Happy to Not Be Driving
« on: March 19, 2013, 08:31:33 AM »
In the spirit of conscious spending I took my gf out to an amazing out of town restaurant for her birthday (tied for best restaurant experience of my life, definitely worth it), but of course I don't have a car.

We didn't want to rent a car (not Mustachian) so we borrowed one from a friend and paid him with a bit of gas and leftover cake.

It wasn't a long drive (45 minutes each way) - but hitting the highway, dealing with the stress of finding a place, traffic, made me happy that I either metro, walk, bike to work each day. Also reinforced the need to NOT own a car.. (for myself, I realize for other people having a car is a necessary choice).. and that if I really need one for a special occasion I can barter, borrow.. or even rent if it came to that.

Since I've bike commuted for most of my career, my memories of car ownership are mostly of awesome road trips or driving to the mountains to go hiking or camping or mountain biking rather than traffic jams. I think I'm a lot more fond of cars than a lot of car owners these days. I'm glad to have ditched the bills of car ownership, but I occasionally miss my car, and usually have a fun time when I do borrow a car. But I also don't usually drive to city destinations with tight parking and traffic jams to fight.

Similar sentiments. Growing up in the burbs, driving was so much fun, and I have many fond memories. Now that I live downtown though, on the few occasions when we use one, it's a huge hassle and always reminds me how much of a fantastic situation it is to not need one.

Fortunately I have a few friends with cars that like to hike, so there's some opportunities to get out of the city and hit the outdoors on the cheap.

I like the idea of not owning a car.  Unfortunately my lifestyle right now can not support that, but we did go down to 1 car.  The true savings are not in occasionally biking instead of driving, they are in not owning the car.

i loved not having a car and, especially, living in a place where i didn't need one. LOVED IT. it's just so boring to me, all the things that need to be kept up with and everything that can go wrong and zzzzzzzzz.

i feel the same way about owning a house. it is really, really not interesting to me.

funny thing is, i've never actually bought a car or a house, just hooked up with people who already owned these things and felt responsible to pitch in ...

Also I'm not trying to proselytize saying no one should have a car, just that I'm happy not to have to have / use one on a regular basis.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
