High-Five, or Facepunch?
« on: April 24, 2015, 11:56:24 AM »
I don't know if I need a facepunch or a high-five.

I bought a classic car. A '65 Rambler. My dad offered me $3000 in part to buy it, I spent another $3700. It runs, but needs minor work. Everything pretty much works. My dad and I have been looking for a classic project car for 20 years, and we finally found one that wasn't 1. expensive or 2. in pieces.

My oldest daughter is almost 18, she's going to buy my Saturn, and the Rambler is going to be my daily driver when I'm not cycling.

So what sayeth the Mustachians? Good deal or not? (For those who don't know, I only have mortgage debt, and am working on paying that off in 5 years)

Nothing but a high-five and a dash of jealousy, but then again, I not very MMM compared to most.

Not my particular classic car of choice, but damn, anything with a fastback always looks pretty.

For that price, and only carrying mortgage debt? High-five from me!

Below 10k. Check. You maximize alternative forms of transport. Check. You are selling the old car so it isn't just a show piece. Check. And it brings you joy (it sounds like)? Bonus check.

No facepunches from me, so long as you don't commute 50 miles each way in it and aren't driving around babies (not as safe as a newer car).

Mustachian or not, we all need hobbies.  A classic car also keeps a pretty nice resale value.  So, even if you put a few thousand into fixes and stuff, who's to say you won't get that cash back and then some in 20 years if you needed to sell her?  As far as hobbies go, it has a better ROI than something like golf.  Errr..  Unless you make the majors.  (Which I hear is really hard.)

Yeah, it was moved to cut grass... but the bottom of the legs are starting to rust out. We will be scrapping it before it gets too unsafe. My kids love to just lay out on it /under it and read books, though. Definitely okay for that.

I think the fact that it took us 20 years to find a car that was Mustachian enough speaks for itself...

:D

But maybe I'm biased!

 i'd keep it too.

its under 10k, a classic and there will be days you will wish you had a car.

i'm doing the same. my buying anything new is gone, but something with low miles and 75-80 percent of depreciation already gone can be found and used greatly.
