Any one use Grooveshark.com? It's kinda like Pandora, but you pick all the songs. You can build play lists, and listen to whole albums. And it's free. Sweet!

on occasion.  some of the songs are fucked up which is annoying.  it's free though.

I don't listen to music that much, and when I do it's Pandora, but I was looking for a good app for the occasional one-off lookup of a song (when someone wants to hear one song in particular) - I had been using the Spotify app for this, but after a few minutes of testing, the Grooveshark app appears much better.

Will probably use it once a month or so, but definitely nice to have when I do want it.

Thanks!

I have a Pandora account that I created to discover new artists and music. That worked for a couple of weeks. Now it just seems to cycle through a list of the same 30 or 40 songs. It never plays anything new for me.

Maybe I'll give Grooveshark a try sometime. People were raving about Spotify a year or two ago, but I didn't sign up at the time because they required you to link it to your Facebook account or something silly like that.

There are a set of streams that I cycle through...  When I'm working on the computer, I try to avoid anything with vocals. (Vocals and ADD don't get along.) So far my favorite "getting shit done" method is a YouTube playlist that I put together myself. It's up to 150+ songs now. The obvious downside is that I have to curate it myself, so it's probably not quite a net win in the productivity department. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2A7B99AB93F1E522

Grooveshark is missing a lot of music they (presumably) couldn't get the rights for.

AFAIK, Grooveshark doesn't have the rights to any music. They rely on users uploading it, they respond to DMCA takedown notices, but then let other users upload the same songs. It's a pretty grey area, legally.

I've been using Grooveshark for years.  Sometimes the titles don't match the songs but if you want to queue up an ad hoc playlist, it's great.  Pandora for discovering new music, Grooveshark or YouTube if you want to play a specific song(s).

I like Grooveshark a lot and I've also been using it for years. I rarely use Pandora or Spotify.

For fans of Pandora, I wanted to recommend Songza--similar concept, but the 2500 or so playlists are curated by music 'experts' (critics, musicologists, DJs, etc.) rather than created by a computer. The interface on the app is also pretty fun--you can tell it what you're doing or what room of the house you are in, for instance, and it will suggest playlists.

Songza had like two or three playlists it kept playing over and over for me.  I quickly gave up.

Spotify is similar to Grooveshark. You can choose what song you want to listen to, create your own playlists and also listen to playlists others have created.

I've been using grooveshark for a while.  I didn't know about it's questionable legal rights to the music played (not that I investigated it).

I like to pop in an artist name in the search box then add "remix" to the end of the search term.  It gets me something I'm familiar with but, well, remixed.  This tends to be electronica-ish, so YMMV if you think electronic music is for wankers.

I haven't tried Spotify. Maybe I'll give it a shot and see how it compares for me.

I didn't know about the legal issues with Grooveshark and copyrights. I don't think we'd be breaking any laws by using it though, since the user does not possess the songs.

If you aren't uploading, you aren't breaking the law. Whether or not it's ethical once you know that's the case is up to you.

(If that is the case.. I don't know anything about how Grooveshark works, I just tried it for the first time two days ago because of this thread.)

Anyone using iTunes Radio or googles offering?

I'm mostly happy with pandora, I like the hands of nature of it, but would be keen on alternatives.

I use iTunes Radio - it's easiest for me because it will work here in Japan as long as I login with my Apple ID from the States. Other services require me to start up a VPN connections, so iTunes has the advantage of being simplest. Works quite well for my simple needs. Being old and having virtually no driving/radio time, I found that I essentially never heard new music anymore. Now I often play iTunes Radio during my morning walks - I hadn't had the "hey, I like this song and I haven't even heard of this artist before," feeling in quite a while.

I used Pandora only briefly before they implemented region-blocking, so can't do a good comparison. My uninformed guess would be that Pandora is slicker and a more mature product.
