Getting out of a Cox bundled service contract?
« on: January 26, 2017, 09:39:03 PM »
With the untimely death of a spouse, the overpriced services that should have never been purchased in the first place have become twice as expensive with the lost 2nd retirement income.

So far Cox isn't budging. Any experience or suggestions?  Thus far, they haven't considered death of a spouse as worthy of an opportunity to reset the contract.

If the account is in the spouses name, I would either send or show them a copy of the death certificate and tell them to cancel it.  If not, I would either downgrade to the lowest thing available until the contract is up.  How much do you need to pay to get out and how long is it for?

Cox does not have to budge. You signed the contract. There should be a buy out or penalty for canceling. Pay it, if possible, and move on.

I"m sorry for your loss. With the cable companies you can sometimes downgrade to the lowest level of service, and return all the boxes, remotes, modems, etc. that you may be paying to "rent." You might not be able to use the service that way, but it would get your bill as low as possible. You might also try appealing to a higher level of person up the chain from customer service, or asking on their facebook page.

I just had a go-around with Verizon - I was "upgraded" but the service never worked and they tried to charge me $165 for cancelling. Ultimately they reversed the charge but it took a lot of arguing, letters to the BBB, etc. They really have no reason to let people out of contracts other than providing good "customer service" - which they don't seem particularly motivated to do.

I would write to the CEO of Cox, copying the Better Business Bureau, the local newspaper or TV station, and your congressperson. That should get results.
