whole milk, a spoonful of peanut butter, let sit in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add a little more milk, drizzle with honey and stir. Delicious. Chopped walnuts or flaxseed meal are good add-ins too.

I'm a creature of habit. I eat 1/2 c of rolled oats with a big scoop of peanut butter, half a banana, and a handful of raisins or craisins every morning. Put it all in a bowl, fill with water until the oats are covered by about 1/4", and microwave for two minutes. Delicious.

300g of oat groats tossed in the Instant Pot with 60g of dried raisins/blueberries/cranberries, salt, maple extract, vanilla extract, butter extract, cinnamon, stevia blend. Slow cook for four hours, stir in 1 cup of egg whites, portion in 5 containers, drizzle with sugar free maple syrup and sea salt, stick in fridge.  Later, I'll reheat and eat it with unsweetened almond milk on top.

I like groats the best because of the texture. I like eating it dry too, but I try to avoid eating cold cereals because it is one of the very few foods I have a problem with binging on.  I mean, I will binge on Grape Nuts as easy as Reece's Puffs, it something about the feel of the milk. I can't describe it.

It may sound a bit odd, but I love cooking my rolled oats on the stovetop with water and some frozen grapes thrown in and a spoonful of PB on top when it's done.  It's kind of like deconstructed PB&J and the grapes are so good when cooked.  They get more crisp and you get this big burst of flavor when you bite into one.

Also really good with pumpkin mixed in during the fall or with apples and cinnamon.  Pretty much any fruit you get your hands on goes well with it.  Savory oats is also very good.

Mine is apple cinnamon. Half a cup of rolled oats. 1 cup of apple juice. I let it sit like that for a few minutes while I make tea and defrost some strawberries. Cook in the microwave for 2 minutes. Add cinnamon, walnuts and the strawberries. I've been eating it every morning for years now. Awhile back I cleaned up my diet. Fell off that wagon a long time ago now, haha, but the morning oats I've managed to stick with!

Steel cut in Instant Pot. I spray the pot so it doesn't foam, add 1 cup oats, ~2 tbl brown sugar, some cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and 3 cups water. Cook for 11 minutes. Usually by the time I am done my shower the pot has depressurized. This is enough for about 5 days for me. I usually add some fruit as well before eating. Fresh if I have it, frozen works too. I usually try to thaw some the night before.

I'll play, mostly so I can find this later and comb through it for new ideas. When Talenti Ice Cream was on sale for $1.88 at Target, I bought 12. Now they're my oatmeal containers and I prep them all at once. Into each container goes 1/2 c. Old Fashion Oats, a generous pinch of coconut, a sprinkling of dried fruit (blueberries or cranberries or some super fruit from Costco), Cinnamon, Allspice, Nutmeg and Cloves.

The night before, I dump the mix into my perfect oatmeal bowl. I fill the Talenti container to the middle of the "t", dump it in along with a splash of homemade vanilla. I stick the whole thing in the microwave and let it sit overnight. In the morning, I microwave it for 2'45". I let it sit about a minute, then add a drizzle of Agave Syrup and whatever fresh berries I have on hand. It's a big portion, but DH has a physical job and this keeps him full. Well, the oatmeal plus some plain yogurt and a glass of Green Juice.

2/3 to 1/2 Cup oats (depending on how much time I have to eat it) Full cup if there is lots of time. I sprinkle in a fair amount of raisins, add water to a volume slightly more than the amount of oats. Soak for ten minutes then microwave for three minutes on high. Cinnimon if I'm feeling fancy.

I eat oatmeal every morning!  I started out with the typical oats, milk and peanut butter, but some mornings I want something a little more cheesy and savory...

1/2 cup old fashioned oats, 3/4 cup milk, flax seeds, 1/4 Tablespoon butter, then add sharp cheddar cheese (half a handful?) and sprinkle cayenne powder (to taste).  OMG amazing!

Now I alternate cheesy/savory and Peanut butter. YUM!

1/2 C old fashioned oats, 1C water, for 2.5 min in the microwave, flavored with, in order of preference, a banana broken into pieces, a handful of raisins, or a spoonful of brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.  Nice and lazy, and I usually throw it in the micro and get dressed while it's cooking.  In the summer, I try to switch to overnight oats when I remember to prep them ahead (1/2C old fashioned oats, 1/2C yoghurt, 1/2C liquid, usually from a jar of poached plums, peaches, etc.)

Energy bites. I hate the texture of cooked oatmeal but love it raw mixed with PB, maple syrup, ground flax and a few chocolate chips (as a little extra splurge). Mix in a bowl, roll into balls, and pop in the freezer for a bit to set. Then voila, bite-sized, hot weather appropriate deliciousness. I love them in cold weather, too. And they are a hit with my kids. You can sub out the chocolate chips for something healthier or leave that step out all together.

Exact recipe ratios:
1 cup oats
1/2 cup PB (crunchy, creamy, or even almond butter)
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup chocolate chips or dried fruit/seeds
1/4 cup ground flax

Mix together and roll into bite-sized balls. Lay on parchment paper lined plate or pan. Allow to set for at least 20 minutes in freezer.

Checking back in on this thread to report that I'm absolutely loving all the new stuff I've tried. Did a savory batch recently - butter, cheese, bacon bits (basically treated it like a baked potato), and it was great. I think with some egg in there, it would make for an amazing and hearty meal, but I haven't tried it yet.

Also got a batch in the fridge that is my favorite so far. Equal parts oats and milk, a dollop of greek yogurt, one small kid sized container of apple sauce, and then pan seared some apple slices in butter/honey and put those in too. Incredible!

Feeling like I've got a handle on both sweet and savory as well as good results from the fridge and microwave. Stovetop is still intriguing.

My overnight oats recipe:

-Bulk rolled oats
-Silk unsweetened vanilla almond milk (enough to just cover the oats)
-A few dashes of cinnamon
-A few sprinkles of either brown sugar Splenda or coconut sugar
-A half handful of walnut pieces
-About 2 tablespoons chopped dried cherries (FYI, the Trader Joe's Tart Montgomery version)

Store in fridge overnight.  In the morning heat up in microwave.  Right before eating add:
-Approximately 1/4 cup diced Fuji apple
-1 tablespoon chia seeds

Keeps me going loooonnng throughout the day.  Could eat this practically every day for life.  So glad I found out about doing overnight oats; saves me from having to cook them on the stove top in the morning and the taste/texture is practically the same so a huge win-win for me.

In the winter, steel cut oats with a little milk or cream. In the summer, granola (Mark Bittman's recipe - really, a ratio) with yogurt.

I make huge batches of these so that we have instant breakfast in the morning that takes no more than the time to heat in micro or swirl the yogurt. The add-ins are the same: dried fruits, brown sugar or honey, chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds. Yesterday, I made granola with 6 C rolled oats, 1 C sesame seeds, 1 C chopped pecans, 1 C coconut flakes, 1 C dried cherries, 1/2 C  honey - it's the first time I've used sesame seeds, and I'll dial back on them next time, they dominate the flavor.

Sometimes on a whim, Heidi Swansen's baked oatmeal https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/baked-oatmeal-365069 (https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/baked-oatmeal-365069) (also with yogurt). This is a really flexible recipe - I've ommitted the egg, ommitted the butter, subbed coconut or evaporated milk, used home-canned, frozen or dried fruit, you name it. I've shared it with coworkers who say their kids even like it.

Also, what's the best price?  I don't use oats a lot so I've just been buying store-branded rolled oats at my grocery store (Kroger) at ~$0.94/pound.  I'd love to find a better deal, as I'm thinking of putting oatmeal into heavy rotation in our household!

We use 5 gallon food grade buckets with gamma seal lids for all our bulk foods (rolled oats, flour, sugar, beans, rice).

My kids LOVE oatmeal.  I mostly buy old fashioned rolled oats, but I keep a canister of quick oats around for super fast microwaveable breakfasts.  Most of the time I cook it with a sprinkle of cinnamon and either maple syrup or brown sugar.

My favorite oatmeal recipe is Budget Bytes Baked Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal (https://www.budgetbytes.com/baked-pumpkin-pie-oatmeal/).  I make a double batch and cook it as 24 muffins, then freeze half of it.  Microwave 2 of those and you have a perfect, easy breakfast.  I've made a variant by upping the vanilla and using apple sauce instead of pumpkin puree.

5 gallon buckets here too. I'm pretty sure my in-laws gave them to us as a wedding present 7.5 years ago. If you're in the grocery store regularly, you can often ask the bakery or the deli to save you their empty buckets (frosting in the bakery, usually 3gal // pickles in the deli, usually 5gal), and collect them for free that way. 50lbs of oats will fit nicely into three buckets. I then keep a 1 gallon container handy on the counter (right next to my brown sugar) and refill as needed:

As for prices, I usually wait until oats go on sale at Sprouts for 50-70¢/lb, and then ask one of the employees if they can get me a 50lb bag from the back. Regular store prices can vary wildly-- Sprouts usually has them at ~$1.50/lb, which is way too much, imo. There is another organic/natural/hippie food store in town that carries oats for 79¢/lb regularly. That's the price I'd look for if I didn't know they went on sale at Sprouts. Generally, buying by the canister is pretty expensive, all things considered (though still cheaper and healthier than cheerios...)

I HEART OATMEAL

I do whole groats bought in bulk from Azure Standard (also available at Whole Foods Market bulk section at a higher per pound cost but still hella cheap). Overnight in the crockpot (6 hours on low) with water, salt and vanilla and sometimes flax seeds.

Add raisins, nuts, fruit, other seeds and white sugar.

Sometimes I shred a little fresh turmeric on top. Gotta stack those superfoods. :D

Happiness.

That reminds me: Gotta go prep tomorrow's batch.

Edited to add re storage: I keep mine in a galvanized metal pail with a lid, which I purchased at Home Depot. We had chickens for a while and I learned that grain is crack for rodents and rodents will gnaw through anything plastic to get their crack. I believe there are theoretical bacterial contamination risks with metal versus plastic but guess what? I don't care.

Your wife is my new hero.

Wow, you're the first person I've ever met who also rolls their own from groats!

I used this gizmo that attaches to my KitchenAid stand mixer.

Oatmeal is my favorite breakfast meal!  I prefer the steel cut oats, which take longer to cook so I usually batch cook a bunch and refrigerate portions plain.  In the mornings, all I have to do is take out a portion, microwave it, and add my favorite accoutrements: cinnamon, sugar, raw hemp hearts, chia seeds, unsweetened coconut flakes, and vanilla almond milk.  If I have fresh bananas I will add those too!

5'11'' 180, and I like 1/4 cup if I'm looking for a smaller portion and will go up to 1/2 cup if I'm pretty hungry or going do some strenuous activity. The amount of add in's and toppings is a factor as well as if you're using water vs almond milk vs skim vs whole. 1/2 cup of oats with lots of fruit and whole milk is a fairly heavy meal.

I also usually skip lunch, for what that's worth. If I'm cooking the oatmeal, I'll use less, as it expands, so more like 1-1.5 cups of oats.

Steel cut, stove top, cook 3 servings for two people. Add 1 banana or apple chopped  (cook with oats). Add 1 tsp cinnamon. Add 1/8 cup chopped walnuts. Stir.

Optionally add real maple syrup or wild blueberries from your hometown when in season and visiting mom.

Also, homemade granola when I can convince DW to spoil us (me).

I’m 5’1” and 125 lbs. I cook a 1/2 cup of oats in a cup of water on the stovetop. I always mix in some form of fat (usually a bit of shredded cheddar and butter, but today I used peanut butter) and have a fried or hard boiled egg on the side. I’m always hungry in the morning, and this solid breakfast keeps my metabolism happy and my stomach full for several hours.

I eat somewhere between 400 and 600 calories for breakfast just about every day.  Here lately it's consisted of 1/2 cup of oatmeal (with butter mixed in) and 3 scrambled eggs.

Wow! Average human stomach volume is about a liter (~4.2 cups), so that is a serious breakfast. I have been trying (successfully) to drop a last few stubborn pounds lately and will probably bump up to 0.75 - 1 cup of oatmeal for my big breakfast in the near future after I get down around 170-175. Stuff is working great for weight loss. It's delicious and filling even in pretty small quantities, so I never feel like I'm making a sacrifice. I had to get over my fear of carbs though.

Question for the folks who are adding eggs - how do you do it? Scramble the eggs on the side and mix them in? Fry it over easy or over medium and then drop it on top? Cook the oatmeal and eggs in the same pan at the same time?

Figure I'll throw this recipe on here as well.  It's more than just oats and makes for a pretty hearty breakfast.

 food52.com/recipes/17478-breakfast-quinoa-with-oats-and-chia-seeds

It's for one serving, so I just multiply it and make a big batch, put it in jars for breakfast at work during the week. It's been a while since I've made it though.  It's also good with berries (I'm not a big fan of bananas).

Breakfast Quinoa with Oats and Chia Seeds
Serves 1

1/4 cup cooked quinoa
1/4 cup uncooked rolled oats
1/2 cup milk
2/3 cup water
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 packet Truvia or 1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 medium banana, sliced
1/4 cup chopped pecans

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the cooked quinoa, rolled oats, milk, water and chia seeds. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, until oats and chia seeds have absorbed most of the moisture and the mixture is thickened. Add in the cinnamon, Truvia or brown sugar and vanilla extract. Cook for 30 seconds more. Remove from heat and stir in the banana slices. Spoon into a bowl and top with the chopped pecans.

I cook a batch of steel cut oats in my InstantPot or on the stove every week or so and refrigerate it.  Then I just put some in a bowl in the morning, add some chocolate chips, microwave for a little over a minute, then add a bit of honey and a couple spoonfuls of peanut butter.  I think I generally eat pretty close to the recommended serving size (1/4 cup uncooked) and it keeps me full for a good 5-6 hours.  I always struggled with finding a good easy, healthy, tasty breakfast until I found oatmeal!

I've been making what I call "breakfast suet balls" for the past few months. I made some in about twenty minutes this morning and now have breakfast in the freezer for the next three weeks. Not exactly oatmeal, but perhaps a reasonable variant? Since I eat them right out of the freezer, they are particularly good for warm weather.

It's also possible (though I haven't experimented) that you could take a frozen suet ball, toss it in some milk and stick it in the microwave to cook. All the ingredients should work as a warm mushy oatmealy type breakfast too, I would think!

Breakfast Suet Balls

Combine the following dry ingredients in a blender or food processor:

•   2 cups old-fashioned rolled or quick oats
•   1/3 cup organic ground flax/chia blend (or ¼ cup ground flax seed and 2 TBSP chia seeds)
•   1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
•   2 tablespoons vanilla protein powder

Blend until finely ground, then pour into a mixing bowl and add:

•   ½ cup smooth or chunky peanut butter
•   1/4 cup agave nectar or honey
•   1 teaspoon vanilla extract
•   ½ cup mini dark chocolate chips

Mix with your hands until well moistened. Roll into 1 ½” balls and place on wax paper on a cookie tray. Freeze for ten minutes, then store in the freezer in an airtight container. The suet balls will thaw enough to eat in just a couple of minutes.

Makes ~20 suet balls, each containing around 120 calories, 5 grams fat, 6 grams sugar.

Not sure if it's been posted, but I suggest looking up savory oatmeal recipes.  Basically using oats as a type of bread or rice replacement.

Microwaveable oats are very convenient and taste great with a little garlic and a fried egg on top.  Super cheap too

We love to make a savory oatmeal dish for dinner that we call "oatmeal egg bowls". It's half a cup of oatmeal with 1 cup water and a pinch of salt. This is microwaved for 3 minutes-ish. Then we add in cheddar cheese and top with a fried egg. Then everything gets a sriracha drizzle, and chopped green onions if we have them around. Very easy and delicious lunch or dinner!

I eat oatmeal almost every day for breakfast - prepared fresh on the stovetop when I have time in the morning, prepared in the evening when I need to get up early. During the week, I'll make them with water and I might add fruit, but I like the natural flavour of oatmeal as well.

During the weekends I prefer the luxury version: baked coatmeal muffins. Which is basically old fashioned oats, milk, banana, peanut butter and cinnamon. Two of those are enough for me until lunch.

My kids (5 & 6) would eat a cup of dry oats. As in, pour the oats into a bowl, add a spoonful of sugar, and munch. No milk, no water, nothing. My kids are weird, but I'm not about to discourage them from eating oatmeal. They've generally moved to wanting their oats cooked in water or adding some milk to them, but "dry oatmeal" isn't a foreign concept.

Weighing in to say thanks again for those who share your tips in this thread. I've become a regular oatmeal eater, and I'm very, very satisfied with these breakfasts. My favorites tend to the savory side, especially with an egg and some of my garden chives on top.

Becoming an oatmeal eater has changed the rhythm of my days. I lived on lattes for breakfast previously, and was ready for a full meal at 11:30. Now, I get up earlier, make and eat a breakfast along with coffee and eat it at home while listening to the news. I'm not hungry until much later in the day and eat a much smaller meal (or large snack) as opposed to my previously full lunches. In the past month I've been eating oatmeal regularly, I lost six pounds without any other conscious effort. I've also just plain been in a better mood at work since I'm taking the time to wake up properly each day before heading in.

Just tried Chai Custard Oatmeal.  Had temperature a little low on the stove so took forever to thicken.  When it says medium low I'd go about 4 on a 9 / 10 point scale...  I left out sugar because bananas on top--really noticed its absence at first.

CHAI CUSTARD OATMEAL
local paper
Prep 10 min. | Total 25 min. Serves 4

3 eggs
2 1/2 cups milk, or water
1 cup quick oats
4 chai tea bags
1/4 to 1/3 cup honey
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp salt

Sliced bananas Toasted sliced almonds Toasted coconut chips 1. Whisk eggs with milk and oats in a medium saucepan and set over medium-low. Add tea bags. Cook, stirring often, until very creamy, about 15 minutes. Discard tea bags. Stir in honey, cinnamon, ginger and salt.

2. Divide among four bowls. Top with bananas, almonds and coconut chips.

When I get out of bed in the morning my first thought is NOT "Wow, today I'm gonna cook __________. I can't wait to get started."

I like simple meals AND simple washing of dishes/utensils, etc.

I like loose oatmeal so I buy Quick Oats (chopped-up, rolled oats).

I cook them in my microwave.

I add sugar, cinnamon, and raisins.

This is my usual  breakfast.

When I was a young child, occasionally, my siblings and I would eat oatmeal for breakfast w/ milk, sugar, and cinnamon.

My father told us : "It sticks to your ribs."

I've been eating overnight oatmeal every morning for 2 years and still look forward to it every day. What i do:

1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/2 cup milk or almond milk
frozen blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries (a handful)
1/2 cup plain greek yoghurt (vanilla is good too or i mix it up with protein powder)
1/2 banana

Leave it overnight in the fridge and breakfast is ready without any work. The frozen berries melt and their juices settle into the oatmeal. So good.

1: Cinnamon + apples + maple syrup + steel cut oats
2: Instant Pot for 23-27 minutes.

Yummy, cheap, and reasonable healthy.

You can sub any fruit in for the apples (although cinnamon might not go with all options).

For old fashion oats, I usually just use a pot (and don't add apples) because it cooks up a lot quicker than in the instant pot.

Or a savory oatmeal with cooked breakfast sausage crumbled into it.

I've heard that steel cut oats is the only way to go and I'm tired of overpaying for the little-flavored packets. I love your idea @koshtra of pre-fixing it in the evening since I don't want to mess with a long cooking time in the morning.

Do you use milk or do you think I could just use water instead?  My preference is with apples or cherries - cinnamon, maple syrup or a little bit of sugar. Really, I like any fruit, any nuts, even sesame seed sounded good.
Love the idea someone had of using jams for flavors too - who knew?

I wonder if I could melt some chocolate on top or use chocolate syrup or chocolate chips?
... or scrape a chocolate bar on top like my mother used to do (or chocolate milk) and butter and a dash of salt? hm - yum.

Will try it with water first as I just picked up some oats at Aldi, steel cut old fashioned, we'll see how it does.

Just made carrot cake oatmeal. Yummy. Apples, carrots, brown sugar, raisins, cinnamon/nutmeg/ginger, toasted pecans and yogurt.

but normally its pb, triple berry, coconut shreds, pinch of brown sugar, almond milk.

Oh wow - carrot cake oatmeal - I gotta try that! Thanks @Chippewa

Oh, I just use water, @Rosy

1/2 cup steel-cut oats
1 3/4 cups water
salt
2 tbsps chopped nuts

That's the whole story. I think you could throw in just about anything sweet. I don't think I could face chocolate that early in the morning though :-)

Also, anyone make an oatmeal soup using chicken broth?

Caveat, I have not made this, but I knew it existed in Scotland, so I googled you a recipe. https://hamlynsoats.co.uk/recipes/boyndie-broth-oatmeal-soup/ (https://hamlynsoats.co.uk/recipes/boyndie-broth-oatmeal-soup/) I could also see oats replacing barley in soups if you were into that idea.

Sprouts just opened a store near me and they have steel cut oats on sale for 69c/lb this week, so I'm going to load up!

Handful of raisins

I'm not a big fan of sweet breakfast, but a spoonful of Nutella is amazing in a bowl of oatmeal.

1 cup oats
1 cup low fat cottage cheese
1 dozen eggs/egg whites
1/2 tsp baking powder

cinnamon, honey, vanilla, random adds

This goes into the blender every Sunday night and I make it into pancakes on a flat griddle. Place in tupperware and there's breakfast for the week.

I've been doing this for months now, good macros for those that care.

How many pancakes does this recipe make?

To be honest I'm never consistent enough with the size to give a good answer here. Maybe 20 or so medium pancakes?

Maybe next time you could use an ice cream scoop to get exact amount of pancakes every time.

I do oats, peanut butter, flax seed, raisins, and milk.
Quantities are eye-balled, I make the same thing for all 3 of my kids 2x a week and they love it.

Been making “egg white oatmeal” topped with fruit lately and love the extra protein and no added sugar.

Try any interesting new oatmeal combos lately?

I started doing overnight oats and really like them. Or “20 minute oats cuz I forgot the night before.”

Basically it’s a large bowl filled about halfway with whatever fresh or frozen fruit that’s on-hand (cut up). Add a couple tablespoons of nuts, add cinnamon and maybe cardamom. Add a packet of stevia or honey. Add a teaspoon of milled flax or hemp seed. Fill the rest of the bowl 1/2 inch from the top with oats. Cover with soy/almond/coconut milk. Stir it up a bit. Cover and put in the fridge overnight. Very good and a breakfast I look forward to!  Great way to get rid of fruit leftovers as well.

I saw the peanut butter variations upthread and i’ll give it a try.

Do these just get microwaved when finished and do they require syrup or butter?
