Honda brought back the Civic Hatchback
« on: September 28, 2016, 09:30:00 AM »
Am I the only one a little excited about Honda bringing back the civic hatchback?

I grew up with an affinity for Honda's and was disappointed when the civic hatchback was killed off, or only available in the SI model in the early 2000s. Not that I'm racing out to get one anytime soon, but I do enjoy a competitive alternative in that segment to the Mazda3. I never could get down with the previous models of the Fit (haven't driven or sat in a new one either).  I just hope enough people buy them that in a few years I can score one pre-owned.

We're pretty much exactly the same person.

Blue 6spd Mazda3i hatch here.

This is awesome & it looks pretty too!  I'm driving an '06 Scion TC hatch right now.  The new civic looks similar, a little sporty with the versatility of a hatch. I was super disappointed when Toyota announced the end to Scion earlier this year.  Now I've got a replacement... in 5-10 years.

Honestly I am not a fan of the styling, and I prefer hatchbacks that are taller in the rear. The versatility of this one seems limited to me, but seeing it in person would give a better idea.

Needs to be a three-door. Looks fugly compared to an EP, let alone an EG. Fuel economy is disappointing compared to the VX trim of the EG. Overall, I am not impressed.

Besides, a 2017 Civic Hatch shouldn't be relevant to any of us until at least 2027 anyway.

I agree with this.  A hatchback without a taller rear is pretty limiting.  Even my old shoebox of a Geo Metro could fit a lot inside it with a taller rear.

New choices are usually good. But I'd be more excited about a new Civic wagon, to be honest.

There's a lot going on in those photos.

I'm not offended, but there's probably still a style over substance philosophy there.

We own (2) used wagons. Excessive perhaps, but they are not cramping our financial goals.

We probably get more looks of pity than appreciation with them, but we rather actually enjoy driving them.

Unfortunately the Civic has grown over the years and the new Civic hatchback is more like a late 90's Accord wagon in terms of size.  I would love for Honda to make a hatchback that was similar in size to the EF, EG, and EK generations.

This is where I am.

I have an '03 Civic, and regret not getting the hatchback version.  I was intimidated/weirded out at the time that the clutch was up on the front console, sort of.  In retrospect, I wish I had gotten over that!

But the back of this hatchback seems so tiny!!!!  What could I even put back there?

I am So excited to buy a used one in several years.

The Fit was the perfect car for me...   except that in -30 weather with foot-deep snow it actually would not go up some hills and there were a few terrifying driving moments! A slightly larger Civic engine has been fine in two different Civics over years  in this weather. I cannot wait until I can get the functionality of a hatchback back on a future Civic.

Yup, looking at those pictures, my thoughts were "kinda nice I guess, but way too big a car for that styling".
Now maybe if they were to cut out the rear seats, make it shorter, a two door, two seater and as fun and cheap to drive as a CRX (and call it a CRX), then I'd be excited :)

I do lol. My first big financial mistake was fully building my EG civic with a turbo charged gsr swap.

EG = chassis code of the 1992-1995 Civic hatchback
EP = chassis code of the 2001-2005 Civic hatchback (which only came in SI trim, with a high-power engine)
VX = a 1992-1995 Civic hatchback trim level with a particularly efficient engine

The most mustachian Civic hatchback is still an EG VX, even though they're 20+ years old now.

I owned both a 2007 and 2008 Honda Fit Sport. I liked that styling. I like the third generation better than the second, but still not as much. And driving the 2nd gen, it felt flabby and soft in comparison. Not sure if I should believe Car and Driver or everyone else, but in theory the 3rd gen is even softer (C&D claims otherwise.) Of course I'd have to drive it for myself... maybe in 5 years.

All that is to say... I don't really like this styling. And in general, I've always found Civics to be too small inside for me. The Fit isn't as big/wide of a car, but I felt that more space was allocated to the driver.

But... in general I'm happy that still still make manual hatchbacks... the more the merrier!

Yuuuuup.  $20K for the base model? Probably for all those crazy compound curves of the foofy body panels and aggressive plasticky bits.  Give me an efficient wagon with REAL space and I'll spend $20K...but not on an oversize matchbox car that has no extra room over a 10 year old Fit.

Something like this on the other hand...
