One of my favorites of La Rochefoucauld: Why should we have enough memory to retain even the smallest details of what happened to us, while we do not have enough to remember how many times we have told them to the same person?

And my favorite from Anna Lamott: She said [jealousy] was once again that business of comparing my insides to other people’s outsides.

Not in DC! Lots of people take the metro and the bus. I imagine that out in the burbs the bus has a social stigma to it, but in the actual District, lots of different kinds of people take the bus.

HAHA How did this happen!? I was reading the thread about public transportation having a social stigma, and I hit "reply".  I'm so confused how my reply landed in this thread....I never even opened this thread!

I loved this one from forum member catcc (from a "What to do in early retirement?" thread).  I'm not sure if the original source was Nords or catcc, but either way I like it.

If you can't hack filling your own time, then go ahead and have a boss do it for you.

Quote from: Helen Keller
Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.

Although I like Geoff Mackley's version:
Quote from: Geoff Mackley
Life is either an incredible adventure, or it's nothing at all.
I mostly like this because he said it as he was on his expedition to stand closer to Malum's Volcano Lava Lake than anyone else, ever.

"Don't let your alligator mouth run away with your tadpole behind." (My dad...yes, I know it is weird, but it is such an interesting quotation I had to share."
My 10th grade history teacher used to say, "Y'all've got diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain".

Same guy:  If some idiot asked him the answer to a test question, he'd give it -- but it was a wrong answer, yet the idiots among us never realized that.  And they continued to ask him questions time after time during the test.  It was evident to the rest of us that he totally loved lying to kids during tests.

Tossing around the word  "Teacher" pretty loosely. I wouldnt call someone who like to trick kids a teacher, more like a tricker.

And this one about champagne

"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes, I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it if I am; Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty."

Tom Magliozzi died yesterday. He was one of NPR's Car Talk brothers.

Quoting from this artitcle: http://www.cartalk.com/blogs/staff-blog/tom-magliozzi-1937-2014

Quote
Tom was the first in his family to attend college, enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He applied that degree to research and consulting jobs until, in his late 20s, he was making his tedious 45-minute commute in traffic one morning, had a near miss with another car, and had a revelation that he was wasting his life. Upon arriving at work, he walked into his boss’ office and quit on the spot. He hated putting on a suit and working in the 9-to-5 world.
...
Quote
As Tom once described his own attitude to his listeners, “Don’t be afraid of work. Make work afraid of you. I did such a fabulous job of making work afraid of me that it has avoided me my whole life so far.”

Several years ago I was looking for inspiration and went and downloaded hundreds and hundreds of quotes. I cannot remember the site and I apologise for not being able to properly attribute most of these lines:

Its amazing what can be accomplished when no-one cares who gets the credit.

Only as high as I reach can I grow,
Only as far as I seek can I go,
Only as deep as I look can I see,
Only as much as I dream can I be,

If you're bragging about what you did last week, you've done nothing this week.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given than to explore the power that they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. Its an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. Its a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

People will forget what you said, people will forget what you've done, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Governments...
"They are like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other"...Ronald Reagan.

English Language...
"Never use a big word when a little filthy one will do."..Johnny Carson.

The Man in the Mirror- Anon
If you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that Man has to say.

For it isn't a Man's father, mother or wife
Whose judgement upon him must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in his life
Is the man staring back from the glass

He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest
For he's with you clear up to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous difficult test
If the Man in the glass is your friend.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heatache and tears
If you've cheated the Man in the glass.

Who am I?
At age 22: Failed in business
23: Ran for Legislature and was defeated
24: Again failed in business
25: Elected to Legislature
26: Fiancee died
27: Had emotional breakdown
29: Was defeated for Speaker
31: Defeated for Elector
34: Defeated for Congress
37: Elected to Congress
39: Defeated for Congress
46: Defeated for Senate
47: Defeated for Vice President
49: Defeated for Senate
51: Was elected President of the United States
(It's allegedly Abraham Lincoln)

The following are all from Muhammad Ali:
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion."

I ran on the road, long before I danced under the lights.

If they can make penicillin out of mouldy bread, they can sure make something out of you.

Superman don't need no seat belt.

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

A friend is a person who goes around saying nice things about you behind your back.

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
-Roald Dahl

Since I'm currently reading the MMM recommended book on Stoicism, let me just add this to my little joke:

Stoic = Delighted to have a glass.
