...and they cost $3.49 at most grocery stores.

Something doesn't add up.

I would never pay more than $1.99 for a pack of hotdog buns.  $0.65 is cheap, but $3.49 may be facepunch worthy.

They don’t have the whole wheat buns out yet, though...

I find the Aldi $0.65 hot dog buns to be inferior to the grocery brand (Kroger) $1.99 (sometimes $0.99 woohoo! deal) whole wheat buns. (Aldi tends to be drier, and your bun rips apart and flakes off with hot dog)

Though I just did buy 4 packs of Aldi buns over the weekend.  So not bad enough that i go out of my way to buy something else.

In my experience, Aldi buns are inferior: they are mushier and they fall apart more easily. The grocery store house brands (which are $2 regular price, but often on sale for $1) have a bit more heft and hold the hot dog better. I've never tried the brand-name $3.49 ones. No way that' worthit just to hold a hot dog!

The sesame hamburger buns we got from Aldi were unfortunately one of the products that we couldn't substitute.  Don't think we've tried the hot dog buns.

The premium hamburger buns from Aldi (I forget what they're called) are fantastic.  Unfortunately, they're also not cheap; about $2.40 for a four-pack.

Aldi is amazing! But I won't buy the cheapest thing possible just to save money. It's not like I'm exclusively eating hot dogs or anything. Some things are just worth spending more on. Like chips...even though Doritos are egregiously overpriced for what you get, they're so much better than generic brands.

I agree.  I bought their buns once and they were horrible, so I stick to Publix ones ($1.39).  I buy name-brand chips and snacks as well because if I am gonna indulge I want the really good stuff!

Just got buns at Aldi for 43 cents.  Leftover supply from Memorial Day but they’re good until June 4.

Guy at work eats a $7 hot lunch each day.
I am sitting with my Aldi roll and soup for 50c.
Repeat this for 226 working days, over 5 years.
That is whats been happening.

It’s actually quite sad what some people spend on lunch.  I make good money now at a good organization and I still pack a cheap lunch almost everyday.  Fortunately, the office culture doesn’t conflict with this and I’d say most people pack most of the time.

But I remember 15 years ago when I was working retail.  Once at a toy store in the mall and later at a Barnes & Noble.  I always packed my lunch back then, too.  But I remember most of the other retail workers (making something like $9-$12 an hour) were ALWAYS buying lunch.  It was especially sad at the toy store.  Employees had a 45 minute lunch.  They’d race across the mall, spend $8 on a shitty fast food meal at the food court and then race back to start working again.  Even back then, long before I got into personal finance hardcore, I remember thinking how stupid they were.

I'm in the some things are worth paying for camp. Bread loaded with dough conditioners and preservatives is not worth eating at any price. I gladly pay the $4 or whatever to get real, quality food.

Yeah, I like Aldi for some things, but not for their cheapest bread.  I've bought it, and each time I do, I've regretted it.  It's just bad.

Back when I actually consumed carbs, I bought the ALDI buns a few times.  Yeah, they're pretty awful.  Very light, but then kind of doughy once you start chewing them, and flaking all over.  These days, I'll just take the hog dogs... maybe with some sliced cabbage, pickles, and mayo :D

Same as the others... cheap bread is terrible.

Maybe not very mustachian but Dave's Killer Bread is where it's at.  Organic + it's the best tasting bread on the market. Still waiting for them to make DKB buns though.  In the meantime, I have 0 issues using sliced bread for a bun.

I've noticed the heels of DKB are quite thick and would make excellent hot dog buns. Also, my Grocery Outlet occasionally has DKB. When they do, it's $2.99/loaf. I buy as many as I can fit in the freezer. Otherwise, the best price is at Costco.

In Norway we have had a TV program, called Teenage boss, where a spendypants teenager may run the family's finances for a month.

It usually ends up with that they get into trouble at the end of the month and need to be super frugal. Some teenagers come up with the idea of buying the cheapest hotdog buns (of a comparable quality to the ALDI buns). They serve these buns as breakfast and lunch to their family members, because they cost almost nothing. Poor family members who need to eat that.

That sounds like a fantastic TV show. I'm actually planning to put my kiddo in charge of the budget by the time he is a teenager. Hopefully, he isn't a spendypants.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
