« on: August 27, 2015, 09:57:01 AM »
Well it took years, but I did it. I finally convinced my company to switch from shitty expensive 401k plan to rock bottom cheap fidelity 401k plan!

Full of Spartan funds AND we will be able to trade stocks and etfs as well!!

Squeaky wheel gets the oil as they say!

Agreed.  I will be able to move from a 1.58% American Fund to a .07% Spartan fund.  To me this is a savings of $2500/yr.

One of the questions I received was that "was anyone else concerned".  I said, no one has told me but I've been telling them.

I suspect when the official meeting comes around in the next week or two, most people will be bored/not care.  But this is a huge huge win for me.  I'm really excited--if I only I weren't looking for a new job hah.

I am about to roll over my Fidelity 401k into a regular IRA at Fidelity.  What are good funds to be in there?  What is a Spartan fund?

Well done. I helped do the same for my company - we just finished transferring all the funds. I helped select the new funds - Spartan AND Vanguard funds are both available. :)

I just did the same about two months ago.

Spartan funds are Fidelity's low-cost index funds. They have a number of them to choose from, but some of them do have a $2,500 or even $10,000 beginning balance requirement.

Boeing is moving to settle a lawsuit accusing it of mishandling its 401(k) plan for thousands of workers. The case is part of a legal assault by a consumer rights attorney to stop companies from offering employees high-cost, bad retirement plans.

Under federal law, employers are required to act in their workers' best interests in retirement plans, though it's not enforced very much by regulators. But Jerry Schlichter, a consumer rights lawyer in St. Louis, has sued a series of companies to force the issue.

It's earning Schlichter the nickname "the 401(k) Lone Ranger."

"Yes, that's what I have been called and I've always represented workers and I see how important it is that workers not be ripped off by their employer in their 401(k) plan," he says.

If a company does right by its workers, it finds low-cost, well diversified, smart investment choices, many experts say. But Schlichter says some companies offer workers mutual funds with fees that are way too high. Sometimes, he says, the companies get kickbacks for that.
